    Hello Philip, I'm a 65 year old woman who lives in Yucaipa, Calif. U.S.A.
    I'm going to be moving to Tennessee, U.S.A. in April 2024. Which will be a new adventure for me, I have a daughter and son-in-law and three grandchildren, who live in Tennessee. So it will be good to be around my family once again. I love watching videos locations in Sweden. I love the countryside all of the red buildings, and watching the restoration process along the way. I came across your channel today, January 2024. And by watching the opening of your video you are a vibrant upbeat and exciting person. To take on this adventure of restoring your home. So I thought oh my gosh this would be a good series to watch. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos Thank you for sharing.

    Congrats on the house guys, what an adventure. I have 40 years experience in building and developing and I would advise you to rip out the inside starting with the upstairs otherwise you will forever be working around and covering up issues. Do it right and do it once - that way you can configure the rooms the way you want and it won’t be compromise after compromise. You’ll end up ripping most of it out anyway just to insulate. Doing it the right way will be good content and a great learning experience plus you’ll have the satisfaction and peace of mind knowing it’ll be 100% . Wish you both all the very best with your new home and exciting project.

    Philip, I just turned 53 a week ago. I realised the same thing about city life here in Melbourne, Australia about 15 years ago. I did the escape to the country thing as a gradual move, owning small acreage then buying a 100 acre farm until I left the city completely. I ended up of all things becoming an Organic Dairy Farmer for 10 years and learnt all the practical things you need to know about farming and house renovation. Post COVID we sold up everything and have managed to retire very early and enjoy what life has to offer. I remember people in my Corporate office saying how lucky I was to be able to "live the dream" and leave the city work rat race. The last 10 years were hard work 365 days a year, but I'm still confident in my answer to those office workers.... it was "the only person stopping you from doing the same as me, is YOU."
    So glad that a relatively young like yourself has woken up to "smell the roses" as it were. I just subscribed today and look forward to seeing your journey. Hopefully I can provide some useful advice along the way...

    • @theNamesPhillip

      That is an incredible story of hard work and looking in words to feel what you really want in life. Huge respect for that, that’s exactly how I’ve decided I want to live. I’m glad that you’re able to live happy and you were able to realise quickly enough, because a lot of people aren’t so lucky and there are just too many distractions to make the realisation.
      Thank you so much for your support and I’m sure there will be ! Thanks

      @@theNamesPhillip I’m far better at the reading and writing stage at the moment ~ my pronunciation is still a bit off at times but practice makes perfect as they say. I drift into a German accent as I learnt that as a child and work for a German company 😂

      Fortunately, there are a lot of Germans here that speak Swedish so you won’t be alone 😅 but no that’s great, I started off being much better at reading and writing Swedish, during the early stages of my time here. The listening and speaking is way easier to develop with exposure. So I bet you’ll have no trouble picking it up when you talk to more Swedish people. Also, they are very good at English for the most part so it always helps to be able to say the odd word in English, if you can’t remember the Swedish translation

    Hi. Very interesting experience you live there. I found a house for 6600 euros in the central area of Sweden, the forested area. @@theNamesPhillip Thank you! I have the experience of a renovated house in Normandy. I bought a house for 20k euros and renovated it myself, plumbing, electrical installation, everything. I'm a lawyer by profession, but I learned to renovate at the RUclips and TikTok "university" :))) The big problem with houses in Sweden is that the wood is degraded, then it's cheaper to buy a new house kit from Romania, just that local Swedish design must be respected.

      @@theNamesPhillip I will come back with questions to you. I am trying to make some connections with some manufacturers of wooden houses and maybe we can collaborate on the intermediation of these houses. I deal with the supplier, and you deal with the beneficiary / buyer from Sweden. Then we split the commission. It's remote work, and we travel when the house is delivered, at the reception. After all, then we also collect the commission. :) Good luck!

    This is my second video... just also stumbled across because I was watching videos of off grid cabins/ homes in Canada and Alaska. What is your job? I didn't quite understand what you said. I don't mean to be negative, but from what I've seen, the Scandanavian countries and others in Europe have many of the same issues found in the U.S. with crime, drug problems and now with major immigration issues. Do you just ignore political issues, which is OK and go on with your version of a life well lived? Last question, what is the attitude of Swedes to new comers? We live on 6 acres of heavily forested land, but don't live nearly as close to nature as we would like. Thanks very much for your great presentation.... truly authentic.

    • @theNamesPhillip
      @theNamesPhillip  10 месяцев назад +4

      My job is as a UX designer so to keep it simple, I design digital products based on peoples needs and data that I have to make sense of. 🙂
      I don’t ignore these issues necessarily. I’m struggling to put it into words right now, but there are clearly issues in a lot of different areas and Sweden as well. As I said, when I was in a city, there was too much noise and I don’t really think that any positive change can come from a city (at least from me). I personally think that positive change begins at a community level. Start small and show people that there is a way to live that makes you happier and function better as a society. Being the change, you want to see in the world is all you can do.
      Swedish people are quite okay with new people from what I’ve experienced. Although it’s quite hard to say because Swedish people generally aren’t confrontational people. I’m a bit more outspoken I guess and I would say that as someone who has made an effort to integrate into the Swedish culture and becoming part of something that I consider it to be beautiful and valuable, I would find it rude if people moved here without the intention of doing so also because that’s how we become disconnected as a society, and disconnect leads to apathy.
      I hope that helped, I’ve just woken up 😂

    This is a topic we’re interested in, as we live just outside Liverpool.
    As much as we love the UK, Sweden seems to fit our ideal lifestyle much more (even though we’ve never visited).
    Question is, how do you choose which area of Sweden to move to? Especially as it’s such a vast land!
    We’re planning to visit a few times to get an idea as to what we want from Sweden but the forests, the colder climate, the more relaxed lifestyle and the wild landscapes are what we’re looking for.
    Pineapple on pizza… YES!

    • @theNamesPhillip
      @theNamesPhillip  10 месяцев назад +1

      That’s awesome, love to hear it! So I’ve lived in Sweden for four years, Merja has lived in Sweden, basically her whole life, we both lived in the north and in the southern areas. For that reason we had a good idea about the areas we would be okay living in.
      I would definitely say that visiting is a great idea and try and see as many places as possible. Sweden is 70-80% forest, so I don’t think you’ll have any trouble finding that, and as for the cold, you will likely be getting cold or climates anywhere in Sweden than you would in Liverpool. the more northern areas are very difficult to live and it will definitely be a shock to the system. Where I live is just a bit above the big lake. I like that latitude because it has (as you can tell from my latest video) very cold winters and we just had 17 cm of snow last night. But as well as that you also get the four seasons Really warm, summers and decent inbetweens. I never got to see four seasons until I moved to Sweden so it’s quite the treat.
      And yes, pineapple and pizza is great! Hopefully I don’t turn you off Sweden but they have a pizza that has peanuts, curry and banana on it 😂

I have seen tons of people renovating beautiful old houses an just ripping out all the walls (even thoose how are in good condition.') and I just don´t understand it? Why not buy a modern house with open concept, I get that it might be cheaper to do it by destroying an old house BUT is it really that bad to not have an open concept living space? Big hello from Stef in Devon UK, i’m interested in your project and currently sorting European passport to allow me to purchase a bolt hold somewhere different, have been looking at the alpes but now considering Sweden as well, would be interested in how to review property in Sweden websites, lifestyle in the country, what every day jobs in life are done differently in Sweden ?😀

      Hey stefan, thanks so much for the feedback and suggestions, they are really good and I can definitely help with that! Oh awesome, you’re from from the south-west. I’m actually originally from just outside of Bristol in a little town called Thornbury 😁
      Both places are going to be amazing, of course, I personally love Sweden for the lifestyle and the way of thinking. If I can help in anyway, I will 👍
      I have to admit, I actually love pineapple and pizza, but something you might not know about Sweden is that they have a pizza that contains banana, curry and peanuts. So I think we can work together to hate the bigger enemy 😂

      Yes their channel seems great, thank you! And yes I’m definitely going to have to learn to slow it down but that’s probably the best piece of advice I could have, I’m here for the long run, so there’s no need to get things done too quickly!

      I am working on a video now where I talk about that and show around the house to show what you can get for the price. It should be uploaded shortly so stick around!

      I am from Bristol, England originally. I moved to Mayo at 14, then to Portlaoise when I was 17, Letterkenny when I was 19, and then spent from 2017 -2020 in Cork (my favourite area of Ireland). Couldn’t quite pick up the accent but I like Beamish so that’s something 😅
