    Hi! I’ve been sewing for 50 years and have made many pillows with different types of zipper applications. Even so, your tutorial was extraordinarily helpful, particularly with the easy to follow invisible zipper application process. I had also never heard of tapering the corners to prevent the empty corners. I also appreciate the absence of music and cutesy stuff. I just want to learn something and get back to sewing! This was perfect!

      Awe!!! thank you so much JoAnn! I appreciate your comments as I feel the same when I want to learn something from RUclips. I learned about the tapered corners from my mom who was an expert seamstress, and was named Joann. ;). Thanks again!

      @@MimzyandCompany Every time I went to the basement to sew, my mom would yell downstairs, “change the needle!” I just thought you changed the needle to any other needle each time you started to sew. These days knowing how to sew is an exclusive skill! I'm sewing lot. I just finished dressing my 8 windows at my cottage and it saved me lots of money, I made about 60 pillows at this point. Half of them outdoor and these are expensive. I make them form Sombrella fabric and old cushions people don't want anymore. I have been sewing for 45 years just for fun and even learned how to repair and service my machines because nobody does it anymore. I have so much respect for people who mastered and perfected sewing to next level. Even in NY in expensive stores when they see you checking quality and you explain that you are looking at perfection and you yourself are sewing , you sometimes get more respect than some loud, rich people buying quality because they have money. They recognise craftsmanship very quickly. I sometimes wonder who will be sewing for Dior, Chanel ...in nearest future? Respect to you and thank you.

      Wow! Thank you so much for the comment! I LOVE that you used old cushion fabric for your pillows!!! That’s something I would do! Whenever I tell people I sew they always respond…that’s a dying art. I hope not! I hope to inspire some to keep it going and realize it’s not that complicated and doesn’t need to be perfect. Anyway, thanks for commenting!

      @@MimzyandCompany Not at all. Artist is an artist and you are one. Unfortunately I have never mastered fine finishing and can only do average job. Never called myself perfect, but I have more talent for designing and love for luxury fabrics. Once I drove to NY for 10 h to get my fabrics in fashion district. Oh, what a fun it was! All this silk, real cotton, 3 ply cashmere, 100% wool and linen and other accessories!. Delight! And you caln bargain. In my big city in Canada there are only 3 fabric stores and quality is long gone, even in Europe I checked 7 countries for fabrics and found none. I guess only NY is still decent place.

    • @MimzyandCompany
      @MimzyandCompany  4 года назад

      Saneth Brown if I was making the pillow for someone else I would serge the edges. For myself I almost never serge unless I feel like I’m gonna use the pillow cover a lot. I change my pillows often so I don’t wash them often, if at all. But if your using an expensive fabric or fabric that you absolutely love therefore you’ll keep for a long time then serge. I have had some pillow covers fray inside to the point I had to restitch the seam , serging would have eliminated that. All that to say ...if you have a serger and it’s convenient I would serge cuz it doesn’t take but a few minutes longer. But it’s not totally necessary. Thanks for asking! I hope y’all are well!

    Thank you so much for this video! It was SO incredibly helpful! I wanted to ask, do you use your rotary cutter much? (Or find it helpful with pillows?) I was thinking about getting one, but didn't know how it worked with upholstery weight fabrics...

      Thank you Victoria! Yes, I use my rotary cutter ALL THE TIME. You can cut through multiple layers . HOWEVER, for pillows I'd say i use scissors more because of the slight curve of the corners.

      You can certainly match your zippers if you buy them individually at the fabric store. I buy zipper by the yard so I almost always buy tan. Sometimes black or white.

      It’s difficult to put an invisible zipper in very heavy/thick fabric. It can be done, but the result are often less than perfect and zipper can difficult to open and close. Youd be better off using a regular zipper.

    I have watched a lot of people suggesting the use of an invisible zipper foot. But then you have to shift to a regular zipper foot when you get close to the end. Also, I can't get the zipper to channel into the grooves on the invisible zipper foot without first ironing the zipper open. I'm switching back!
    You made your zipper stops by sewing - by hand or machine? I've been using the bulk 24" invisible zippers, then cutting them down and making a cloth zipper end...glad to see I can cut this step out.
    If you can, please post the name of the company that sells the pillow template.
    Can you tell? I'm trying to increase my speed and accuracy!

    • @MimzyandCompany
      @MimzyandCompany  5 лет назад +1

      I bought the pillow template from Rowleycompany.com...the best purchase ever! Yes...I zigzag my zipper stop on both ends of my zipper...I just lower the feed dog and widen my stitch as far as possible so the needle will drop on either side of the zipper. I find it a lot faster than installing the metal zipper stops. I've been doing this for years and it lasts, so I see no reason to change. you can get the zipper by the yard at Rowley also...WAY cheaper than buying zippers at fabric store.

      I start to taper in 4" from the corners of a 20" pillow. Taper in about 1". If you're making a larger pillow then start to taper a little more than 4" from the corner.

      That fabric was a left over and I can't remember where it came from. I would use any medium weight decorator fabric. I love linen and linen blends because they have some texture. If you shop at Joann fabrics go to the back of the store where all the fabric is on rolls and pick what you love. But you will also find some nice linens in the dress goods as well.
