      Lol.. I have just watched it again, and I don't know how it is wrong.. I was really drunk when I wrote that comment so maby I'm just too sober to notice it now 🤣😂,
      maby i just said it because it's not how I learned it..
      We will never know..
      In all honesty, I know for sure I play it wrong on my video for my dad, cus I use a pick.. but it still sounds good..
      This guy is probably doing it correctly, I should be ignored when I'm that drunk.. 😂🤣
      Although, I think that people should learn to have more fun with songs rather than just playing them straight. Mix it up a bit..
      But that's just me.. 👍👍

    This is the riff I wanted to learn when I picked up the guitar 4 years ago. Of course, there was no way I could do it back then. Since then, every few months I've been coming back to this video to see if I'd have the patience to get it down. And yesterday I finally did it..
    This is probably the only tutorial on YT that covers all of Knopfler's nuances. Thank you :)

    I was dying, literally dying to play this riff correctly, for a while.. I have seen many covers, many lessons, many tutorials. But there was something missing, always as I played it, it felt like something is off, missing,.. And by grace of God , I came to your video..
    And lo and behold, it opened up like a pandora box.
    It took me 2 days to figure it out, 100% accurately as you instructed..
    And i am really feeling it now.
    It's very very different.
    The beat is pumping in me, and i dont feel like playing notes now.. I really feel that i am playing alive music that is throbbing. Thank you very much. This means a lot to me. A lot.
    I knew that Mark plays fingerstyle in his own way.
    Not only a good song, a killer riff, with killer tone, but also adds one more technical ability to guitar players (as you learn to play fingerstyle).
    You put in the work and i appreciate it so much. Much love and light to you , man.

    Tremendous success in unraveling the playing of this wonderful hit. Great job. Thanks for the post. Like many of his songs, this sounds fantastic on one accoustic guitar, almost as much as the full production. Like many of his songs, it sounds more simple and clear than it actually is. This video makes it possible for me to seriously attempt it on my own. Thanks so much.

    I got half of the riff right by watching Mark Knopfler because NOONE on youtube plays it right, not even remotely.
    There's a video asking why everyone plays this riff wrong, just to also play it *completely* wrong...
    You are the only one that gets it right. Finally can learn the second part of the riff. Thank you so much for this! If you had an electric at least as a thumbnail, I would have clicked this video half a year ago...

    Awesome work. I thought I was pretty good at that picking/rhythm pattern Mark uses in a lot of his songs, but It still took a few hours of practice for this song to click into place.
    I've found that a lot of his riffs make so much more sense once you figure out the picking pattern that frames the whole thing. Even the fast bit at the end of Sultans of Swing is just a weird Travis pattern crammed onto 2 fingers and 2 strings. It wasn't too difficult once I understood what was going on, but it took hours of slowing down concert footage to finally figure it out. Mark is a master for coming up with this stuff.

    Such a good video. Also a phenomenal demonstration of that old saying that most of the tone is in the fingers; these videos illustrate just how much of Mark's sound is down to his right hand technique and unusual approach to picking and muting. Really useful resource, thank you.

      Best introduction to the details in fingerstyle for this tune. I'm a jazz pianist and organist, but after thirty years I'm working back on an archtop hollow body to play jazz à la Wes, Tal, Grant, everybody.
      But working in warehouse logistics, this tune speaks to me, so I had to learn it. Mostly because the main hook/riff is so badass.
      I learned more from this video than anything besides the original recording.

    I was in a band that covered this song for quite a while. I played a bar-passable version of this. However, watching this video, I can see I was doing it about 15% correct. I only say that because most of my left hand action was correct. My right hand was doing almost nothing correct. I'm glad there were no purists around to call me out. Lol. Knopfler is very hard to play and one of the inaccessible guitarist even if he looks easier at the first sight, you can notice that’s few succeeded to mimic his play but I’ve never heard and seen someone who replicated his way of playing like you do ! In all your videos., money for nothing for instance, I’ve heard it from thousands .. and I always felt that it’s a simplified version till yours, at the moment you started .. I was like ..! Wow !! Here’s the original inch for inch.
    it might be easy and comfortable for you but believe me it’s hard and demande a lot of adaptation from a traditional guitar playing ..
    thanks for all your tutorials I believe that even Mark would be impressed of how you can play his songs that close to his techniques ! by the way I learned a lot of useful stuffs for my own music from you, that I needed to understand as I noticed them in Knopfler’s music before, but I wasn’t capable to reproduce.

    Amazing!! And another mystery solved lol. As usual you nailed it, while also covering perfectly the technique and the details that all the other lessons miss. Superb as always Pavel!! And a big thank you for posting this!!

      Thank you Anish! There was some flukes on the recording, one of which I described in the pinned comment here (I let go one note too early), but overall I'm pretty happy with this. The other guy here on RUclips played it almost spot on, but his lesson is in Portuguese and 42 minutes long, so I'll save someone's time for sure, haha! Thank you as always.

    pavel you are the man. i think its the only video that see someone play and sing that song..so hard..

    • @PavelFomenkov
      @PavelFomenkov  5 лет назад

      Yeah, usually it’s the riff everyone’s playing. But it’s a song... Thanks for seeing the difference!

    Great Video and great chunking on the teaching part. You make the song rly approachable.
    Without having it mastered, but after watching some tutorials on RUclips on it, I also think that the natural harmonics are a byproduct of playing, and tabbing them out as mandatory is kind of an overmystification.
    Great insights, thx a lot!
    Subbed the first time I saw your work, you rly do sth special here.

      there are many youtube-teachers who teach this song completly wrong. they go the easy-route. but this song is far more difficult when played correct. thanks pavel...

    Thanks! Finally I able to play this riff correctly. I would like to see more Dire Straits in your channel, Like Southbound Again, Down to the waterline and etc.

      My inspiration is completely random. It could be a 1978 DS song, a 2024 MK song or anything in between. I'm really happy this very short video helped you to understand this riff better.

    Хотел уже было строчить на английском, но вовремя название канала посмотрел. :D Сайт -- просто бомба, очень удобная штука. А сколько там песен разобрано -- закачаешься. О проделанной работе только "massive" и можно сказать. Очень здорово, прям аж глаза разбегаются.

      Напомнило мне времена, когда я писал в поддержку Ultimate Guitar, а они увидели, что я из Санкт-Петербурга и ответили, что они из Калининграда - можно по-русски писать :) Спасибо большое вам.

    Finally someone who knows Marks technique and plays it JUST RIGHT. Great job.

    • @PavelFomenkov
      @PavelFomenkov  5 лет назад

      I'd say I'm close to "understand" it, because the only man who knows it by heart is MK himself, but I try my best to get the essence of his playing and playing electric guitar riffs and any one of his songs on an acoustic guitar not only saves me money and time, but shows that it's never about gear. With Mark Knopfler at least it's never about gear.

    • @azzuro195
      @azzuro195 5 лет назад

      Couldn't agre more. MK is a damn good fingerstyle guitarsit playin electric guitar but the roots are definitely acoustic (folk era playing on national guitar). Being my raw model for whole life

    Exceedingly more then I thought it would be .
    I play with a mountain thumb pick but I don't see that getting in the way
