Mr. Sandman give me a dream~! He'll be happy to oblige, but it's not gonna be a dash of sleeping sand...
He's back and badder than ever! Ho' man... you remember that speedy attack he had before? Well, now ALL his attacks are that fast! GEEZE. He does clue you in with a wink showing you the direction of his attack, but let me tell you that you have NO time to process it for a reaction! You pretty much have to be "in the zone" and just DO it. Or guess. I did a bit of both.
As well as being psychotically fast, you can't really take him down reliably with a dodge and punish combo. You've got to be just as fast and psychotic! Jump in there just when he's throwing a punch and interrupt it, even beforehand to bait him into blocking and then dodging the following throw! You can NOT afford to play defensively, he'll wear you down way too fast! You've got to beat him at his own game. Good luck!
This is pretty much the final boss of Punch Out!!, but there's still more to come! A marathon mode of sorts has unlocked, and it completes Little Max's story! Has a surprise or two, too~

Go for the knockout punch! It's Punch-Out!!(!) This title is a true-to-form reimagining of the classic Punch-Out!! titles! And 60 frames per second will let you see the animation to the fullest! You've got the simple and rhythmic dodge/punch controls, your star punch, and a super-stereotypical array of contenders to bash! You can just feel the love that went into making this into a game to be cherished by the fans of the series! (It's good for newbies, too! This was my first!)
Your goal is to knock out your opponent, and to do so you need to look for openings! If you just throw punches at random they'll be blocked. In general, you'll dodge a single or series of punches and then when they're open for retribution you respond with your own! There are other methods of attack, and the game will introduce a few to you as a key method for attack, but in general it's "Dodge-punch-punch-punch"! You'll often get stars for a star punch (a more powerful attack) if you take advantage of these more secret techniques.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention! You have two ways of healing yourself! If you knock the other fella down, you can mash the punch buttons to regenerate health as long as they are on the floor. There's also the super-secret-chocolate bar! Press "-" between rounds to heal a LOT of health next round. Only can do once per match!
I played through this game once in the past using the Wii Remote/Nunchuk scheme throwing punches left and right, so this time I'll try the more classic method of the Wii Remote held sideways, buttons only.

A couple technical notes:
This is being played on a Nintendo Wii U, a system backwards-compatible with Wii discs. The Wii U has the same hardware built-in as the Wii. The Wii U will automatically upscale your Wii games based on your selected resolution and output via HDMI in Progressive Scan for a clean image.

I like how Mr. Sandman's "Special Ability" is just being a REALLY competent boxer.
He's got anger issues but I feel like he became the champ through his sheer willpower and passion for the sport. He doesn't need to cheat like Aran Ryan, he doesn't need to cover his body like King Hippo, he doesn't need to drink soda to speed up his movements like Soda Popinski, he just beefs himself up and has hands that are rated E for everyone who stands in his way.

@@BanjoKannoli it turns out, he has only one violation, while almost everyone else has at least two. the only other person as clean as Sandman is Honda, both having clothing violations. Sandman is wearing pants that are too big and can make trouble in differentiating between the upper and lower body, but the waistband definitely gives a hint where you shouldn't be hitting. Unlike everybody else you've fought, Sandman is just a really, *really* good boxer.

@@generaldustbin Yeah, he is pretty young, most world champions are usually between the ages of 20-30 because you get weaker as you get older, making it harder to hold the title, more powerful and young contenders keep coming and trying to take the belt. Plus, 30 years is usually the longest a boxer can hold before retiring. Most boxers usually start their careers between the ages of 18 to 22, so after 30 years they would be around 50, which would be very difficult to keep on with boxing, even for someone like Tyson, I assume Mr. Sandman has been the champion for a pretty short time, since he's young and just beat Super Macho Man, who was probably the champion for years.

The first fight:
Just like in Rocky 3, before Rocky lost his title...
I've always considered Mr. Sandman and Little Mac arch-rivals, and no fight better shows that than this one...
Think about it:
All the way back in the Punch-Out arcade game, Mr. Sandman was the world champion. He defeated all others and was the King of the mountain. And then Little Mac beat him. He lost his title and with it his ability. He was only ranked #1 in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, and even lower in Super Punch Out.
And then this game happened. Sandman came back with a vengence. He became the World Champion for the first time in years. Not only did he beat the other boxers, he destroyed them. But alas, history repeated itself. He lost his title to Mac once again.
By now, he was severly pissed off. He trained harder than ever, even destroying a building with his bare hands. All leading up to this, one last shot to finally prove his supeiriority to Mac. His attacks, his taunts, even the music capsises on his unmeasureable rage.
He’s just pissed that not one, but three short boxers took his title.
How long did it take you to write that XD

Everytime Sandman's "I'm gonna eat you, for a bedtime snack." quote is said, I just stop it at "I'm gonna eat you," so Mr. Sandman sounds like he lost every bit of sanity after making my skull look like mashed potatoes.

Real quick thing that I found out on complete accident while practicing in "exhibition mode" before I watched this: If you get a star when he says "BOO!" and use a star punch right as he is starting his volley of uppercuts you get an instant knockdown.
The timing though, as I mentioned, is crazy difficult to do deliberately, I just got stupid lucky when I threw a one-star punch and found it out.
DREAMLAND express
I always come back to this video just to admire the amount of work the animators did to make Mr. Sandman's hits feel powerful. Like the left hook that connects to Mac at around 4:30: that hook is the literal incarnation of the word "POW."
You have to admire the sound effects too. From the whip-like sound effects when Sandman hits you, to that ever so satisfying sound effect when you beat him and his head hits the floor. Also the mobile sound when you knock him down cracks me up.
Man. This is so difficult. I don't even remember fighting him or getting this far. Imma have go boot the wii up again. I remember the fights gettimg brutally tough that they made all the previous punch outs feel like easy mode

Whenever his telegraph is interrupted, Sandman throws a counter hook and THEN goes for the Dreamland Express, regardless of whether you successfully avoided the hook or not.

It's worth noting that if you dodge all of his uppercuts in his final phase then he will get exhausted and enter a state of permanent stun, the timer will slow down incredibly as well, and while you don't need them consecutive hits on him will give you free stars.
You just get a free opening to beat on him as hard as you like.

Finally! My Counter Everything for Stars works again in this fight. It was so easy when you have stars to get. He’s not so tough when you know how to get the stars, and if you can do a a way to use them.

my strategy on the final wink bit is to just get knocked out to save time
