Great video Matt. Physics stepping in here. That pressure cone you see on the entry, is due to how force is distributed. When the bullet hits, it compresses all the material under it, however, that force also spreads out. Shear force on glass (sideways) causes it to fracture radially away, while pressure downward does not. So, you get a cone of compression underneath the impact, and blown out glass around it. This is a really general explanation.

Me watching Matt knowing very well that only a diamond pickaxe is the only thing that will break obsidian.

This man used a gun to break obsidian instead of a diamond pickaxe, amazing.

I’m a physics major not an expert but I believe when you hit the sphere Center you compressed the sphere and made that point very strong. Your other rounds cause compression waves making the sphere resonate weakening it. The slug compressed a small area and the compression wave shattered the weaker sections that have already lost internal integrity. I’m going to show my professor this video tomorrow for sure!

Fun fact about obsidian; it breaks so that the edge is only one molecule thick, which makes it extremely sharp. For this reasons, some surgeons use obsidian knives. Be careful if you touch obsidian shards…

Obsidian is like the epic version of flint. regarding how sharp it was, the first 'advanced' cutting surgical tools thousands of years ago were made of obsidian too
