  • Billy Graham and Dwight Eisenhower found common cause in using faith to campaign against communism - a campaign that made its way into artifacts seen to this day. The phrase “under God” was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954; “In God We Trust” became the nation’s first official motto in 1956, and it was added to paper currency for the first time in 1957.

BILLY GRAHAM explores the life and career of one of the best-known and most influential religious leaders of the 20th century. From modest beginnings on a North Carolina farm, Graham rose to prominence with a fiery preaching style, movie-star good looks and effortless charm. His early fundamentalist sermons harnessed the apocalyptic anxieties of a post-atomic world, exhorting audiences to adopt the only possible solution: devoting one’s life to Christ. Graham became an international celebrity who built a media empire, preached to millions worldwide, and had the ear of tycoons, royalty and presidents. At age 99, he died a national icon, estimated to have preached in person to 210 million people. Billy Graham examines the evangelist’s extraordinary influence on American politics and culture, interweaving the voices of historians, scholars, witnesses, family, and Graham himself, to create a kaleidoscopic portrait of a singular figure in the American experience.

In God we trust was first used on the 1864 two-cent coin, ofc in the video they did say first time on paper currency. It's not like the motto just appeared in the 50s though on our stuff lol

Having it on money. And claiming something to be a national motto. Those are two completely different things. So really what you said is pointless.

America is strong because she is the nation of God. The political and the economic prosperity of America is in God's hands, that's why the motto is In God We Trust. Without God, America is not America anymore.

If there was anything my parents gave me it was the ability to form my own opinions about religion. I'm an atheist because I wasn't brainwashed. And my parents were born in the 1920s.

Approx 2700 people live in my SC town and approx 2699 are Christians. I'm the first and only non believer the overwhelming majority in this town has ever met. I'm only slightly exaggerating why I say I would not be surprised if one day some good God-fearing believer decides to kill me -he would have little to no fear of the police or a jury --- besides he has God on his side. lol
I wish I had the resources to pack up my kiddos and relocate to a different state.

I really didn't know that about how faith became part of American society and how we got "In God We trust" on the dollar bill. This is soon going to be all over with here in America.

Religion should be completely separate of law in our country!

The founding fathers could have created The Christian States of America but they decided not to make that mistake. They understood that favoring any particular belief would eventually divide people... The founders were profoundly aware of how Christians waged religious wars against each other... European religious wars... Changing the national motto violated the Constitution. It ended the country as the founders understood it to be.... it ended the core that united us all... UNITED people - equal people - suddenly all people were no longer equal...suddenly the country favored one belief/group of believers... The United States was established to be a safe place for every human to express any personal thought or private belief openly without fear or the government rewarding or punishing them... everyone was equal whether they believed in a god or gods or no gods at all.
White Christian Nationalism... domestic terrorism... capitol riots... ripple effect....

In "In God we trust.", replace God with Geopolitical Power, and this may help you to understand the massive presence of US military bases across the globe.
