I'd like to add, you've done a beautiful job, I only wanted to offer my advice because 1. It works, and 2. So many hobbyists, beginners even are inspired to make Rocky for their children/grandchildren, the plans make it look/sound so simple, and you've got a bunch of amateurs clutching highly powered (dangerous) tools, and I'd bet many a half finished Rocky collecting cobwebs in the back of garages because of injured fingers.
A couple of years ago I was in New Zealand and went to visit one of the big Kari Furniture and carving places got talking to the manager and he states that he only uses the cutting wheel of a Ryobi biscuit joiner in his grinder for this type of power carving.(His Carving are huge) You will have to make up an adapter for it to fit the shaft of your grinder (The exact same one I purchased from Arbotech sells works fine but it can be made up from from cutting board material on a lathe.) It has six carbide teeth have been using it for a number of years and I still have all of my fingers. At the time.
Excellent work - though I'll be getting an arbortech turbo plane - expensive yes, but would appear to be a lot safer (hope you fully healed up without issue)
Hi Russell, I got the plans for a large Rocky (plan 140) just after christmas and going to get the wood tomorrow. I have bought a Kutzall Original Shaping Dish - Fine, 4-1/2" for the carving with the angle grinder. I also have a power file as well. The video looks to be quite helpful. I have got carbon paper and plan to use a piece of dowel to trace on to the hardboard (so as not to draw over the plan lines) to then use those to draw around onto the 18mm ply. Any tips ?
