I have lived most of my life near Slad. During the seven years I didn't live here Laurie's writing and recordings reminded me of my roots and culture.

Laurie Lee is one of my favorite writers. He has yet to be discovered here in the US, but he will be one day.

I have always loved music throughout my long life, because it was the only art form that could move me, make my scalp
tingle, bring tears to my eyes. I have read many books also, and really enjoyed them, but have never been effected
by them as by great music.___________Then i discovered Laurie Lee!!!

"Every word a jewel". Together with Dylan Thomas the greatest of British wordsmiths.

The man was just wonderful - in the deepest sense of the word. He may have had his weaknesses but his lyrical prose was certainly striking. So evocative and colourful and so everlasting so as to conjure up a past almost forgotten yet unforgettable through his written words. Amazing. Respect.

I became obsessed with this book after featuring as BBC Radio 4's Book of the Week. It just seemed to cast a spell. Young and daft, head in the clouds, he reminded me of someone. I have read andcre-read the pages where he stumbles out the cornfields and ends up playing the fiddle for a Spanish family. Robin Witting

Does anyone know if the 1960 BBC documentary that Laurie Lee made is available online? I can't seem to track it down. Thanks.

Partly I'm deeply interested in Laurie Lee, but the documentary (that on the other hand achieves its goal of making Lee's work better known) starts from a severe mistake, the image of a "dry, dusty Spain" : in North Spain, (at least in Galicia and Asturias and Vigo is Galicia) landscape is more or less like in Britain and music is not exactly the Spanish guitar but bagpipes, exactly as in Scotland. Knowing a country is the first requirement to speak of its landscape or the music to be chosen as a soundtrack...

minute 30:30. It is not true at all. the new Republic was never accepted for the left wing extremist. They wanted to establish a new regime as the one in Rusia's 1917 Revolution. They never accepted democracy and tried to impose the tirany with crimes and a bloody situation all over the country. That reason and the goberment not being able to restore the order was the origin of the raise of the militaries. the rest is history. BBC should be care to documentate about the truth whatever it is. Sorry about my english. Oscar (Spain)

Sounds like you neither know or care to know the history of your own country.

To have gone from Laurie Lee to the hack painter Lucian Freud, if one could actually can call him a painter... The world through Lucian's eyes was a nightmare. All his women looked like men. His work reminds me of the most debauched of peep shows. I want to wash my eyes and dip my brain in fresh water.
