I don't understand why the oxide layer is an issue at all. Aluminum oxide is incredibly hard and it's as much a part of the metal as the rest of it, so it's not like it's going to just fall off.
i want to ask a question, the oxide layer is a few nano meters tops immediately after exposing the fresh surface, so would it really effect the adhesion
@@danielstellmon5330 yeah the Desk PC case seems to pop up about once a year for most DIY channels... it's like they keep running out of new content...

For anyone looking to veneer anything in the future, be sure to tape the veneer together so there's no gaps before putting it onto the surface with glue/epoxy, rather than scrambling to tape it together during the process.
Gotta say I've been following Matt for a while and hearing him even bring up Linus's build and offer to link it warms my heart. We need more Matts in the world, keep at it bro
i did like to recomand respectfully, that it is a no go in airflow to overpower inled. you always have to power up the suction outlet. if you only had one fan you would go on the out let. this is all to prevent airflow stuck or creating a overpressure. you always want to have under pressure. please excuse my bad (german ) english. your work is great and i am watching for years.
As a female with a background in electrical engineering, and a love for DIY, I am loving this video and the aesthetically pleasing looks, which not many bright guys would care to even consider when creating their brilliant designs Impressive!
That will only cool the cpu or gpu. The rest of the mobo...the power supply ..etc....all need decent air flow too so they don't overheat and get wear and tear and fail prematurely
lol I checked prices and it's fking bananas! Noctua 40mm is each 17.90 euro! multiply it by 40 and it's 716 euro for the fans only WTF?? you could easily buy the cheapest brand I found locally "Gembird" and it only costs 1.90 each so it's only 76 euro for all! . Damn Noctua is fking stealing people and they still buy from them.
Another great build! I think a projector mounted underneath would be awesome! Projectors have gotten smaller & thinner so finding one that can fit wouldn't be too difficult... Then you can have a screen come out of your floating shelf idea which would really fit the whole theme of the build!
"Most people would assume that this is a normal wooden table" No, Matt, no. With your videos, most of us would assume that you've somehow incorporated a 95 inch 8k TV, several gaming systems, full surround sound, and a toaster into that table.
I need a toaster inside my desk now! I'm thinking if I angle it slightly and put powerful enough springs in, I could get it to pop out straight onto a plate Wallace and Gromet style.
Matt - You've ut done yourself here buddy. Even as a "real engineer" I appreciate your videos, I was grimacing when you laminated veneer over the topside "access panel bolts" but I admire your bravery running a PC on a couple of handfuls pf 40mm fans, and your ingenuity making it work on that limited airflow.
@@neophyte88 because it would make more sense to just take the top sheet off rather than lift, the entire aluminum sheet, and wood frame, and wood supports, and computer parts, then flip that all over to access the computer parts. I'd mount all the parts into the bottom half, have the top be the access point, and the lowered area for the ventilation port could be disguised as a raised platform for setting items on top of, rather than a lowered section underneath that doesn't quite mix with the goal of looking like a solid wood table, one looks like a raised item stand, the other looks out of place.
That is a fantastic idea but would definitely be tricky to pull off well since wireless charging won't work through the metal sheeting and needs to be within milimeters of the device you're charging.
@@montyp2000 maybe if you cut a hole for a wireless charger in the aluminum and then have the veneer over that? Don't know if it would be thin enough though

@@Stuugie. Those temps at that load isnt terrible. By no means great, but not terrible at the same time. You could probably get away with soft line, or even hard line watercooling in this desk though.
@@koleethan Water cooling is probably the only way to go as even two years ago this wasn't enthusiast hardware. With how thin this table is, I don't think you could mount rads and fans without making holes straight through since airflow has to go through the fins. A thicker table is needed no matter what...that 500w is also pretty weak, I wouldn't go below 850
This is so cool! My dad built an entire desk 20 years ago, with selves and drawers and the entire PC was neatly tacked in a drawer. This project reminds me of my dads project.
I'm lazier than that, i bought a corner suite for my lounge, seperated them into a sofa and chez longue type thing and then built and upholstered an end to fit on the chez longue so it looked like a sofa but contained a desktop pc and added a skinny little shelf to slide the keyboard into and wall mounted a curved monitor to the side and slightly to the front so now i can slob on the sofa and do stuff comfortably.
did the same thing, only added keyboard on slide-out and mounted the monitor flush so it stayed looking flat even in use. Mounted a 12" fan from a box unit to extract the air quietly. I wanted the laser projector keyboard, that would have been a good touch
Lots of woodworkers like myself use contact cement when applying veneer. Its a lot less stressful than trying to use epoxy and not very messy. It should yield better results too. Also when veneering something as large as a table its much easier to purchase a paper backed veneer thats already the correct width, rather than joining 2 or more veneers on edge the way we are shown in the video. Always ask questions before making an expensive mistake!
He can't know everything, lol. This is all really fascinating. I wonder who can actually afford to make this project, even HE didn't spend the full budget with all that was given to him. That's not even getting into how much skill this takes to make.
I actualy did something similar years ago, I had a desk with A thin drawer that could fit my old laptop perfectly with just enough room for most of the ports, so I just cut a part of the back panel for the cable and it looked just like in this video just a bit thicker!
Now that I know that Theon can build so many cool things I have to rewatch the whole series with a new perspective. How could it have been he didn't escape the Boltons using some clever engineering solution like an invisible rope or in a DIY submarine?!
My 1994 Amiga did the same thing, my 1970 Grundig colour TV would heat the whole room, the bloody lights would dim when you switch it on because of the massive degaussing current, then there was a loud 17khz whine as the HT transformer powered up, followed by a loud static hiss & crackle as the 60KV tube supply powered up, about 3 minutes later you actually get a picture, but the colour keeps changing as it warmed up. And forget digital tuning, this was done using 6 pot core ferrite tuners in a drawer on the front panel. That was your 6 channels! :P
Watercooling would have been the way better choice in this build because you got a lot of surface area which is perfect for huge radiators and extremly silent fans
So glad to find a tutorial that I can work off of, and draw ideas from. I was thinking of using a standard sized power supply, given my proclivity for gaming, and figured that what I could probably do is create a side cabinet on the desk to house it. A secondary, fun idea I was toying with was extending the power button to the siding, where a small hole would be placed for it to set in, along with a button covering with the power symbol etched into it to maintain the wooden appearance, possibly to do something similar with a disk drive and USB ports with little sliding covers.
Email me your insta profile we'll have a chat and recommend you according your require and don't worry I won't ask anything in return 😂 just want to help
Wow, I just checked out your channel and I'm surprised I wasn't already subbed! I'm think I'm finally committed to actually learn to roll a quarter on my knuckles, it seems not so as much a learning curve as it is a method.
another little note: Prime95 is legitimately way beyond the load of most PC games, or even most render jobs. so really, that's actually quite impressive
Amazing build, so elegant! If you allowed a quarter inch or so more thickness you could also add a lining of vinyl or rubber under the top sheet which would make it even quieter, even making it sound more solid when you tap the top of it

The oxide layer in Aluminum forms back almost immediately. The benefit of sanding is more to give the epoxy a rougher surface to adhere to.
WEST System actually recommends "wet sanding" the aluminum with the epoxy, which gives tooth but also protects from oxide formation during sanding.
I started to point that out, but thought “does anyone care as long as it works?” I also started to suggest he vacuum bag it, but then he would have to show how to make that.
@@buddy64118 Excellent points :)
