Building a Sculpted Rocking Moose

- Building a Maloof inspired sculpted rocking moose out of walnut, maple, and wenge.
This video is a bit on the long side, here's a guide if you'd like to skip to a certain step:

The rockers are bent laminated using ~ 1/8" strips of walnut, each including a strip of maple and wenge (as sort of a nod to Mark from The Wood Whisperer who did the same on his sculpted rocker). There were definitely a lot of firsts in this project which made it drag on for a while. Though, from designing and building templates to building the lamination form to sculpting everything I'm very pleased with the outcome. It pretty much came out exactly as pictured in my head which is always a great feeling :)

I love how you have turned a child’s toy into a delightful piece of art! The beautiful simplicity of what you made belies its complexity as well as the skill it required to design and create this piece. Hence, my questions:
- What, if anything, might you do differently from a design or construction standpoint?
- What are the rough dimensions of of moose template?
- What are the raw dimensions of the rocker strips as they are being bent? Are they 1/8” finished thickness?
- What are the antler dimensions? To what diameter are the antler handles turned?
- Where did you source the pattern for the bent lamination curve? Do you know if its based on a 42 1/4” circle? How long is your bent lamination jig?
- Did you cut the legs to fit the moose body on the bandsaw at 13.1 degrees, or some other measurement?
- Any recommendation on the best rasp brands and models?
- What was your method of locating the exact position of the moose on the rockers? I am assuming that position provides maximum and safe rocking forwards and backwards.

A rocking moose to get excited about! All the rest out there look like they are based on Bullwinkle... Did you have any luck scanning your templates? If not, a couple of basic dimensions would make sure I get started on the right track. Could you provide the length and radius of the rockers and the height at the shoulder? Beautiful work!

What a great video. My mother-inlaw has moose all over her house. I think my toddler and her would just love it. Do you have plans for this?
Thanks Chad! Unfortunately I do not have plans for this. I drew it out on very thin paper so I could trace over the original to get different templates if the whole moose. I tried to have these scanned and it did not end well for the paper.
I've watched this video a number of times over the past month and love what I see. Just a fast query. What is the glue you used on the leg joints. Was it a form of epoxy?
Thanks Tom! I used West System epoxy for the leg joints, it makes it rock solid. With the grain orientation and epoxy it’s strong enough for me to ride this bad boy 👍
Question, was there any particular reason you glued up the body way you did? I'm thinking it would be easier to glue straight boards together and then cut the template out, looks like maybe you did it because of the grain pattern?
Yes it was done for grain direction to give the legs strength. Not as critical for the body as it is the legs but wanted the body to match the legs so there was as little a contrast as possible between the inside body and the leg pieces.

Thanks! Off the top of my head I want to say about 30bf of 8/4 walnut and a couple board feet of 8/4 maple for the antlers. Let me know when you build one, I’d love to see the final piece!

I’d like to scan the draw plans but the paper is very thin and long. I just need to get to a fed ex store and ask them if it’s possible. Some day soon..
