    DO BIKE HELMETS EXPIRE??? There really isn't a clear answer on this. So, I did a little bit of research and this is what I found.

    Ty, this is called Planned Obsolescence. That, combined with marketing and the desire to drive new/more sales would push the timeline to the short period. Style and design as well as “fashion” drive this motivation as well.

    Thanks so much for the video!
    As a kid, a french teacher told us that his bike helmet can expired (after 5 years) and someone told him to replace it before a very unfortunate bike injury. As he did got himself injured and thank the gods that he wasn't too hurt...
    About a decade later. I got myself a E-scooter (Apollo city pro.) The top speed it's up to 32mph/50 kmph. It's one hella fun adult toy.
    Since I was a kid, I learned the value of safety and health. My first scooter was a Segway max, it have a top speed of 32kmph/19mph. After my first "crushed." More like a tip over of under 5 kmph/2-3mph. I vow myself to invest 2/3 the same amount of cost to my safety gear( at the time, I was only wearing a normal bike helmet). Got myself 6.5 leatt chest protector, 6.5 leatt elbow, leatt dual axe knee guild, leatt 7.5 moto helmet with 6.5 goggles/4.5 goggles. (one time, my peers and I ride under a bridge that it was very sandy, and got sand in my eyes, it hurt like.... A lot...).
    About the leatt moto 7.5 helmet. It's meant for the high speed. But it's so hot during the summer. Although I travel a mid speed. It cools down. And a bit too heavy. Therefore I invested a new helmet with more vents. As you can now see a particular pattern. I got myself 2021 leatt gravity 4.0. it's far lighter and should be more air going into my face. My leatt 7.5 helmet it's still good. Hadn't gone into any accidents yet. So it can be use during night ride whenever it's cold outside.
    Before keeping the new helmet, I do a very deep inspection check. Everything it's correct. I did got it on a 25% sale from the original value price. So the date it's made in Dec 2021.
    Now I'll remember that UV light will also effect the helmet. That's new information. I deeply appreciate the help.

    Finally, an objective scientific test, vs. pure conjecture. I trust the impact test and NOT the speculation of degradation. Thanks for posting.

    3-5 year replacement from manufacture is a) covering their butt and b) more money from sales for them.

    I use my older helmet for trips to the store and what not because I won't care if it gets stolen. I use my new helmet for long rides.

      Makes sense. I thought this was interesting because there is so much grey area and not really a solid answer. Just recommendations on when it's time to replace.

    I replace my helmets generally about every 3 years. Which reminds me it's time to replace both of my helmets. It just seems wise to do that. When I broke my clavicle to four pieces, the helmet definitely preventing me from being more seriously injured as there was a burn mark on the side of the helmet.

      Yes! I agree. You have one brain. I believe both of my helmets either saved my life and or kept me from suffering serious brain damage.

    • @TysRides
      @TysRides  Год назад +1

      @lexington476 100%. I don't want it to look like I'm saying you shouldn't replace it when you want. That is a personal decision. I get it! I just wanted to show the findings from the studies that have been done. Snell is a non-profit. They recommend every 5 years. But some helmet manufacturers say as little as two years. That seems a bit extreme to me. There is just so much grey area on the subject and not a clear answer.

    It’s a marketing ploy to generate residual income.

      Could be! I think replacing every three years is a bit extreme.

    The helmets the bike shop owner was destroying might have been in the shop window collecting UV for the whole summer.
    Or maybe they've been superseded and they can't sell them so they're just taking up space in the stock room. A less scrupulous retailer (or distributor or manufacturer) might think giving them away is a lost sale.

    • @TysRides
      @TysRides  Год назад

      The shop that was smashing them does things very by the book. If they were smashing them, there was a good reason. I'm thinking they were probably used, but if they weren't, they were probably just old and maybe there is some type of liability if they were to give them away and someone were to get injured. Either way, it opened my eyes to this topic. I honestly had no idea helmets expire. I knew helmets needed replacing after a crash but didn't realize they had a lifespan once you start using them.
