    As a general rule - Geon should be considered the outlier, not the example. He runs his own factory and obviously have the capacity to drive down prices to a scale that smaller manufacturers can't, hence his pricing.
    It's fair to want prices to go down and to want other vendors to be like Geon, but not realistic.

    As a 40% and SFF enjoyer I feel attacked.
    But in a more serious note, there are sff cases these days that are as easy to build in as atx/matx cases. The sff tax are getting lower as well with Chinese companies with real R and D coming to the market for fans, cases and *some PSU's. Now if any of Intel, AMD or Nvidia are providing more support for ITX boards and power efficient GPU/CPUs I would bet there would be a wider acceptance for sff builds.
    In keyboards however I really like the compactness of 40s as I have become very efficient with layers and I seem to not be bothered by the lack of keys. The portability also adds to the beauty as I can just chuck it in a backpack be on my merry way and continue to work wherever in the comfort of my own layout.

    Your point about unicomp keycaps is a great one. Also the guy who ran the new model F project wanted even better keycaps and designed and had made an even more perfect set thats at least as good as the original 80s IBM keycaps... For like $75.
    Theres no reason abs keycaps that are using existing molds with on hand material using a process that's been running for years need to be $200. It's got to be the difference between paying Chinese wages and German wages.

      Now I do think that listing a 30 unit GB board for like $1600 on mm when there haven’t been any sales for that price is stupid *cough* Rei 60 XT *cough*
      But established boards like keycults will always be expensive unless production ramps up.

  • @aj4123
    @aj4123 Год назад +14

    Great video and I really relate to a lot of your thoughts, however, the part about foam, doesn't that contradict your piece about judging other people's configurations? I agree makers should stop adding foam to everything, but if a hobbyist wants to put foam in their $1,000 keyboard, they should be able to do it without judgment.

    • @darrensyoutube
      @darrensyoutube Год назад +6

      From an enthusiast perspective criticism towards designers is valid when foam is used to compensate for a poorly designed case. Why refine when foam will cover up all the changes you make anyways? Sure, some people like the sound of foam...so give people the option to purchase it as an add-on instead of lumping it into every purchase. It's wasteful and drives up the cost for everybody.
      I agree with your point. There isn't enough respect for other peoples preferences, and people should always be entitled to their preferences. But putting in foam reflects somebody who has more money then sense. Why put in foam into keyboards that are optimized for sound without it? It's a bit of an insult to the board's original design and the painstaking work that went into it. It's like saving up for a Ferrari and then swapping in a Honda Civic engine into it-I mean, all the power to you but like c'mon man.

    • @aj4123
      @aj4123 Год назад

      @@darrensyoutube Yeah, I like the idea of allowing people the option to get it aftermarket and board designs not being created around it, but will never call someone out or ridicule them (not saying blacksimon did, but some people do) for deciding what to put in their boards, even if I have my own, differing, opinions.

    • @Blacksimon
      @Blacksimon  Год назад +16

      foam is fine if a user chooses to foam their board. But when a huge majority of people are installing foam just because its in the kit, we end up leaving so much potential good sound on the table. And while preference is a thing, foam overall just leads to your board sounding like a plastic one anyways, so why even bother spending cash on an alu custom at that point?

    you could call me a non-hobbyist. i type every day, i want to have a good keyboard, but i only want to have one keyboard, i don't like waste or to own unnecessary things. i've had bad experiences with big peripheral companies, that's why i'm here.
    what really bothers me about mechanical keyboards is that once you stray away from the norm there aren't many options, and it's wild to me that nobody wants to have a good 100% keyboard or a southpaw 100% keyboard.
    the names of new switches also really bother me, they are named after foods or animals and the name is not descriptive at all. if i'm not in the hobby 24/7 how am i supposed to know what the heck a Clione Limacina, Jellyfish, or Crystal Robin switch is? this might not be an issue if i have two or three options, but there are hundreds. why did we stray away from the cherry color scheme?
    some people seem to associate RGB with rainbow vomit and treat you like a weirdo when you're looking for per key north facing RGB with nice shine through lettering and somehow people have told themselves that lights do not belong on high end boards. i like tasteful static RGB. yes i know about the clearance issue with north facing switches, but flipping the switches around is probably the worst solution to fix this.

Luckily, only a few though. (Mass)Drop and KBDFans are still on the yellow watch list instead of red watch list.

    Nice talk. I hate 1. group buy. 2. cannot see the real product before put money down. 3. no standards. I don't hate the price, they price whatever they want if people still buy. Of course they will squeeze out every penny from your pocket, but it is profit driven market, all about demand and supply.
    1. group buy, if any product can be delivered under three months, it's ok. Because we are still able to dispute the transaction if shit happens. RAMAWORKS still owe me $1200 products over 20 months, and nobody can solve the problem.
    2. we cannot see and feel the real product before put money down. Every time place an order like gambling, we may receive a product makes us regret.
    3. no standards, in this hobby is all about preferences. Because we cannot touch the real products, so RUclipsr's preferences drives the trends. You buy because it is been told "good".

    Good video. I don’t agree with everything though.
    For example, TX stabs are the best stabilizers I have ever used due to how well they were designed. I get that cheap stabs can be good, but I’d rather buy something that is consistently good for a higher price. Fixing stabs is a headache and I’m not someone who does stuff like holee modding.
    Also, I think expecting people not to list something for market price when selling to a complete stranger is unrealistic. Why should I sell something at cost if I have no guarantee that they won’t just flip on me (this has happened to me before). If designers want their products to have lower aftermarket value, they need to produce more. That’s just how it works, even if it’s harsh.

    Everything you're complaining about on pricing is because of the new vendors/middlemen services that needs their cut, keyboards is their job now so they need to make as much or more money than they previously made on their job
    and also because people are willing to pay the prices, it's normalized
    people actually get mocked when asking "why is X so expensive" in this hobby. Sometimes yes their demands are absurd, sometimes it's really not and yet the small clique of regulars (usually also "friends" with the vendors/artisans/designers or themselves a part of monetizing the hobby) mock them too

      I dont know about that, look at geon's work, look at wuque studio with the $180 zoom tkl with pvd steel weights.
      Its been proven that you don't need to charge and arm and a leg in order to make money. I just wish more people thought like this

      @@Blacksimon Do you think it's a coincidence that the studios you've mentioned aren't NA-based?

      @@Blacksimonwdym proven? They could get away with that because Geon produces his own stuff in house. You just assume people don't charge less because it's some conspiracy to make money but they have to charge more to pay for labour and have cash in hand for future projects.

    No matter what your niche is, normies are always cancer. Do your best to discourage them. Anybody who actually cares will get into it anyway.

    Simone showing boomer mindset hard with the stab comments lol. TX stabs are 1000% worth their price. I used only cherry clip ins for years but never again. Having one bad experience shouldn’t be enough to rant about how terrible something is on the internet.

      Tx are good, which is why I didn't call them out. I'd suggest em to anyone building with a thin pcb.
      However in a normal 1.6mm pcb, may as well save a few bucks
