As soon as you take off a HDDs platter cover, the pressure within the drive gets messed up and the logic board no longer has any idea how to calibrate the heads. The drive is as good as dead or at least will be after a short while of attempting to continue to run. Think of it like someone making it so you can't breathe... you won't die immediately, but you will choke out until you do. It's kinda the same principle for a HDD. I wouldn't be surprised if this drive starts making a head knocking sound soon so he's forced to unplug it. A cool build nonetheless
@@Crispe1Official it depends on the HDD, not all of them are helium filled, some have a hole to equilze pressure with ambiant pressure. some companies are probably taking notes though
HDDs are definitely not running a low pressure and I've only ever seen pictures of helium filled ones. I don't think I've ever seen an HDD without a pinhole for pressure equalization. The drives probably died because of dust or something getting knocked about during disassembly. Or the RGB strips created enough interference to break something, but I doubt it.
for anyone trying to do similar stuff that runs into the lack of 12v power when the system is turned off, there’s a slightly easier way to get standby power that doesn’t involve splicing into the 24 pin connector: most modern motherboards have a bios setting that gives all usb ports 5v from the standby line, so using that and just hooking up the boostconverter to an internal usb 2.0 header gives you the same functionality, slightly less jankily
@@immianow it seems like he used a splitter or extension cable so it's fine. also some motherboards can hook up separate usb to standby or 5v (so you don't overload the 2A of the standby) and if you're using 12VO, you have a 12V standby so no need for a boost converter

i have to flip the switch on my PSU every time i shut down my computer because Windows Update broke something and my computer will attempt to boot up automatically at 1:00 AM every night if it has power. this has the quite nice side effect of needing to flip a toggle switch AND press a button to turn on my computer, which is still satisfying even 2 years later. thus, i can confidently say i would absolutely purchase a case that has 2-3 toggle switches on the front, perhaps even a dial, just to turn the PC on.
Hell yeah, totally agree. My last case I added a couple aircraft style toggles like his (but without the lights), loved it. I really like how he has to flip all 3 to enable the power switch, I want that. It ended up being a bit more involved than I expected. Didn't occur to me that PC power buttons are pretty much always momentary swtiches, and it was actually kind of hard to find momentary toggles like that, but I did find some. 14:20 Typically for opening HDDs, it needs to be done in a clean room. Quite literally a single spec of dust so much as touching the platter will cause it to fail when trying to read. Some are also specifically pressurized with helium and other gases to allow the read heads to move smoother and read better, so removing the top could have also caused them to depressurize and fail.
Most HDDs have a breather hole to enable them to work at any altitude. The cases are _not_ pressure sealed. Helium filled HDDs are out there, but they are rarer, usually only used for network storage so you tend to see them more widely used in cloud infrastructure. A home gamer will have an SSD over a helium drive any day. The most important aspect of putting a drive back together is tension or torque on the fasteners. At factory the fasteners are tightened in order and the drive is calibrated for that precise distortion, because changing the tension will change the physical shape of the disk. Adding in plastics will change too many physical properties that I imagine even a recovery firm would have trouble getting a disk like this to work. Finally, the clean rooms for HDD maintenance are usually ISO 5 (On a scale of 1 to 9, 9 being the least clean) or "class 100" - they're still quite dusty 100k 0.1μm particles per m³, but quite tight temperature and humidity controls. With the RGB HDDs, the reason they died is likely from the drive having a vacuum seal to contain something other than air, like helium, to reduce air friction. I believe this is fairly common in newer and especially very high capacity hard drives
HDDs are susceptible to damage from even the most minute amount of dust from anything other than a high grade clean environment, the services that do HDD repair and data recovery use either high end clean cabinets or full on clean rooms to disassemble them
Given that Fractal has released STL's for a Fractal North Pi case, you could print that and RGB it. Or figure out how to 3d print the full case in the funfeti fil, and RGB the entire case.

@@caeryllium relax. its an opinion.
I bought the same case for my build, but I’m the target audience who pays extra for no rgb. I even bought the version with no glass. Still love your project.
rgb plumbing? rgb upstairs neighbors water heater
Oh my god it's a good doggy! :)
The only reason I'm not an RGB fan is my lack of creativity, but with this monster i think the "everything is rainbows" suits it, especially since it looks rather dignified when powered off!
If you can individually control every RGB on that monster i hope you take the time to make some sweet themes for it!
You might also want to point a webcam at it and stream that sucker! It is a thing to behold!
those leds draw more watts then the computer. awsome
I'd be interested to know how thermals are because he basically crammed his pc full of mini heaters
Man I dont know how you manage all of this! amazing video as always, what a project
The thing that surprised me the most about this video was finding out that your computer runs Windows and not Linux.
Loved the RGB wood. I might try that with warm white LEDs one day.
Oh wow, that's such a great looking case. Now I kinda want one. (I'm not above color but I want more cozy mood lighting than throbbing rainbows, and the wood slats would go well with the fireplace style effect I usually go for.) You did crimes to that case, good for you.
The thing about cooling with pre-warmed air is it absolutely matters, particularly the 4090 FE blow-through coolers blasting directly into CPU towers, significantly affecting the CPU fan ramp.
Why it's fine here: the rad covers all the intakes, can't get away from it. It's only diminishing returns, plenty of returns left over.
Install Artemis RGB. The ultimately and uniform unit to ergonomically ergo your bleds
honestly, the idea of LED on fake wood is amazing for decoration in general
That case looks great. Im slowly filling every room of my condo with govee junk and i love it.
I'm more of a "less is more" kind of guy but sir, I am in awe of your skills and ingenuity!
Also, I love your puns even if I don't catch all of them (with English not being my first language).
I somehow missed the first episode until last night and was wondering how long I’d have to wait before I saw the next part. Imagine my ergobleDelight to see it on my first ergoBreak at work. Amazing! (Also now I’m lowkey tempted to get some of that low-profile strip and make an ergobled phone case??)
I don't think i've ever needed sunglasses to look at a computer before - this is fantastic!
never thought id see the day you would actually finish a part two
And here I thought my setup was special with aRGB hardline fittings. Talk about getting 1UP’ed
Yes Zack, the only guy I know who has a PC that it itself is brighter than anyone's monitor or TV 😂 I imagine when you're done with this, it will just be like looking at a flashbang. Now that would be optimal.
Edge band covering led strips is genius. Need to find a use for this around the house.
One of the best video's ever created. Well done my friend, well done.
Amazing! I love it when messing around yields such great results!
14:20 Opening the HDD introduces dust on the platter. The reading arm floats mere nanometres above it, so even a tiniest bit of dust will fuck it up.
Ya know what? I watch a ton of tech RUclipsrs and you my friend how out rgbleded them all despite everyone of them trying their best, well done (slow clap)
My gosh it took him less than a month to release part 2. It’s a miracle
I could see doing this to make a mini wooden "fireplace" where the wood bars would have programmable LEDs displaying a flaming pattern when the overhead lights are turned off
"RGBest Patrons" was it for me.
Good job bro. Love the wood face with rgb. That's a good idea and reminds me of those wood clocks that look like a block of wood but have LED behind them.
Scraping the RGBottom of the RGBarrel a little RGBit is the greatest poetry I think I've ever heard.
The RGB velcro wraps are chef's kiss.
I have no words to describe my thoughts on this… other than “wow”
The edge banding was a master stroke
the issue with the hard drive is that they are so sensitive to dust that the skin flakes from the air where you open them causes them to fail. you have to open and modify it in what is the equivalent of an airtight perfectly ventilated box to be able to mod it within reason. you would also have to not be in the room because of shedding dead skin will harm it
You fricken madlad!
i bought my first 3d printer last week, i've already printed a spool holder and some gridfinity stuff, (and a benchy or two)
i found you because of searching 3d printing on youtube. i'm not sure if i love my printer or you more
love from canada
17:49 Was.. was that an MXC reference??
Don't forget to find some colorshifting paint! That’d look awesome on your case.
Like, the same kind of stuff you’d find on DipYourCar’s channel, and/or putting that on top of mood ring paint as well.
You should check wood ABS if you havent
Its perfect for building things like this
Acetone smoothing it acts like a wood stain too
Though the veneer approach came up amazingly
Loved both videos!
my god - it's like a cyber unicorn took a shit and molded a PC out of it. I can't stop watch this video. Amazing!
5:39 whats that? never heard of arrjeebee ellie deez
This is gorgeous. I did a much much much less complex rgb build. Nothing special. But this makes me regret not adding more. I may have to revisit.
Rgb toilet bowel is a thing. Got mine on temu for 3 bucks. It truly is a nice ambience
The mxc most extreme elimination reference is insane. Nice.
love this channel. well done and thank you
With the RGB HDDs, the reason they died is likely from the drive having a vacuum seal to contain something other than air, like helium, to reduce air friction. I believe this is fairly common in newer and especially very high capacity hard drives
HDDs are susceptible to damage from even the most minute amount of dust from anything other than a high grade clean environment, the services that do HDD repair and data recovery use either high end clean cabinets or full on clean rooms to disassemble them
3d print the entire case and make it all RGBLED. No, build the entire frame out of RGBLED!!
Given that Fractal has released STL's for a Fractal North Pi case, you could print that and RGB it. Or figure out how to 3d print the full case in the funfeti fil, and RGB the entire case.
Listening to you read periodclots always gets me.
