      One of the things I find interesting is that in the early episodes, this time period is referred to as the Dark Ages. In later episodes, as historians and archeologists discovered just how rich the period was, they are far more likely to use the term Medieval.

He has fun, he's a great educator and explainer, and he's so passionate about his work. It's interesting to see the different technique used for creating a dugout canoe. I'm in NC and just like the gentleman said, the dugout canoes here are created by burning out the inside of the log. Tar and pitch were (& still are), used to make the craft waterproof.

    What is amusing to me is at 21:20 you have four people standing around in wet suites but 3 out of the 4 people are completely clean and dry while the only person who is wet and dirty is the one person in the back who was messing with the clip board

    I have to say it, just like everyone else has already...
    but damn, do they look so young! especially Phil and mick
    I feel like I've been deprived as a child growing up...how has this show not aired in the USA? 14, 15,16+ seasons or whatever it is...and no one thought about bringing it over for USA tv? could have spun off an American version like antiques roadshow and still aired the original episodes too...
    it would have been a hit on discovery or history back in the day...or if it was on the science or nat geo

    Tall, straight oaks? As an American of Southern decent, when I think of oaks, I think of majestic, nearly horizontal live oaks, some draping Spanish moss. Google "southern live oak tree" to see my confusion. Hard to believe they're the same genus as the tall English oaks!

    • @Missangie827

      maybe its white oaks-in S Ga we have post oaks,red,white and the ever popular live oak plus more that escape me-white oaks are pretty tall

      I've wondered this. I'm British living in Canada and I can see why they're called oak because of the acorns and similarity in leaf shape, but they aren't the same, just similar

    • @MossyMozart
      @MossyMozart Год назад +1

      @Gloria - There are a number of oak types. The brown oaks in the UK are European oaks that have been infected by a fungus that stains the wood a deep, rich brown.

    Just strolling casually over a field of wheat, finding flint blades from 3700 years ago AT THE LATEST (thank you Phil for stating the obvious by saing the flint blade wouldn't be past Neolithic. If flint tools were still used afterwards, it would STILL BE NEOLITHIC, as the end of it is marked specifically by the switch from stone to metal tools). Oh, look at those planks sticking out of the lake, they're over 1000 years old and are preserved better than wood that laid in water for less than a week anywhere else in the world.
    Those people and that country is just impossible.

    • @jackiebuttnor8410
      @jackiebuttnor8410 2 года назад +2

      Phil said it was Mesolithic as opposed to Neolithic (two different time periods). Also the use of iron tools does not preclude the use of stone tools especially soon (ish) after iron tools came into use.
      As for the wood, water preserved wood is all over the world. Check out wooden ships found in salt and fresh waters for hundreds and thousands of years.
