  • With over 500 wineries, scheduling tastings in Napa can be confusing. In this series, I'll introduce you to the top destination wineries (that give you the best and most unique Napa atmosphere and experience) in both Napa and Sonoma counties. In part 1 we first explore the St. Helena and Calistoga region to the north, home of the full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignons. On the docket are Del Dotto Estate Winery and Caves, Sterling Vineyards, and Castello di Amorosa.

Thanks for making this video and all the good advice, especially mentioning that wine quality is not tied to winery showiness. Looking forward to amazing finds at humble, no-nonsense wineries where the focus and investment is in the production and result, as well as checking out wineries with stunning architecture!

I just went to Del Dotto last week! I loved it ...We did the barrel tasting and it was fantastic! The wine is pricey...but delicious!

Very nice and love it! I’ve never visited Napa. After watching your video, I feel so inclined to go there this summer.

It's a fun day trip or weekend trip if you've never been. Go during shoulder season to avoid the crowds.

Loved your video. As a wine enthusiast I feel the need to see Napa, yet with needing to get the covid 19 jab in order to travel( I will not get the jab) I know I wont get the chance to see it. I live near the Okanagan wine belt here in British Columbia so I will make the most of what is literally next door and enjoy a mini version of Napa. Cheers!

I don't know of the Okanagan wine belt but sounds interesting! Washington and Oregon also have some very nice wine regions and they are a closer drive than California. 👍

Personally I prefer group tours - you always meet interesting people and they’ve got interesting perspectives on the 🍷!

I've lived here in Marin County (San Rafael), since the (1970's). I've had over 40 years of wine tasting exposure in Sonoma/Napa. Back in the day, there was no tasting fees, so I was able to get exposed to the many wineries of the region, as well as educate my palate, at no expense. I'm curious what wineries you will recommend?

Yes, it's definitely getting more expensive (and popular) out there.

You went to 3 of the biggest tourist traps in Napa...I am a guide and we NEVER go to these!! Smaller wineries are always a fan favorite, and Sonoma County is a better bang for your buck!

Hi Brigid - thanks for your comments. As most of my viewers are first time tourists to SF, the focus for this series is on "experiential wineries" where there is something more to do than wine tasting - and this video in particular is focused on the St. Helena AVA. From that perspective two of the wineries on this list would end up being popular tourist attractions. For sure wine enthusiasts would do better at some of the smaller wineries. If you have some suggestions on good ones in the area that information is always welcome!
