The help-line has been around for over 40 years, and to this day it receives more than 30,000 calls a year. Need to know the color of an arctic fox's eyes? Paved roads are more comfortable than cracked streets, clean parks and neighborhoods make life pleasant to look at, politicians who (hopefully) do their job is a lot nicer than you personally reading 1000 page documents to discuss tariffs through ports of which you've never heard.

i waited 4 minutes for a reply to ask how many moons there are in the solar system. the man gave me the very detailed answer of 193 moons and he even named some smaller planets like the lesser known planets that are similar to pluto but i forgot the names because it was complicated. i live in spain so i spent a lot of money on that call but i was worth it 😂

Protip: if NYC is long distance for you, try your local library.
This is a very normal service offered by most libraries, it's just that most libraries don't have a dedicated department for it, so the librarian who helps you with reference questions at your local public or academic library probably has many other duties as well.

I also think people prefer calling them over Googling an answer because there's a refreshingness having help from humans. Plus, sometimes the computer just doesn't exactly have/understand what you're looking for, and you can explain it better to humans.
Elizabeth Armbruster So there *IS* at least one library that still offers this service! That’s comforting to know. This is the way ALL libraries were back in the day before the internet, and it’s MUCH preferable.

this reminds me of the movie Desk Set, which coincidentally came out in 1957. The movie focused on Katharine Hepburn and a group of women that worked answering questions on the phone just like this people, but one day Spencer Tracy comes in to reemplace them with a machine... And he kinda does. Surprisingly, I guess the movie wasn't right, in the end, we still have people in this profession.

No, that lifeline doesn't exist anymore (at least on the American version).
It’s interesting to think of each human being as the owner of an ancient library of information because they’re full of their own history!! Every person is a whole different story, a whole different life. Some books are stacked on lower shelves, and not remembered well. But they’re still there, and without that book, the shelf wouldn’t be complete. We as humans hold so much knowledge that other life forms can’t comprehend, so much that some of it is ancient to us. When we try and remember something, we rack our brains until we have that “aha” moment where we find the right book. Our brains are full of different storage units and complex systems to keep them in order. Just like alphabetized books in an old, old library. :) We have so many different experiences that teach us important lessons. The human mind is truly a beautiful library that just needs to be dusted off every now and then.

I work as an online consultant for research at a university library. I kind of feel like a human Google sometimes because people think you have the answer to everything. One time I got a call from a person on the road and they asked how to get to a particular place. I had to look up Google maps and guide them to it because their phone didn't have gps. Good times 😂 I love being a librarian because information is rampant, the correct information is not. Stay informed folks!
