CLIP DESCRIPTION:
General Patton (George C. Scott) commissions a weather prayer from the Third Army chaplain before engaging in the Battle of the Bulge.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In 1943 North Africa, George Patton (George C. Scott) assumes command of (and instills some much-needed discipline in) the American forces. Engaged in battle against Germany's Field Marshal Rommel (Karl Michael Vogler), Patton drives back "The Desert Fox" by using the German's own tactics. Promoted to Lieutenant General, Patton is sent to Sicily, where he engages in a personal war of egos with British Field Marshal Montgomery (Michael Bates). Performing brilliantly in Italy, Patton seriously jeopardizes his future with a single slap. While touring an Army hospital, the General comes across a GI (Tim Considine) suffering from nervous fatigue. Incensed by what he considers a slacker, Patton smacks the poor soldier and orders him to get well in a hurry. This incident results in his losing his command-and, by extension, missing out on D-Day. In his final campaign, Patton leads the US 3rd Army through Europe. Unabashedly flamboyant, Patton remains a valuable resource, but ultimately proves too much of a "loose cannon" in comparison to the more level-headed tactics of his old friend Omar Bradley (Karl Malden). Patton won 7 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Scott, an award that he refused.

This clip ends just short of the best part. Right as he says "Amen", the snow stops falling. Patton looks up to exclaim "That man's got connections! He deserves a metal!".
And we should shape that metal into a medal. ;)
@@Kharnellius😂
*Medal
I think that Patton also says, "Promote that man; he is in good standing with the Lord."
@@oilersridersbluejays I wonder if Patton could skate, maybe he could help the Oilers win a cup.

I always love the side glance Patton gives the chaplain as he walks away.
Solid acting
If God asks you to do one thing, and your General asks you to do another, you’d better hope God will be forgiving...because your General won’t be. 😈
I use this prayer as the blessing for our Christmas dinner every year. My wife doesn’t appreciate it.
As long as it doesn't start a food fight.
My late father- Lester Jamison- was in the 101st, surrounded at Bastogne. When I first saw this movie, I asked him about the weather. He just shook his head, wouldn’t talk about it.
I mean, of all the things he wouldn't talk about, he refused to talk about the weather? :|
Band of Brothers really went fully into how unbelievably unprepared they were for the bitter cold of that place and time. If you haven't watched that series, do yourself that favor. It's on the same level of personal and powerful as Saving Private Ryan, though historically based.
My grandfather was at Bastogne he told me some stuff about the fighting and weather he said it was so cold at times he used his socks to keep his hands warm and from cramping up due to the bitter cold he said he did it in intervals because he had to keep his feet from getting frostbitten very miserable conditions
@@luizmoraes181A lot of WW2 vets didn't want to relive the war in any way. My uncle helped liberate Nordhausen, and he refused to say a word about it to the day he died. It must have been beyond horrible
My father fought in Italy, I ask him about his war experience. He would not talk about it. My brother who fought in Vietnam during the Tet offence would not talk about it.
Rt. Rev. Msgr. James Hugh O'Neill (January 14, 1892 - April 17, 1972) was an American Catholic priest who served as a chaplain in the United States Army from 1926 to 1952, rising to the rank of brigadier general. While serving as chaplain of the Third United States Army during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, he composed the famous "Weather Prayer" at the request of the Third Army's commander, General George S. Patton.
Patton had O'Neill awarded the Bronze Star for his prayer.
Thank you I didn’t know that I never want to forget those guys and know more about the ones I’ve never heard of.

You will be remembered as a legend.
I remember hearing about his death when it happened. Hard to believe it was that long ago now.

It actually happened. The weather quickly broke and the Third Army had its air covet and recon back. The chaplain got a bronze star!
"That chaplain stands in good with the Lord and I want him decorated."
@@LordZontarI’m still surprised at how shocked the Chaplain was here, initially. It’s not like a weather prayer is some kinda blasphemous thing, is it? Worst that God could do is Deem It Fit to not make the weather the way Patton would want it.
❤😢it was an amazing prayer 🙏
This is actually a common thing in movies, for instance the gray, after liam neeson gets mad at God and prays he realizes that he is in the den of wolves, God answered his prayer before he even prayed, God braught him to the last good fight that he would ever know.

Patton: One of the greatest Christmas movies of all time ...
It isn’t Christmas until Hans Gruber goes skydiving out of Nakatomi Plaza without a parachute.....
One of my favourite scenes of any film. The action on screen is dramatic and violent - the tank, the explosions, the flamethrower, the swirling snow - but the soundtrack is eerily calm and disconnected. Just Jerry Goldsmiths atmospheric score and Patton's weather prayer. Sublime.

Also my favorite scene of so many others in this movie .
Thank you! I've studied this scene for years and could never quite put my finger on why it affected me so viscerally. You've nailed it.
I noticed a similar cinematic technique in the christening scene from the Godfather. Holy music plays during the sacred ceremony whilst Micheal's henchmen ruthlessly murder anyone who stands in his of his criminal empire 😳

Next day: beautiful weather.
Patton: "Guard! Get me that chaplain. He stands in good with the Lord and I want to decorate him!"
+Catzilla Actually, Patton said "Cod" not guard. Lieutenant Colonel Charles R. Codman was Patton's aide, and was a real life character. Unfortunately, Paul Stevens, the actor that played Cod, died at age 65 in 1986.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_R._Codman
it was actually his Chief of Chaplains who actually wrote that...a little different from the movie...Hollywood
Catzilla: Patton might as well have said, "Guard! Get me that chaplain. He stands in good with Zeus (or Odin, or Allah, or the Tooth Fairy) and I want to decorate him!"

@@Merlinever Yes but he didn't.
And his prayer was answered.
@@timbuktu8069: So the weather changed.
So what?
The weatrher ALWAYS changes.
That someone prayed for something and then it happened to happen does not serve as proof that the prayer worked; there has never been any proof or scientific evidence that prayer - pretending to talk to someone who isn't there - accomplishes anything.
Not knowing the answer to a question, or being able to explain why something happened, does not serve as proof or evidence of anything except that the answer or explanation is not yet known, and certainly does not serve as proof for the existence of any supernatural being or of such a being's intervention.

Patton’s religious leanings were non-traditional anyways. He was a big believer in reincarnation but morphed that into a Judeo-Christian framework. He sort of mixed eastern and western philosophy together.

Reminds me of Joshua praying for more sunlight for battle.
nice prayer, very humbling for a legendary american general of ww2.
The humility is in the fact that Patton recognized who the higher power was and knew his part versus His part. This was following the Jesuit motto of St. Ignatius of Loyola (also a soldier): "Work as if everything depending on you; pray as if everything depended on God."
Chaplain: You will actually find time to pray this?
Patton: I sure will! Every gawddam day!
Better film making in these 2 and a half minutes than anything else that's come out in the past 10 years

God Bless the WW-2 soldiers and that generation! America owes them much.
The world owes them.....
This is a true story, but it was also effective. Four weeks later, the weather broke for a few days. Truly our god is a awesome god.
I absolutely love this scene. You see Patton praying for good weather while you see both Germans and Americans in a desperate fight to the death. For example, the half track killing Germans with a mounted machine gun and running over a barricade only to be hit with flame thrower.
If We Have A Person Like Our General Patton The Military Would Be More Disciplined
Brilliant the way the prayer does overlook the killing of fellow man. Absolutely some of the best cinematography I have ever seen too.
If those men who fought those days could see what their victories wrought, they'd have refused to move from their bedrolls.
Catholic "padres" did a lot in times of war - usually helping soldiers under fire, reason why many received medals and decorations. But this is quite unique, eh
Der Alte It wasn't just catholic there were very brave chaplains. In fact there was a saying. When the chaplain goes over the hill, it'll be getting just right for me!
Der Alte: "unique", perhaps.
Embarassingly idiotic, most certainly.
How did Gen. Patton or the Chaplain know that God had changed the weather because a prayer had been offerred to hin tio do that?
Not knowing the answer to a question does not serve as proof of anything, except that the answer is not yet known, and certainly does not serves as proof for the existence of any supernatural being or the abiliuty of such a being to do anything.
How disgracefully ignorant that men serving in our forces as chaplains ever "recieved medals or decorations" for no other reason than that they, and the men they served with, had been indoctrinated to believe that chaplains somehow had the ability to talk to someone who wasn't there who would in turn cause anything to happen.
@@Merlinever, you say too much of the atheistic small talk that no one cares about.
@@TheGrenadier97 : Interesting that you did not respond to my question, "How did Gen. Patton or the Chaplain know that God had changed the weather?"
Those who claim to not acre about reality are those who are afraid to face it; when it comes to the truth, one can never say too much.
@@Merlinever They didn't know. It didn't matter. Prayer is a source of hope for people who have faith, and when things go the way they wanted them to it gives them more hope--when things don't, most people don't blame their god or gods so it doesn't make them lose any more hope than they would have, otherwise. In this case, I'd say the chaplain earned his Bronze Star because he wrote a powerful message, and the fact that its timing coincided with better weather was of great value to the morale not only of the soldiers but to the civilians who read about it in the newspapers. While I'm sure the morale boost to soldiers fighting in the cold without rest for days was small, it was still worth it--you take what you can get.
The point being: religion is a source of hope for a lot of people. It's also the source of endless suffering and hatred. Two sides of the same coin. Stick to criticizing the latter: when you go off on people for their faith when it's an inspiring and uplifting tale, you just look like a contrarian jackass.
Almighty and most merciful Father we humbly beseech thee of thy great goodness to restrain this immoderate weather with which we have to contend. Grant us fair weather for Battle.
