nice video, love the old school tricks and tatics. I've been trying to find my father a 73 nova like he used to have, not much out there anymore. i just bought a '86 square body gmc for my father on friday but i know he really wants a nova. it'll suffice for now. i think it's also neat to see right off the bat you noted the small differences between 2 and 4dr glass. small details like that means a lot these days.
A few months ago I bought an old 65 F250 Camper Special that sat in the woods for well over 30 years...I freed up the engine the same exact way that you did. It takes patience, though. Gotta be careful. Great video, man!
For the channel, pull engine, do an entire rebuild, as a teaching tool video. For the car, insert a 350V8 and be done with it. Then new brakes, new exhaust, new gas tank, new paint, new Interior, new steering wheel, new radiator, new hoses, and make this car a show car, cruiser, and go on power tour!
We got pretty much the same car. 71 4 door sat 20 years in a field in Oklahoma original 350 car . Took lotta time and patience to get it in a condition to hit the road again .
@@Shop209 the powertrain that was in the car when I got it was a mid 80’s 305 and a th350. The original 350 was long gone so I yanked that out put a fuel injected 5.7 in it and a 700r4

Nice I have a 69 4 door parts car but I might just put it back together to ,now that I found out there getting harder to find I’d like to see you fix yours up to be a street machine !!
I've had starters set up from just setting a few years. Had to turn them over by hand with spray lube and they were fine. I had a 72 with a six in it, very dependable but it was dissapp earing on me bit by bit. Good video.
Wow. This makes me appreciate just how in good condition I bought my 4 door in. I bought my 70, with a inline 6 250 in it, running and driving for just under $5k I think. But I'm a real simple mechanic still, so starting with something a bit easier for me is real ideal especially since I don't have a trailer or anything to haul cars around. I can't believe how complete that engine is! 😳 and it turns over! So neat!! I say, throw some mean tires on and have fun with it! Fun video! I can't believe it actually turned over! I hope you work on it more if possible. Sometimes it's fun to start on a new project.
Paid 7k for this one. It’s a 74 for door with 3 speed on the tree and. 250 inline. Love working on it. Almost everything you’re replacing makes a huge difference, but she still ran fine the way it was.

I suggest using none ethanol gasoline in it for the test trial to. You might be.,or could be surprised by the results.
I had already let mystery oil set in cylinders. It ended up being severely rusted valves not sealing along with cylinders. There will be a new video on that car soon.
First you probably have a lot more experience than me at this type of stuff. If it were mine and a manual transmission I'd say drag it up and down the street, in gear, without the power connected. Putting some heat and oil on those rings may free them up enough to start it. Since it's not a manual transmission, I'd load each cylinder with a mix of STP (or motor honey) and Marvel Mystery Oil, spin that sucker to coat the rings and cylinder walls. Put the spark plugs back in and keep spinning the motor while shooting either in it. Maybe it would crank. Maybe I'd try swapping in a HEI distributor for starting purposes. I keep a few HEI distributors, three hot batteries, lots of staring fluid, MMO and a jump box in my shop. (You can tell I work on complete garbage by that statement.) Good luck, I'll wait and watch.
I think you should get it running. What was the compression on the rest of the cylinders? Try oil in the cylinders to bump up the compression to try and get it running and get some heat cycles in it.
I’m all for the 4 door. I’d hold judgement of what to do with the motor till after you find why there’s no compression. Cylinders might need more than a hone. Thanks for the content John.
Awesome video John ! I’d love to see u tear into it ! Really common problem and having you walk us through the steps and showing us what you find would be awesome ! Take care bud
Do you have any videos on door window removal / repair. I have a 1972 and to get the window removed to fix the bottom metal trim that the rollers for the window regulator ride on.
Check the other cylinders and see how good or bad they all are. I'm thinking that maybe the valves aren't closing all the way and that's why there is no compression in that cylinder
You’re most likely correct. All cylinders are less than 30. Probably rusted exhaust valves. From the top side they all seem to be closing but probably not.
I had no idea the 2 door and 4 door had different sized windshields. I'll have to be carefull with mine. I bought a hood and front fenders allready. Are they the same for the 2 and 4 door models?
Do a budget 307 stroker. Use 4.0 Jeep pistons 5.7" rods with a 350 crank. Try not to get a cam with to much lift because those pistons don't have valve reliefs. Top it off with a set of 305 Vortec heads with some sort of RPM Airgap intake and without any porting it should be over 300 HP.
