For those of you who want an actual answer, there could be a couple different reasons why he does this. 1) To agitate the water so he can see it better. 2) To gauge the distance from the top to the water. 3) To break the surface tension (Long answer: Bonds form between the water molecules called hydrogen bonds. The rock breaks the bonds in order for a smooth contact with the water for the diver.) Thank you to those who corrected me in the comments!
Not only does it help with surface tension, but it can help you time your rotation. In other words, you can get a feel for hoe long youll fall to make sure youre in a safe position at the time of impact.
It's to break the surface tension of the water. Old iron workers that built bridges were trained to throw their hammer into the water if they were falling. Doing so would often save their lives

*For anyone wondering, throwing the rock before jumping, disrupts the stagnant (still, non flowing, flat surface) water to make it much much less painful when you hit the water after it’s been disturbed by the rock 😊 Basically newton’s law of movement; an object (in this case water) in motion remains in motion (or not in motion), until acted upon by an unbalanced object…. Aka the rock. Making it move to allow for more movement to occur more easily. In straight terms, if you throw something like a rock down to disrupt the water first, your less likely to “water flop” 😂🫨 The more you know 🌈* (If you understand the last thing I said, we’re probably about the same age and we should be friends 😂🤭😘)
for someone who wants an actual answer, there are a few reasons. 1. when he throws it, it breaks the water tension so it wont feel like he hit a truck when entering the water. 2. when you throw a rock, it falls at a certain speed, and when you count, you can gauge how far the drop is. sometimes the depth perception from up high can feel weird, and this can reassure divers how big of a drop it is. 3. it was not the reason in any of these clips, but sometimes divers will break away loose rocks from a cliff they are jumping from. that way they have a more secure, and controlled takeoff. otherwise you could possibly get put into a coma if you hit the water the wrong way. you can also break bones... 4. as I said before, depth perception can be tricky, and if you are jumping out, throwing a rock can let divers know how far they need to jump, or simply just to know exactly where they hit so they can more successfully do tricks. or just to jump. they are being careful, thats all. Edit: if someone actually read this, thank you. and I hope this helped :)
It's mainly superstition. Yeah less expirienced divers could use the help by looking at the rock, but points 2 and 4 don't apply to these clips because they aren't looking at the rock.
hey , the main reason is to indicate to the "save team" where u will land and they can come closer to help in the shortest time if it's needed (bad fall can happen anytime)
Nope. Its just to get air bubbles in the water so when you hit te water, it wouldkt hit to hard. Swimmingpools with high jumpplanks habe a system for this. With a button..
The rock is actually an injured professional high diver. His injuries were so gruesome that he looks like that now…don’t judge. Dude is just helping the guy feel human one more time.
What most people don't realise is that rocks are sensational high divers, but terrible swimmers. It's all well and good cheering them on as you marvel at their descent, but it's probably the last thing they'll ever do.
It's to break surface tension. Water is like concrete, when the water breaks the area surface tension even if he messes up some he will likely be alright. Probably does help for spotting though.
It makes the water white for better vision of the surface rushing at you, it breaks the surface so u dont get a wedgie, it chases away fishies so theirs no unwanted collisions, it gives the jumper a mental splash timer and it's good luck. So the rock really does every dam thing. In fact I know a guy that unfortunately didn't make it because ppl had filled in his deep diving hole with to many lucky splash rocks over a holliday weekend. My poor unfortunate friend Mr Fred. His dog's heart has been broken sad for this tragedy ever since it happened bro, poor Dino.
It gives you reference to the distance from water. Spinning you see blue and light blue, but with the white ripples you can have a reference marker indicating the distance you have left
Damn I'm dumb! I thought he saw a rough looking patch of water, that was selling meth to child. He threw the rock because he wanted the Crack dealer waves attention
To break the water tension before he jumps 🎉🙌👏 that very smart, hitting a flat water surface at the speed is similar to hitting concrete at that speed!😢😅
I heard it was for breaking the surface tension of the water, but it's actually for the surface tension of his biceps and forearms from releasing the rock. His arms feel lighter so he can free fall more freely.
@@ktown604 because he knows he’s X amount of feet above it. Through the whole jump he is constantly adjusting and SPOTTING his landing. He look’s away because he knows where he is and doesn’t want to blow his face apart from the speed. Would you stare directly into a fire hose full blast? Because that’s what it will feel like if you stared at the water while entering. Some women have given themselves an extra hole down there from entering the water using the wrong form. Mythbusters found that “breaking the surface tension” prior to entering water. Does absolutely nothing.
He grew up with those rocks in his home town of Milwaukee. They always dreamed of BASE jumping together and he promised those rocks he’d take’m one day. What a guy fulfilling his promise. Sad part is the small rock never made it back 😢
He gets 2 things, first : he breaks the water tension so the impact is less hard. Two: he gets to know how much airtime he gets before landing in the water
its all to do with distance perception as when at hight its hard to judge water. Thats why cliff divers and high divers have water spraying on top of still water.
It’s supposedly to break water surface tension so the water doesn’t resist you as hard soon entry. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure you’d have to basically be following the rock down for it to work tho bc the water surface will just form again quickly. That’s why at the Olympics, it is a constant mist for the diving events. I believe doing this actually serves the purpose of visualizing the free fall. you fall roughly the same speed of any rock, and cliff jumping often occurs at awkward, non conventional/practiced heights. So having something you can watch fall before you, to gauge the extra quarter and half seconds for rotation is huge. Obviously in this video, dudes are just throwing a rock and looking away/diving multiple seconds after the rocks contact with the water. I believe it’s just a collective habit of the cliff jumping community, and plenty people do it without any real thought into why it’s being done.
Possibly the closest incorrect answer to the truth. Actually it was more he was causing a glitch in The matrix in other words breaking the surface tension of the water to lessen the impact when his body hits
Ripples give a visual clue to spot the landing. Really glassy water sometimes can mirror the sky when your flipping. Helps you figure out timing and trajectory if you’ve never jumped the spot before. Surface tension disruption is not significant with a rock. That is not the reason we throw rocks
It's the surface tension. Jump and forget to disturb the waters surface tension, bet you will throw a rock if u still walk good. But all clif diving do something to disturb still water. Waterfalls work good too. Doesn't take much but if you give a Dann about getting old with your body intact, you'll bomb a rock. When you jump you adjust yourself by watching the water come at you not a count to time. Timing is visual. I don't have to be pro to know that. You learn that by the time you start 10m jumps
This is mostly done in areas where there is more surface water tension, like lakes. If the water is too still, the person jumping breaks the tension-that can be painful and destructive. But By throwing a stone first, cliff jumpers break the tension of the water.
Either surface tension like everyone has been saying but I think it allows him to count how long it takes to hit the water, so he can decide on what tricks he should do before jumping
This is good idea but in order for it to work you would need to know the weight of rock before dropping so he can use weight and time to determine the height this will work better if you brought a 5lb weight with you every time you dive
its to symbolize his struggles in the past when he felt like he had hit «rock bottom».Its a way of showing gratitude for where he is now, and even tho he is at the top he will always remember the hard work and dedication it took.
@@skoobyi i was just joking. Its actually because he checks the water for ice. if he dont have a thermostat on him he cant posibly know the temprature, and therfore he cant know if the water is frozen. So by throwing the rock he is 100% sure that theres no ice. In a case where there is ice the stone will make a hole in it that he can jump thru. Look at it as safety measures. This guy said in an interview «better safe than sorry»
@@stillcursed4135 Wrong again. The real reason is because “It breaks the surface tension. Water molecules H20 are dipolar, meaning one side of it has partial positive (hydrogen) and one partial negative side (oxygen). And since opposite charges attract each other, the water molecules will align hemselves in an ordered way to create a "surface", It's called hydrogen bonds. When they throw the stone this arrangement is disturbed, the water molecules become much more disordered, the bonds breaks and so does surface tension. When the diver jumps in, the impact will become less hard because he isn't falling on a "surface".
@@skoobyi ACTUALLy the rock has his victims ash so he makes you think that it’s for surface tension ,but in fact he’s just getting rid of his grandma’s mysterious death
The real reason they throw stones in is to break the barrier of the water surface. In the Olympics they spray the surface of the pool with water as diving in to still water is like hitting concrete. If the water has ripples, it absorbs the energy of the impact easier. In short, the stone is taking all the impact from him.
It also gives us perspective of height and distance yo. Sometimes 100ft looks lower than 70 from different launches. Ricks and cliffs make everything look lower than it is, and big open and structured ramps look so soo much higher, so it’s good to know where you’re going to land roughly. Often when there’s rocks or earth to clear at the same time
Oh Thank You!!! At first I thought everyone was joking then I started realizing not one person knew as to why he actually threw it. Glad to see we're not completely to far gone yet. 💯
Because the surface of the water is hard. After throwing a rock into water. It softens the water up in that particular area. Which it reduces chances of getting hurt like breaking bones severe headtrama etc. So what that jumper/diver is doing is very smart knows exactly what he is doing. Where he wouldnt endanger himself. Knowing after he throws that rock into water. He only have so much of time to make that jump and dive into the water before that water splash goes away. Or else water would harden back up in that particular area. If he have not done what he did, still made that jump. He could have been incredibly injured. Then drowning would take accord.

In straight terms, if you throw something like a rock down to disrupt the water first, your less likely to “water flop” 😂🫨 The more you know 🌈*
(If you understand the last thing I said, we’re probably about the same age and we should be friends 😂🤭😘)
for someone who wants an actual answer, there are a few reasons. 1. when he throws it, it breaks the water tension so it wont feel like he hit a truck when entering the water. 2. when you throw a rock, it falls at a certain speed, and when you count, you can gauge how far the drop is. sometimes the depth perception from up high can feel weird, and this can reassure divers how big of a drop it is. 3. it was not the reason in any of these clips, but sometimes divers will break away loose rocks from a cliff they are jumping from. that way they have a more secure, and controlled takeoff. otherwise you could possibly get put into a coma if you hit the water the wrong way. you can also break bones... 4. as I said before, depth perception can be tricky, and if you are jumping out, throwing a rock can let divers know how far they need to jump, or simply just to know exactly where they hit so they can more successfully do tricks. or just to jump. they are being careful, thats all.
Edit: if someone actually read this, thank you. and I hope this helped :)

Ahh I didn't know that! I just find the most crowded places to jump.
Finally a real answer! Thank you.
So you throw the rock straight down then jump outward? That's not spotting your flips, that's superstition.
It's to break surface tension. Water is like concrete, when the water breaks the area surface tension even if he messes up some he will likely be alright. Probably does help for spotting though.
@@Unstable23 that was my exact answer pretty much. So to hear about how it's used to spot was not what I was expecting.
It makes the water white for better vision of the surface rushing at you, it breaks the surface so u dont get a wedgie, it chases away fishies so theirs no unwanted collisions, it gives the jumper a mental splash timer and it's good luck. So the rock really does every dam thing.

I heard it was for breaking the surface tension of the water, but it's actually for the surface tension of his biceps and forearms from releasing the rock. His arms feel lighter so he can free fall more freely.
This a fact?
Mythbusters busted that myth. What exactly are you breaking the surface tension from? More water. It’s to spot his landing
@@Bearded_Drone Then why does he look away before it hits the water?
@@ktown604 because he knows he’s X amount of feet above it. Through the whole jump he is constantly adjusting and SPOTTING his landing. He look’s away because he knows where he is and doesn’t want to blow his face apart from the speed. Would you stare directly into a fire hose full blast? Because that’s what it will feel like if you stared at the water while entering. Some women have given themselves an extra hole down there from entering the water using the wrong form.

Breaks the surface tension of the water. Softer landing. 👍🏻
Yes
If you land in the same spot....neither one did.
No
Mythbusters showed that's a myth
its all to do with distance perception as when at hight its hard to judge water.
To boost ones morale. "If a stone can do it, why can't I!"
But the stone sank bro
@Spanked ya Kid i think it is one's not ones

He wanted to make sure there wasn't a glitch in the matrix
Finally the correct answer! :)
Naw this the actual answer fr tho
Lmao
🤣🤣🤣 hilarious dude.
Thank you
It's the surface tension.
Finally someone is right.
But he didn't watch the surface after throwing 🤔
This is mostly done in areas where there is more surface water tension, like lakes. If the water is too still, the person jumping breaks the tension-that can be painful and destructive. But By throwing a stone first, cliff jumpers break the tension of the water.
That's his way to give the fish nearby a heads up so no one gets killed.

Not true lmao
No, it’s straight up science
When the diver jumps in, the impact will
become less hard because he isn't falling on a "surface".

Because the surface of the water is hard. After throwing a rock into water. It softens the water up in that particular area. Which it reduces chances of getting hurt like breaking bones severe headtrama etc. So what that jumper/diver is doing is very smart knows exactly what he is doing. Where he wouldnt endanger himself. Knowing after he throws that rock into water. He only have so much of time to make that jump and dive into the water before that water splash goes away. Or else water would harden back up in that particular area. If he have not done what he did, still made that jump. He could have been incredibly injured. Then drowning would take accord.
