This show delivers a double dose of history. First being the archeological one, the second being that these earlier episodes are from several decades ago :P
One of the things I find interesting is that in the early episodes, this time period is referred to as the Dark Ages. In later episodes, as historians and archeologists discovered just how rich the period was, they are far more likely to use the term Medieval.
John is seen here for the first time in the series! It is amazing to see how geophys improves as the years go by! These folks are like old friends. I never get tired of seeing them.
Not really 🙁.. sorry.. John was in the first episode and it was iconic for geophys! So do go and whatch it if you haven't yet. And all the best, Friend to Friend 😉
Of interest is the episode in which they get to go back to Athelney and actually get to dig the site. If I recall correctly, John shows the Team a comparison of their original dot-matrix geophys with the new one done with upgraded equipment.
I cannot believe how young they all are - it is quite moving - and Victor and Mick gone forever. All that knowledge in Mick's head. To lose that is a tragedy.
I'm just discovering this show, and I love it 👍👍 This show is everything I wanted the history channel to be. Why are we so fixated on stupid "reality" type shows? This is perfect!
I mean the history channel and national geographic both used to be REALLY good back in the day but then Disney acquired both of them.... so ,Anne that answers your question
There’s a reason why “they’d” never, ever, make a show exactly like this in America. Even though there’s pre-historic and onward archeological sites on roughly 40 times the area in jUst the USA, not counting Canada or Mexico. A very sad reason indeed.
Phil is so genuine and such a character. He never changes over the years in the series. I imagine his private self is much like his TV persona. He has fun, he's a great educator and explainer, and he's so passionate about his work. I especially like when he talks about flint knapping and how it ties or connects him to the people doing flint knapping thousands of years ago. There is a recent interview type vid (COVID pandemic timeframe) where he talks about this in detail. Check it out.
searching for subjective reality, depicting the possibility (!) of what could have been. us archaeologists don't look for truth, this is an unreachable target. we analyse artifacts, biofacts and geofacts, in order to make a hypothesis about the possibility of things, not truth though.
We lived in England for about 5 years and watched all kinds of shows in the history of the country and visited many sites over the years. This show was and is a great way to fill in the blanks for me. All of the members over the years and show format was simple, to the point and fun to watch.
Then check out their new channel Time Team Official, they are just about to make more episodes. Not all the old crew will be back but a few of them and som new technology and stuff. Gonna be interesting to see what is going to happen
i think the reason we love this show here in the states is that our country seems hell-bent on destroying our own history while the British have held on to theirs, good, bad or indifferent. history just is... and we should embrace it instead of destroying it. it isn't always good or pretty but it is reality and we should try to learn from it.
I have been watching odds and ends of shows since a year ago. Tony gets really old then young, but no matter how old phil gets he gets better. I've just now started from the beginning.
Not long after this the shows producers asked Mick to wear a more colourful jumper. I believe he went to a charity shop for the most outrageous rainbow jumper he could find. A Star was Born.

At the end, with the way the water was about to pour over the gunnels of the canoe, I'm thinking that either people back then were smaller and lighter than Phil is, or just one person at a time rode in them.
I love Time Team! One thing though; as an Irish Native, Ogham is pronounced 'ome', like Home. 'gh' tends to be almost silent when in the middle of words.
I looked at the satellite view of this area using Google Earth and could find every place they visited during their investigation. Beautiful countryside!
I stayed at Tan Troed camp site at Lake Llangorse in 1969 for a week's school excursion. There were decent lake activities including learning how to canoe and sail Wayfarer yachts. Pony trekking was another option. All great fun but hadn't realised the historical significance of the little island. Good memories!
Ohh I hoped they would have seen the significance of iron on the island. It could indicate ore naturally deposited in water as lumps, much easier to make good iron from then rock ore . And since iron was of such importance having a fortified area with smelting in the water where it was makes some sense as to why it was built.
