  • Paul S. served 15 -and-a-half years in prison for aggravated child molestation. His challenges include the prohibitions placed on sex offenders, and the stigma that "once a sex offender, always a sex offender." Determined to move forward with his life, Paul has found religion and true love.

    About FIRSTHAND: Life After Prison
    ----------
    They walk through prison gates with little more than a bus ticket and less than $100. After spending months or years counting down their sentences, they have days or hours to find food, housing, healthcare, and a job. WTTW’s FIRSTHAND: LIFE AFTER PRISON offers an intimate look at the challenges and opportunities facing people returning to society after spending time in prison, as they seek to restart their lives while carrying the stigma of a criminal record.
    FIRSTHAND: Life After Prison is part of the award-winning FIRSTHAND multiplatform, multi-year initiative focusing on the firsthand perspectives of people facing critical issues in Chicago.

    ...but, what about the victim, after the offender has served his sentence - I am a victim 50 years ago and there's still trauma.I wonder how traumatized my offender is today.

      Just think about all of the wrong you have done in your life and imagine if you walked around every day and everyone reminded you of that and talked bad about you because of your mistakes. Walking another person shoes. Like I have walked in your shoes because the same happened to me, but I would completely, let that person win by giving what happened any energy for the rest of my life. That person will deal with God for what he did to me.

      But he was also a victim.

      @@Legacybyt there wasn't always a registry but it came about for a reason. The recidivism rate for child molesters is in the upper 90 percentile. It would not be a stretch to say the child molesters almost always re-offend. Given that statistic, absolutely the public surrounding these predators should be made aware of their presence for the rest of their life.

      @@8ofwands300so what? Does that mean if I am a victim of sexual assault I can get a moral pass to claim another victim?
      If someone steals from you can you then steal from someone else?
      Being a victim is irrelevant.

    To be honest, he seems very unrepentant and selfish. He's offended that people don't trust him with their children, when the reality is that ANY GOOD PARENT would not trust him with their kids!

      I didn't get that sense from him that he was unrepentant. Remember he claims to have also been molested as a child. How many family molesters - fathers, step fathers, grandfathers, walk free? Too many. He had sex with a teenager and spent 15 years in prison for it.. Absolutely unacceptable behavior but should he be punished for life? Of course he should not be allowed near minors but I believe he has a right to build a life for himself and perhaps find a way to atone and give back productively to society.

      @@8ofwands300 -- of course he has a right to build a life for himself, literally nobody said he didn't. I'm talking about how he spent almost the entire documentary complaining angrily about how people percieve him as a pedo..... because he IS one.

    • @8ofwands300
      @8ofwands300 24 дня назад

      @@virg0_lem0nade I already said I didn't interpret him the way you did, though I didn't find him particularly likeable.. In the South you can get married at 15 in some states. Pedophilia, by the way, (look it up), describes sexual attraction to prepubescent children. Being attracted to teens is something different.... But we are fast and loose with our use of terminology in our society these days. What bothers me is that this guy gets cr@p in the comments, while people who participated in murder, also featured in this series, get nothing but praise, encouragement and support.

    Paul Jesus Christ forgiveness is all you need. His acceptance and His open arms. Society may call you unclean, but if you've repented, God will separate you from your sins as far as the East is to the West! Society acts like there's different degrees to sin, but sin is sin. We all need forgiveness and grace. I feel terrible for the victim and pray for them as well, but the whole Host of Heaven REJOICES over 1 sinner that repents! I'm rejoicing with Heaven on your behalf!

    I see in the comments that everyone is (understandably) not very forgiving of Paul. Ppl can commit murder and no one stigmatizes them like this. Imho this "attitude" is not working. We have no fewer sexual assualts etc than we used to. Isn't the ultimate goal to decrease these horrific crimes? Maybe we as a society need to reflect and attempt to change our perspectives in order to effect change i.e. less victims.
