Winter or studded tires are not mandatory in Fairbanks. However, when it is this cold the roads are not really slick. Ice is really only slick when you have enough pressure or high temp to form a water layer on it..Its too cold for that. Just like we don't generally use salt on the road....its too cold for that. We use 3/8" crushed gravel, which is most likely why the poster has a chipped and cracked windshield, just like most of us in Fairbanks.

The lowest temperature I drove in was 70 below or some such madness. The heater kept the inside of the Jeep to a balmy 0 degrees, and my wife was always ready with the ice scraper to scrape off the inside of the windshield so I could see (the defroster was a joke). After that winter I sold the Jeep and got a van. No, I don't miss shaking a thermometer at 70 below and hearing the frozen mercury inside rattle around...

My husband and I are trying to move away from Fairbanks. Came up here to build his career. Been here for 10 years. Crime is going up, budget cuts and government offices closing down and cutting educational programs (including college). Extreme winter where it hurts to even go outside. Kids want to go out and play outside but theirs no park, no comfort of outside for months. We want to live a more active lifestyle that we are use to living back in Oregon. Hiking every day of the year if we want to, camping, going to the beach, downtown of the city, going to an actual mall, having water parks, and more places to have fun in general (rather than just bars... and Walmart/Fred Meyers to go to) Yeah. Fairbanks has some beautiful things for sure! But just to visit. Not to live here for the rest of your lives! Ugh that’s depressing lol ahaha life is more than having 2 months of summer! And far more places in the world are more beautiful than here. The cons def our way the pros for this location. Atleast for us because we are def NOT home bodies! We always want to be outside and we can’t living here. It hurts your face too much and is uncomfortable with gear. I rather live somewhere where I only need to put some flip flops, shorts and tangtop and roll out of the house. Just saying.

Watching from Britain, amuses me when we get like 2 inches of snow the entire country comes to a grinding halt and yet Alaskans are just getting on with their day as normal! Would love to visit Alaska one day! Maybe when it's summer and enjoy the lovely mountains view.
the difference in how people respond to snow is wild, having moved from oregon to alaska. in oregon, you get 4 inches and everything shuts down. in alaska, it’s 40 below for days on end, or 4 feet of snow in a month, and people just keep on trucking
Cam Rocket that shit is untrue af, don’t listen to mofos in the lower 48’s actin like they know what it’s like up here, what y’all be smoking, you got Compton, Detroit, and Atlanta down there where pretty much everyone’s homeless or poor
We were there living on Wainwright from 2016 to September 2019. The winters are ruff and the summer of 2019 was bad with all the smoke. Good experience over all!
For someone from Maryland who hasn't experienced super harsh winters, it's very interesting to see how locals talk about the weather there. "Warming up to -12" is such a wild statement for someone who has never even seen such cold temperatures! But just like any climate you get used to it, and I'm sure you have lots of experience driving in snow and ice fog. It feels fast to me but in the same way someone from the country would see how I drive in the city where I learned to drive and be surprised
I live in Anchorage, it doesn't get as cold as it does in fairbanks, but after living in Anchorage for 20 years, it really doesn't feel cold after living with it for so long. Funny story when I visited Arizona phoenix to see family I was wondering how people could stand the heat! It's really hot there!
I agree. It's too hot in Arizona with temps up to 120F during the summer. It must have been the weather to drive me to do this, but I'm now going to Fairbanks during the winter for vacation to feel another weather extreme.
Now that's cold! As a wisconsin native now living in florida I can attest to some cold winters - not like that though. I bet the summers are gorgeous however.
CB's...Citizen Band radios were a fad in lower 48 in 70's...a necessity in Alaska...I was stationed at Eielson AFB in 73-74...a great assignment ! I want to go back soon for the memories...I know it has changed a lot.
It's been a dream of mine to get to experience -40 or colder, and I hope to get there sometime in the next few years. When I was a teenager I was in Anchorage when it was -3 F, and I was super excited, but this would be really awesome.
I live in Maryland and want to go to college somewhere down south, maybe Florida. It doesn't even get that cold here (coldest it gets any given year is like 0-5 degrees with -5 to -10 windchill), but I can't stand it. I've tried to give the cold a chance but I hate it unless it's snowing and I'm wearing 5 layers and sledding or playing snow football with friends. That said, Florida and warm/humid places in general aren't for everyone and I get that. I will say though I'd love to go ice fishing in the Great Lakes or somewhere up north.
I like how he says that people with 4wd are driving to slow. No one has the right to say that someone is driving to slow with those road conditions. If they wreck their the ones who have to deal with it not you.
Betty Weber - Anyone who has lived here for any amount of time knows you don’t drive in 4WD unless you absolutely have to. You drive in 2WD and only use the 4WD to get out of slick/deep situations. Driving on snow and ice in 4WD at speed only means that ALL your tire will break free and REALLY bury you in a snow bank. At which point your 4WD is useless.
Lived there from 60- 64. Saw the Kennedy assignation coverage, the English rock and roll invasion all on my family's black and white TV. Also experienced the earthquake. I didn't mind the cold in the winter, but hated the hordes of mosquitos in the summer.
Was stationed at Fort Wainwright from Oct 1961 until May 1963. While there we had a record -72 below. It was at or below -50 for two weeks. Froze inside barracks. We used our arctic sleeping bags to keep warm.
this exactly why I use mobil 1 in my car it pours at -40 with no problem, better than any other I've seen on the market. back in the day it would take 15-20 minutes for a quart of regular oil to empty from its container if was left outside at these temps
What grade of motor oil is used for weather like this? I don't understand how a car will start without an engine heater being outside at this temperature but I noticed there were cars everywhere.
Oh ok. Man i just miss that place. The one we had in town here in sc closed probably around 2008. I still have my old blockbuster card. Idk why but i had to keep it lol.
Thanks for sharing this! I lived in North Pole AK on Lana Turnabout for 8 years back in 87 - 95. I finally just got tired of the long cold winters. One January it never got warmer than -50 below for the whole month. I was in the Air Force and supporting the Army. We once went out to the Tanana Valley during the winter and actually experienced -81 below. We had an Air Force weather person with us that had the equipment to measure real air temp. I really love this area in the summer time, except some years their are too many wildfires and the area then stays smoky. That really sucks in the summer when that happens. I do go back to Alaska every year now, but mostly stay down in Kenai/Soldotna.
The cracked wind shields are a thing there too. The super cold temps make small chips grow fast. I grew up in fartbanks and love it there in summer/fall. But winters are brutal and boring as hell.
Ahhhh, what a great ending to this video, "The worst is when dogs that are chained up are eaten by wolves because they can't get away" O_O. But great vid other than that lol. Idk why I need to watch these though, I live here lol.

It looks so beautiful ! I’m originally from jersey but my family & I moved to Florida in 2004 & still live here, currently it’s 57 degrees at night, I wouldn’t move to Alaska but back up north to jersey or ny to experience all 4 seasons again
I guess if you can live in Alaska that 52 below you could live on Mars
My husband and I are trying to move away from Fairbanks. Came up here to build his career. Been here for 10 years. Crime is going up, budget cuts and government offices closing down and cutting educational programs (including college). Extreme winter where it hurts to even go outside. Kids want to go out and play outside but theirs no park, no comfort of outside for months. We want to live a more active lifestyle that we are use to living back in Oregon. Hiking every day of the year if we want to, camping, going to the beach, downtown of the city, going to an actual mall, having water parks, and more places to have fun in general (rather than just bars... and Walmart/Fred Meyers to go to)
Yeah.
Joanna King Come live in Houston, it never gets cold here! I think if you love warm weather this city is perfect. You can get large cheap housing and great food.
Extreme winters ……...The last 10 winters have been mild!
I was there in December 2003,IN FAIRBANKS was 43 Down 0 , Estaba muy Frio, I love ALASKA IM FROM ZACATECAS MEXICO THANKS , MY INGLISH IS BASIC TO WRITE
Wow talking about extreme temperature , 52 below zero ? The first time ever seen this in my life ,thanks for sharing with us , and keep warm .
So glad I'll never have to ride with you in weather like that!!
@@tripplefives1402 I wouldn't starve. I just wouldn't drive that fast coming or going.
@@tripplefives1402 no it's not that bad as you think it is.
OMG looks like another planet...
Sure ok
Really cool video!
Been there done that in 1989 thru 1992 coming back to do it again. Great place cold but the last frontier.
I like this video. Its like, that I drive the car.
I hope you can understand me, my english is not so good, I am from Vienna-Austria. And I like Alaska. If you have more of this videos, I want to see it. I have also videos of my car-drive. I was driving in lower Austria, styria, Vienna and Serbia, Hungary. Greetings from Europe.
Alaska is sooooooooo beautiful, I love it. I want to see it
Seems like you are driving fast hell if this were to happen in Houston the city closes
can't wait to be there in a few days, just bought my first house in Wasilla. Coming from Texas. I'M SO EXCITED!
Welcome to Alaska!
This is my home, I live 5 minutes away from where they were. Not always like that but yeah I can be rough sometimes.
i'm surprised a car still works at that temp!
I honestly just enjoyed the drive through another city while listening to a convo.. all in all I had fun.
Excellent driving skills
Who else saw this and lives in Alaska Fairbanks
Me ,i know all about fbks
Out to Ester here!
Mee
@Cam Rocket it is so i left as soon as i turned 18
Cam Rocket that shit is untrue af, don’t listen to mofos in the lower 48’s actin like they know what it’s like up here, what y’all be smoking, you got Compton, Detroit, and Atlanta down there where pretty much everyone’s homeless or poor
Does she talk so much because she is nervous?........ the way he drives makes me nervous!
Well, in Alaska we are really used to the -50f temps, so we’re really good at handling the vehicle
We were there living on Wainwright from 2016 to September 2019. The winters are ruff and the summer of 2019 was bad with all the smoke. Good experience over all!
They are on the Johansen which is one of our fastest in town highway/road of a whopping 55mph, lol, love it here!
2:42 I live in the hills beyond that overpass
looks so much like Minnesota :)
Such a peaceful wonderful place
I live in Anchorage, it doesn't get as cold as it does in fairbanks, but after living in Anchorage for 20 years, it really doesn't feel cold after living with it for so long.
Funny story when I visited Arizona phoenix to see family I was wondering how people could stand the heat! It's really hot there!
I agree. It's too hot in Arizona with temps up to 120F during the summer. It must have been the weather to drive me to do this, but I'm now going to Fairbanks during the winter for vacation to feel another weather extreme.
I spend my Summers in Phoenix and my Winters in Fairbanks! 30 years of it now! I struggle with the heat my self. I would take -40F over 110F any day.
@Hard Work1994 Fairbanks gets 95 Degrees in the summer and hits -60 nearly every winter.
Now that's cold! As a wisconsin native now living in florida I can attest to some cold winters - not like that though. I bet the summers are gorgeous however.
Fairbanks is the Dry Cold, Wisconsin is that Brutally wet cold that tears through you. At least here you can layer and be warm.
I think it's pretty warm for January in wisconsin right now. It's 2:43 in the Am and its 37 degrees in Green Bay.
CB's...Citizen Band radios were a fad in lower 48 in 70's...a necessity in Alaska...I was stationed at Eielson AFB in 73-74...a great assignment ! I want to go back soon for the memories...I know it has changed a lot.
When it’s this cold it actually warms up at a higher altitude.
You have totally driving too fast
No in cold weather it safer to drive cause tires stick
It’s so cold to the point where your bare hands will freeze to the ice in a matter of milliseconds
It's been a dream of mine to get to experience -40 or colder, and I hope to get there sometime in the next few years. When I was a teenager I was in Anchorage when it was -3 F, and I was super excited, but this would be really awesome.
I know, extreme weather is interesting.
Imagine going into the freezer after dumping hot water on your hands
After a second you feel it
Then you really feel it.
Come up to the north plains mt nd Canada in deep winter, you’ll get ur -40 with windchill
I’m gonna be flying up there from Dallas in a few day for work. Don’t think the weather will be bad though. Somebody take me on a tour lol.
it's kind of relaxing how these people can talk for ages about the same thing
I think I’ll stay in Florida where people dress like eskimos when it’s below 60 degrees
I dont miss that permanently iced-road conditions at all. Yeah ill stay here in Florida myself
We left Florida because of the heat and humidity, the cold here is not as bad as people think.
Alaska Dream Life Exactly, especially the southern part of the State.
What part of FL are u in
I like how he says that people with 4wd are driving to slow.
Yeah Burr 🥶 I can even hear the cold.
Lived there from 60- 64. Saw the Kennedy assignation coverage, the English rock and roll invasion all on my family's black and white TV. Also experienced the earthquake. I didn't mind the cold in the winter, but hated the hordes of mosquitos in the summer.
and I thought 53 with 5 mph wind chill was bad.....take care.
😂😂
lol 😂 whewww
Is it mandatory to drive all the time in the passing lane?
warpedbeyondhelp lol we don’t pay much attention to that here but get upset when a person doesn’t let you pass!
Sam K Welcome to the Alaskan Winter... Where the lights are optional and the lanes don’t matter!
I was up there from 86-90 and had the time of my life.
Good old Fort Wainwright!
Amazing alaska...I'm from indonesia
What grade of motor oil is used for weather like this? I don't understand how a car will start without an engine heater being outside at this temperature but I noticed there were cars everywhere.
Does better than my 2016 Challenger did... Do you have 18's with winter tires?
Id hate missing my ride home from work in that temp, it would be a death sentence i wouldnt leave work
People here sure drive fast, even in winter.
It’s because we drive so much in the winter, to the point where we are some of the best drivers in the world
Or their not scared of their vehicles capability
I know this video is a couple of years old, but ya'll still have a blockbuster! Im jealous
Chrispy841 No it’s close now
Oh ok. Man i just miss that place. The one we had in town here in sc closed probably around 2008. I still have my old blockbuster card. Idk why but i had to keep it lol.
Looks awesome
Just keep sending the oil south and take care of the polar bears. Pictures will be just fine
I live in Australia, it's late Autumn and it's still too bloody hot. I watch these videos for escapism. I want a cozy cottage in Alaska.
My friend lived here for 3 years and she tells me all the stories of how cold it was. But it’s such a small town that everyone knows each other.
How do you heat engine in -52F if you dont have electricty? I want to drive there from pittsburgh but not sure what to do about heating engine.
Wonder what the windchill factor is if you put your arm out the window on the highway
