The best digital full frame camera for me is the 5D classic, especially for adapting old lenses. The colors and the depth of the huge pixels is just something else.
I agree, I still use mine a lot, even though I got a 6D on a trade-in deal. I have a Pentax f4 50mm Macro lens on it. Big, fat pixels which allow a lot of post-processing. It has a unique feel, compared with newer, high pixel-density DSLRs. Used it for work a lot too. Also nice with the original Canon 24-70L f2.8 lens on it - a real workhorse lens. Great starter camera for students too.
I would not recommend any DSLR for vintage lenses, unless oem like Nikon. For example the 5D was capable of some vintage lenses, but many would either lose infinity focus, or they would end up hitting the mirror or needed some modification (apart from the adapter). Next focus, no live view on the original 5D or cameras of that generation. The standard viewfinder was not optimized for manual focus. Now if you look at the early generation mirrorless, like the Sony a7 you don’t have any of these problems. Find the adapter, live view, focus peaking or some other focus confirmation, infinity no issue, no mods required. So mirrorless all the way for vintage. Exception maybe those OEM solutions like Nikon F mount bodies - love to use my D700/800 with AIS lenses.
Thanks but where are you finding these cameras that cheap? £100 is $117 US, the GH2 and A7 are way more than that on Ebay,. Around $300 for the cheapest GH2 and $500 for the A7.
Great video! I bought some weeks ago an Olympus OM-D E-M5 body for just 90 Euros. I'm very happy with this camera, 16MP, IBIS, very good AF, even eye-detection works very well. The lenses are very cheap, I bought a Panasonic 1.7 25mm lens (new) for 130 Euros, a Sigma 60mm 2.8 (used) for just 85 Euros.
The Sigma is good isn't it, the flop flop of the focusing element powered off is a bit disconcerting tho :-) ( its a linear motor rather that a rotary you see).
Another Zen-Sunday is upon us! A lovely little insightful video, thank you Nigel. If full frame isn’t needed, then the X-pro 1 is my tool of choice. I love the sensor output coupled with vintage glass. It’s good news that all these little gems are now becoming much cheaper.
Another excellent video. I am planning getting my first mirror less camera in the next few months and found this very informative. As I commented on another of your videos I still have the majority of the lenses that I have bought over the last 50 years, I have never counted them but must have over a hundred. You have actually tested several of the lenses that I have but have loads that you haven’t. Olympus 21mm, 90mm macro and 500mm mirror are among my favourites.
Been shooting many cameras for the last couple of years. For photos, the original A7 is at the top of my list, especially if you take into account its bargain price. Lovely image quality and the focus peaking is pure gold for use with vintage lenses.
The little " GH 2 " is a gem !! I LOVE the color science and the " vintage " feel of the images , especially with vintage lenses ! One of my favorites for landscapes .

I don't find the battery life to be an issue on the A7. Yes there are many cameras with longer battery life, but taking out a couple of extra batteries is much the same as taking out a couple of rolls of 35mm film. We've definitely been spoilt by modern cameras, imagine a company releasing a camera, that could only take 36 frames before you had to swap the battery. The other advantage for me is the same battery fits my NEX7 and my full spectrum NEX3. Cheers for taking the time to produce the content.
I agree with your comment regarding battery life on the Sonys. I've had an a6000 since 2016 and just recently bought a new A7II. For the type of shooting I do, I don't find the FW50 to be much of a problem. These batteries are cheap to buy and easy to carry with you. The fact that the A7II uses the same battery as my a6000 was actually an advantage for the A7II over the A7III which has the new Z type battery. I already have 3 of them and now have 4. I keep two fully charged and ready for whichever camera needs a fresh one.

Great channel, I think you would love the GF1 if not already tried it. Made in Japan from solid metal and a great shutter sound. Not to mention "dynamic" black and white. My fave camera and I've had several hundred over the years.
Again another great video. I managed to purchase an Olympus em 10 Mk ii body for £155 a few months ago and it’s great for using vintage lenses. It has focus peaking and magnify capability which is really usefull. You can also change the focal length of the lens to take advantage of the in camera stabilisation to get sharp image results. A really cheap entry camera is the lumix GF1 it has great features for anyone learning and can be purchased for under £50
I also shoot em10 mkII. Yes it’s great for adapting old lenses. I also have Olympus lenses. I now use DXO Photolab to process and the sharpness and detail you get from even the kit lens is amazing. You can’t get that with Lightroom. I love the EM10 also because it automatically shakes dust off the sensor so you don’t have to clean your images in the editor.

I totally agree, I have an EM-10 Mark II and I love it. Very good M4/3 to use with vintage lenses. I use russian lenses and Canon FDs, maybe a Minolta Rokkor 58mm f/1.4 soon.
Must be. A hundred pounds is $130. I've seen A7s for cheap but not that cheap. Ohhh- _from_ a hundred pounds. Anyway yeah I got one and it's got a Jupiter 9 on it right now.
It has the best peaking of any camera I've used - very prominent and visible - which I think is a result of its full frame sensor. Peaking on the a6000, for example, is weaker.
@@zenography7923 Agreed. Also, I like the zoom-in function (which I have assigned to the "C1" button), as it allows you to quickly zoom into any part of the image that you choose and to really nail the focussing.
With Olympus E-PL5 i've set up one of the top buttons for ISO setting and it's just perfect now. I can all of the main settings (shutter, aperture, ISO) without going to any menu! The lack of focus peaking can be a problem if you have manual lens but it's not a big deal since you still can zoom in. Yeah it's slower but still gets job done. I love using it with TTArtisan 25 f2 and Helios 44M-4. It is my first mirrorless camera and I wanted to sell it a year ago but now I don't think i'll do that anytime soon.
Instead of the Olympus PEN E-PL5, for essentially the same price or maybe $50-$75 more, you can pick up the PEN E-P5 which is essentially an OMD-M5 in a slightly smaller body. It has no built-in viewfinder, but the VF-4 EVF is also available to slide into the hot shoe just like on the E-PL5. THE E-P5 has a magnesium alloy body, front and rear control wheels, focus peeking, 5-axis IBIS, a small built in flash, etc, etc, Great little camera with 16 megapixel m4/3 sensor. I picked one up in true mint condition with the EZ 14-42mm kit lens for $265 about 2 years ago, and I find myself grabbing it all the time instead of my Nikon DSLR simply because it's so small, easy to carry and takes very beautiful images.
I too have to add my old Fuji X-E1 to the list (for stills), it's dirt cheap by now, but the sensor and picture quality are still absolutely great. And of course Fuji's vintage style with manual controls fits vintage lenses perfectly, both ergonomically and just looks-wise, film simulations add to the retro feeling. Also paired it with a Lens Turbo focal reducer to get most out of the lenses, which I'd absolutely recommend to everyone moaning the crop factor. :)

Let me recommend adding the Fujifilm X-E1 to this list. If you're into "rangefinder" and "classic" you simply have to look into this one. The Fuji X-E1 is commonly available for under £150 on the auction site.
You said that because the sensor of the Lumix GH2 is so small it uses the centre of the lens. I can see this being a distinct advatage if your vinatage lens is soft at the edges, especially if the lens is cheap to reflect that fact, bargain! Do any other zenographers know of the existence of a speed booster (reducer) that would make lenses even more versatile for a GH2? To paraphrase one of your other reviews Mr Zenography, "this is a lovely little review." Thank you.
I have been thinking the same for quite some time. However, I recently came across comments that some prominant lens adapters may not fit well/snugly. I have not explored this myself, but apparently the a7ll does not have the wiggle.

For my A7ii and to mitigate the battery issue, I have a Neewer grip that racks it up to two batteries. And I like the added buttons and comfort when shooting portrait mode and just the added heft too. Gosh, now I just want to go shoot some more with it. I like your videos, you don't just get technical with lenses; it's great to have your comments on a lense's character and color rendition.
I'm much more interested in the aesthetic qualities of a lens, rather than very technical matters - after all, most of us don't usually photograph test charts!
2 tricks for the E-PL5: you can flip the screen up to face you instead of sideways, which is about the same. Second, find a way to activate the super control panel in the menu, which, for a reason no o è u derstand is disabled. Once you've done that, clicking the center of the direction pad will bring it up. Pressing the info button will togle between the old menu and the new one. Becaause the camera has only the rear wheel around the direction pad, the super menu it is convenient because it allows you to select the value you want to change in a very direct way and modify it with the wheel. I bought a panny gf3 3 years back £75 used it a bit then used it less and less dug it out last month to do a shoot with and boy did it impress, it impressed me so much I bought a gf7 used £100-00 and dear lord above it that camera damn good. Great idea and concept but make no sense when a big lens fitted. Going to try the gf7 at a wedding and looking forward to a day of shooting with no bad back!
One year ago I got a nearly mint Sony NEX-7 for 200 € and a Sony A7 with only 4000 shutter releases for 450€. Both cameras are fantastic due to their small form factor and weight and their high resolution of 24 MB. I purchased them with a mountain of batteries but I rarely empty one battery when I am strolling around to make still pictures. Especially the Sony A7 is a great companion for vintage lenses. But the NEX-7 has also its qualities (e.g. less issues with the corner sharpness of vintage lenses), especially when you consider the affordable price.
I’ve been thinking of an older mirrorless for photography and videography. A do love my OM gear so a new gen Pen might be perfect (I even have an old Pen F in my collection!).
If you want to pick up a really good mirrorless body for a reasonable price, take a look at the Olympus E-M1 cameras on eBay. I'm going to pick up a second body fairly soon as a backup camera. You can pick up one in excellent condition (near mint) for AUS$400-500. So, you're looking at 180-220 pounds, maybe a little more. I love mine and that's why I'll be getting a second one :D
I once rented a Sony A7II and did not like it. The colors were really lackluster (using darktable for RAW). So I decided to get the Olympus PenF instead. It is awesome. The colors are gorgeous. The images I get out of it look so much nicer than the A7ii I rented, and the image stabilization is very good. And it is very beautiful. I got it for less the price than an A7I.
If you could recommend a vintage 20-28mm prime under $100, which would it be? I recently picked up a Sony A6000 and you got me interested in these old tanks of lenses.
There are lots - ones I particularly like are the Canon fd 28mm f3.5, Olympus 28mm f3.5 and f2.8 versions, Pentax (K Mount version) 28mm f3.5, to name but a few!
Great video. Before I bought my full-frame A7ii, I used vintage lenses on my Sony NEX-5R with a speed booster (focal reducer) to get close to a full-frame.
@@simonhodges6084 I own an X-T2, X-T20, and X100T. Build quality on the X-T20 is quite terrible, but still, for the price I paid for it, it has done really well for a small, lightweight camera.
My first mirrorless camera is the GH2. I still have it and used it as a second camera on a trip to England last year. Glad I was as my main camera was a GX7 which developed sensor trouble. But I can also recommend the Lumix GX7 which I replaced with a factory reconditioned GX9 when the latter turned out to be unrepairable. I recently picked up a factory refurbished Olympus Pen E-PL 8. Like the PL 5 you showed, this a very nice camera . I did a comparison of the PL8, 9, and the new PL 10 at DPReview.com and found that on all the truly significant specs they were virtually identical. A few extra bells and whistles, but nothing I cared about that was available in the Lumix’s I have. Nice little camera, light and easy to use. So, I’d add these to your list. Because I have been purchasing vintage lenses (many from your recommendations) I’m considering the Sony A7 body you showed to use with them, so I was interested in your recommendation. Thanks. I have x4 Canon EOS M cameras (the original 2013), Canon's first mirrorless. They seem pretty great and can be hacked also. I have nothing to compare them to, though. The only downsides is no flip or tilt screen, video autofocus is unusable, and battery life sucks.
@@HS-eq3gk Well its Canon APS-C so there is a 1.6x crop compared to full frame. So if you want an 80mm lens for portraits lets say, you need a 50mm since 50x1.6 = 80. So just decide first what focal length(s) you want for full frame equivalent. Zenographry has tons of great vintage lens videos here on his channel. You just pick what you like and can afford and get the adapter needed for EOS M. They will all need an adapter since your mount is EF-M. One cool interesting lens is a 24mm f/2.8 Pentax-110, it is the smallest lens I have ever seen. Not an amazing lens just interesting to have and cheap. There is 2 adapters for Pentax-110 to EF-M. One is like $18 and the other is $50+. If you want amazing video options, install Magic Lantern on the SD Card.

Your channel is great! Based on few videos i watched, i understood that if we have a Nikon AI or AIS lens mounted via a speedbooster (like Viltrox NF-M43X) to the Panasonic GH5, we will be able to read the aperture change in the viewfinder. Can you confirm this? Thanks for your help!!!
Well, the a7r has rather higher definition, but the 24 megs of the a7 is more than enough for my needs. I think the a7r has a metal front plate too, rather than the a7's plastic one, but that's never troubled me either! The a7 sensor is easily equal to resolving the sharpest vintage lenses, while many vintage lenses are a bit soft anyway... All things considered I think the a7 is more than up to the job, and I can't see the a7r giving any real advantage.
I got into vintage lenses recently and decided to buy a used Sony A7ii camera for them. It cost me $700US on eBay. I think the A7ii is worth the extra money because it has IBIS (not on the A7). The best camera feature to have with manual lenses is Focus Magnification. I find that it is much more accurate than Focus Peaking.
It's more accurate and I've used it from time to time but to be honest I find it a bit fiddly to use, and not easy to track a moving subject. Peaking and magnification are both useful, but I think this is an area where there's room for development in mirrorless cameras.
I had feared that the A7 wasn’t conducive to adapted lenses because of the myriad of menu options but you’ve dispelled that (great!). As for the EPL5, I wouldn’t recommend that, mine fell apart, it a bit annoying when your shutter button falls off! I would record the EP5, surely not much more expensive than the EPL5. Btw you didn’t mention image stabilisation on any of these cameras, which is a good thing👍🏽. Too much dependency on that these days.
Barleybreakingeven Sorry mate I’m the other side of the coin the Pen Ep5 brilliant camera not had any problems in 4yrs of use. The beauty of the Ep5 it does have focus peaking which the Epl5 doesn’t.
I’ve had several Olympus cameras, and they do tend to fall apart. Also my repair tech won’t touch them. Never a problem with multiple Panasonic bodies.
As a a7s user, battery was half hour at best, got a dummy battery to usb (with built in voltage booster) made a holder that goes to the tripod mount to hold usb power bank. There was no way I was going to use any battery grip that uses the same terrible batteries. Now it can be used for several hours on several days without any thought to charging anything. It's now grab and go. It is really fussy about memory cards, some trial and error to find a card that unlocked all video modes, and didn't give sporadic card read error. Video resolution goes from ye olde Avi straight to different flavours of 1080 and some exotics , no 720 at 30 FPS my preferred format can do 720 at a 100 FPS which doesn't help file size or editing times. It's not very Intuitive or ergonomic like a canon. Had to Google to find some setting and functions on the fly after not being able to find them in the convoluted menu. Images are either very processed or noisy. Being a Sony and not water resistant I dare not sweat if in the same room as it. It feels easy to break bits off and all those wheels that could go rogue with a bit of grit. Love the look of it very charming ,reminds me of my zenit EM and KM with all its issues listed above, also love the high iso(reason I chose it), the FF sensor with the 18mm flange distance , all the adapters to fit lenses from kiev60 to pentax110 , (reason I use it) I can moan about the camera untill I'm ready to drop another grand , I prefer Fujifilm colours but I'm not going smaller sensor.
It's a case of apples and oranges - they're different in approach and philosophy. I do love the Fuji cameras, but if I had to choose between these I'd take the Sony.
I picked up a Panasonic GF2 12mpix and an Olympus 14-42 lens for about $110 USD for video recording. What I found very nice is that with an 8mm Rokinon fisheye the distortion is greatly reduced providing me a very wide point and shoot camera. I also purchased the camera for adapting some M42 lenses I heard very good things about from you and others. Thanks for the good recommendations.
I have one also used. It's really great and the focus peaking is excellent most of the times. In low light it sometimes falls flat, especially when using ND or Color Filters
I hate Panasonic colors before the G7. So it's raw only. Even the GH4 was horrible for colors for video. Olympus colors are way nicer but they lack viewfinders except for expensive Pen F. The G7 is the best camera imo by Panasonic as it was so cheap on sale, ultra lightweight, but all the benefits of a body like the GH line. The fairly expensive GM5 was good for raw photos with its pocketable size and it was great with small lenses like the Pentax Cosmicar 25mm f1.4 and Olympus 9mm f8 fisheye bodycap. I may pick up an Olympus like the one in this video one day for those lenses and the Sigma 60mm f2.8.
@@zenography7923 I think Panasonic have much improved and by the time they started full frame I would say their colors on M43 were good. Very realistic. The G7 release after the GH4 was when I changed to saying they are now acceptable. But they are just realistic, not actually pleasing like I saw on Ricoh and Fujifilm (looks like Olympus is naturally more pleasing too). Although it could be argued those are less realistic. I prefer a more pleasing surreal look that the likes of Fuji and Ricoh offer in their film simulations. e.g. Fujifilm's Classic Negative is lovely and the main reason I will buy a new one next year.
Great video! If I may also throw out another recommendation. The Sony Nex series. It's a super underated apsc bodies that were over shadowed by the Sony 6xxxx. Their about 80-100 body only.

Correction, the crop factor of m4/3 sensors is~2, but the sensor size itself (area) is actually less than 1/4 the size of full frame. Edit. I was wrong, m43 sensor isn't less than 1/4 the size of FF, its 0.2815 the size of FF. so slightly above 0.25. :)
He is correct, the MFT sensor is roughly half the size of a FF sensor. FF sensor is about 4 times the area but reduce it by 50% or by half and it’s roughly the same size as an MFT sensor. Bear in mind the different aspect ratios 3:2 vs 4:3 and scaling up or down is never going to exactly match.
@@alexreay4164 thank you for agreeing that it's approx 1/4 the size (in area) of a FF sensor. Many ppl I know can't even believe that an APSC sensor is less than half the size of full frame. Anyway, when i say size, i mean area. so thank you :)

Small modern sensors are amazing and MFT (Olympus) is my format of choice for professional work because of the superb colour repro, lens quality (edge to edge sharpness), build quality, weather sealing, reliability and overall light weight of the system.
Any plans to upgrade to something like the lumix s5 for your next camera? Since it has a stunning fullframe sensor, great ibis, much better lowlight performance and dynamic range, better colors, incredible 10bit 4k video with great log options. and much better focus peaking then your a7, it sounds like the perfect upgrade, not to mention it's battery life is much better as well, with options to power it with a PD battery bank.
Hi! I think Sony brand is a good camera. But there native lenses are very expensive, because they are (Leica) German lenses. I think when you buy a Camera, you are also buying a modular system . Therefore, you would be using a lot of adaptors, to accept other lenses. In my opinion, I rather settle from a reputation camera maker Nikon, Canon, Fuji etc, in creating your own camera system. In my case I choose Nikon, way back in 1980, when I started my love for the art of photography. Camera is a tool to make our photographic art expression. Photography (beauty), is on the eyes of the beholder. In my humble opinion only. Thank you, & God bless.

You're right, the lens doesn't change, but because of the smaller sensor, which 'looks' through a more central portion of the lens, it gives the same field of view as a 70mm lens on full frame.
I think mirrorless are getting bigger and heftier to replicate DSLRs which is a great idea, but the fact that all of them are is certainly questionable.
My only problem with the tilt screen is that, when shooting video, you can't see what you're shooting if you're in front of the camera! No problem with stills though...
Good video: it is so true one doesn't need the latest gear to take great photos, and there's fun to be had in using older cameras and lenses. But, dear god, please don't wish for flippy screens on all cameras. They are obviously a boon for vloggers, but as I have no need to photograph or video myself (if you saw me you'd know why!), they do not suit my style of photography at all. They don't play well with L Brackets, and I don't want a screen hanging off the side of the camera. For my purposes, the screen on some Fujis are the best solution, as the tilt in both portrait and landscape orientation.
"GH2 will take pretty much any lens ever made"....that is older than GH2. Newer mirrorless lenses (Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF mounts) CANNOT be used even with adapters.
@@sidekickbob7227 I am aware of this, just thought adding a bit of precision to the narrative won't hurt. :) You never know who might watch, and if they decide to buy some mirrorless lens (like 50 mm f/1.8 OSS E-mount, which can be found pretty cheap) to use on their vintage GH2, they will be in for a nasty surprise.

Another excellent video. I am planning getting my first mirror less camera in the next few months and found this very informative. As I commented on another of your videos I still have the majority of the lenses that I have bought over the last 50 years, I have never counted them but must have over a hundred. You have actually tested several of the lenses that I have but have loads that you haven’t. Olympus 21mm, 90mm macro and 500mm mirror are among my favourites.
Been shooting many cameras for the last couple of years. For photos, the original A7 is at the top of my list, especially if you take into account its bargain price. Lovely image quality and the focus peaking is pure gold for use with vintage lenses.
It's very hard to beat, for stills at least!
The little " GH 2 " is a gem !! I LOVE the color science and the " vintage " feel of the images , especially with vintage lenses ! One of my favorites for landscapes .

I don't find the battery life to be an issue on the A7. Yes there are many cameras with longer battery life, but taking out a couple of extra batteries is much the same as taking out a couple of rolls of 35mm film. We've definitely been spoilt by modern cameras, imagine a company releasing a camera, that could only take 36 frames before you had to swap the battery. The other advantage for me is the same battery fits my NEX7 and my full spectrum NEX3. Cheers for taking the time to produce the content.
A Battery grip is a good investment, had mine on several trips and never had to bring spares
I agree with your comment regarding battery life on the Sonys. I've had an a6000 since 2016 and just recently bought a new A7II. For the type of shooting I do, I don't find the FW50 to be much of a problem. These batteries are cheap to buy and easy to carry with you. The fact that the A7II uses the same battery as my a6000 was actually an advantage for the A7II over the A7III which has the new Z type battery. I already have 3 of them and now have 4. I keep two fully charged and ready for whichever camera needs a fresh one.

Great channel, I think you would love the GF1 if not already tried it. Made in Japan from solid metal and a great shutter sound. Not to mention "dynamic" black and white. My fave camera and I've had several hundred over the years.

Again another great video. I managed to purchase an Olympus em 10 Mk ii body for £155 a few months ago and it’s great for using vintage lenses. It has focus peaking and magnify capability which is really usefull. You can also change the focal length of the lens to take advantage of the in camera stabilisation to get sharp image results.
A really cheap entry camera is the lumix GF1 it has great features for anyone learning and can be purchased for under £50
I also shoot em10 mkII. Yes it’s great for adapting old lenses. I also have Olympus lenses.
I now use DXO Photolab to process and the sharpness and detail you get from even the kit lens is amazing. You can’t get that with Lightroom.
I love the EM10 also because it automatically shakes dust off the sensor so you don’t have to clean your images in the editor.
I totally agree, I have an EM-10 Mark II and I love it. Very good M4/3 to use with vintage lenses. I use russian lenses and Canon FDs, maybe a Minolta Rokkor 58mm f/1.4 soon.

The focus peaking on the A7 is fantastic, and essential when snapping shots with fast manual glass.
It has the best peaking of any camera I've used - very prominent and visible - which I think is a result of its full frame sensor. Peaking on the a6000, for example, is weaker.
@@zenography7923 Agreed. Also, I like the zoom-in function (which I have assigned to the "C1" button), as it allows you to quickly zoom into any part of the image that you choose and to really nail the focussing.

Just ordered Panasonic LUMIX G3 from Cex for £55. Great value!
With Olympus E-PL5 i've set up one of the top buttons for ISO setting and it's just perfect now. I can all of the main settings (shutter, aperture, ISO) without going to any menu!
The lack of focus peaking can be a problem if you have manual lens but it's not a big deal since you still can zoom in. Yeah it's slower but still gets job done.
I love using it with TTArtisan 25 f2 and Helios 44M-4. It is my first mirrorless camera and I wanted to sell it a year ago but now I don't think i'll do that anytime soon.

Instead of the Olympus PEN E-PL5, for essentially the same price or maybe $50-$75 more, you can pick up the PEN E-P5 which is essentially an OMD-M5 in a slightly smaller body. It has no built-in viewfinder, but the VF-4 EVF is also available to slide into the hot shoe just like on the E-PL5. THE E-P5 has a magnesium alloy body, front and rear control wheels, focus peeking, 5-axis IBIS, a small built in flash, etc, etc, Great little camera with 16 megapixel m4/3 sensor.
I picked one up in true mint condition with the EZ 14-42mm kit lens for $265 about 2 years ago, and I find myself grabbing it all the time instead of my Nikon DSLR simply because it's so small, easy to carry and takes very beautiful images.
I'm really starting to like the Pen cameras - more to come on them soon!
I too have to add my old Fuji X-E1 to the list (for stills), it's dirt cheap by now, but the sensor and picture quality are still absolutely great. And of course Fuji's vintage style with manual controls fits vintage lenses perfectly, both ergonomically and just looks-wise, film simulations add to the retro feeling. Also paired it with a Lens Turbo focal reducer to get most out of the lenses, which I'd absolutely recommend to everyone moaning the crop factor. :)

You said that because the sensor of the Lumix GH2 is so small it uses the centre of the lens. I can see this being a distinct advatage if your vinatage lens is soft at the edges, especially if the lens is cheap to reflect that fact, bargain! Do any other zenographers know of the existence of a speed booster (reducer) that would make lenses even more versatile for a GH2? To paraphrase one of your other reviews Mr Zenography, "this is a lovely little review." Thank you.

It's one of the best choices for shooting vintage lenses there is - maybe the best - at the price!

I have been thinking the same for quite some time. However, I recently came across comments that some prominant lens adapters may not fit well/snugly. I have not explored this myself, but apparently the a7ll does not have the wiggle.

For my A7ii and to mitigate the battery issue, I have a Neewer grip that racks it up to two batteries. And I like the added buttons and comfort when shooting portrait mode and just the added heft too. Gosh, now I just want to go shoot some more with it. I like your videos, you don't just get technical with lenses; it's great to have your comments on a lense's character and color rendition.
I'm much more interested in the aesthetic qualities of a lens, rather than very technical matters - after all, most of us don't usually photograph test charts!
2 tricks for the E-PL5: you can flip the screen up to face you instead of sideways, which is about the same. Second, find a way to activate the super control panel in the menu, which, for a reason no o è u derstand is disabled. Once you've done that, clicking the center of the direction pad will bring it up. Pressing the info button will togle between the old menu and the new one.
Becaause the camera has only the rear wheel around the direction pad, the super menu it is convenient because it allows you to select the value you want to change in a very direct way and modify it with the wheel.

I bought a panny gf3 3 years back £75 used it a bit then used it less and less dug it out last month to do a shoot with and boy did it impress, it impressed me so much I bought a gf7 used £100-00 and dear lord above it that camera damn good. Great idea and concept but make no sense when a big lens fitted. Going to try the gf7 at a wedding and looking forward to a day of shooting with no bad back!
These older digitals are becoming really good value now - good times!
One year ago I got a nearly mint Sony NEX-7 for 200 € and a Sony A7 with only 4000 shutter releases for 450€. Both cameras are fantastic due to their small form factor and weight and their high resolution of 24 MB. I purchased them with a mountain of batteries but I rarely empty one battery when I am strolling around to make still pictures. Especially the Sony A7 is a great companion for vintage lenses. But the NEX-7 has also its qualities (e.g. less issues with the corner sharpness of vintage lenses), especially when you consider the affordable price.
I wanted a Nex 7 when they were new, and I'd still like to try one - very nice little cameras!
Just a heads up, the Olympus EPL5 screen CAN flip 180 deg. upwards for self portraits.

Got an A7S2 for 450 green little camera it's a good backup to my a9 Mark II
If you want to pick up a really good mirrorless body for a reasonable price, take a look at the Olympus E-M1 cameras on eBay. I'm going to pick up a second body fairly soon as a backup camera. You can pick up one in excellent condition (near mint) for AUS$400-500. So, you're looking at 180-220 pounds, maybe a little more. I love mine and that's why I'll be getting a second one :D

Concur... got a good one used from B&H for about $250 USD. With the Olympus 14-150mm this is a dream one lens kit.
I once rented a Sony A7II and did not like it. The colors were really lackluster (using darktable for RAW). So I decided to get the Olympus PenF instead. It is awesome. The colors are gorgeous. The images I get out of it look so much nicer than the A7ii I rented, and the image stabilization is very good. And it is very beautiful. I got it for less the price than an A7I.
I quite like the colours from my sony - but Olympus colours are that little bit nicer!

There are lots - ones I particularly like are the Canon fd 28mm f3.5, Olympus 28mm f3.5 and f2.8 versions, Pentax (K Mount version) 28mm f3.5, to name but a few!

For a full retro feel to your vintage lens you can get a mint and boxed Fujifilm XT1 for under £300 on Ebay.
Well you can spare much less money and get x-pro 1 or x-e 1 or either x-e2 which aren't bad either

@@barrycohen311 A few years ago I went to a camera shop to buy an XT20 and I came out with an XT2 when I felt the difference in quality.
I've used an XT1 for adapted lenses, it's an excellent choice for the rendering of its files, its EVF, controls and haptics.
@@simonhodges6084 I own an X-T2, X-T20, and X100T. Build quality on the X-T20 is quite terrible, but still, for the price I paid for it, it has done really well for a small, lightweight camera.
My first mirrorless camera is the GH2. I still have it and used it as a second camera on a trip to England last year. Glad I was as my main camera was a GX7 which developed sensor trouble. But I can also recommend the Lumix GX7 which I replaced with a factory reconditioned GX9 when the latter turned out to be unrepairable. I recently picked up a factory refurbished Olympus Pen E-PL 8. Like the PL 5 you showed, this a very nice camera . I did a comparison of the PL8, 9, and the new PL 10 at DPReview.com and found that on all the truly significant specs they were virtually identical. A few extra bells and whistles, but nothing I cared about that was available in the Lumix’s I have. Nice little camera, light and easy to use. So, I’d add these to your list. Because I have been purchasing vintage lenses (many from your recommendations) I’m considering the Sony A7 body you showed to use with them, so I was interested in your recommendation. Thanks. I have x4 Canon EOS M cameras (the original 2013), Canon's first mirrorless. They seem pretty great and can be hacked also. I have nothing to compare them to, though. The only downsides is no flip or tilt screen, video autofocus is unusable, and battery life sucks.
I bought one about a week ago, love it so far but am a bit confused when it comes to vintage lenses, don't know which to get etc
@@HS-eq3gk Well its Canon APS-C so there is a 1.6x crop compared to full frame. So if you want an 80mm lens for portraits lets say, you need a 50mm since 50x1.6 = 80. So just decide first what focal length(s) you want for full frame equivalent. Zenographry has tons of great vintage lens videos here on his channel. You just pick what you like and can afford and get the adapter needed for EOS M. They will all need an adapter since your mount is EF-M. One cool interesting lens is a 24mm f/2.8 Pentax-110, it is the smallest lens I have ever seen. Not an amazing lens just interesting to have and cheap. There is 2 adapters for Pentax-110 to EF-M. One is like $18 and the other is $50+. If you want amazing video options, install Magic Lantern on the SD Card.

If you could have a Sony A7 or Sony A7 R which one would you take? Any difference in quality between the 2 with adapted vintage lenses?
Well, the a7r has rather higher definition, but the 24 megs of the a7 is more than enough for my needs. I think the a7r has a metal front plate too, rather than the a7's plastic one, but that's never troubled me either! The a7 sensor is easily equal to resolving the sharpest vintage lenses, while many vintage lenses are a bit soft anyway... All things considered I think the a7 is more than up to the job, and I can't see the a7r giving any real advantage.

I got into vintage lenses recently and decided to buy a used Sony A7ii camera for them. It cost me $700US on eBay. I think the A7ii is worth the extra money because it has IBIS (not on the A7).
The best camera feature to have with manual lenses is Focus Magnification. I find that it is much more accurate than Focus Peaking.
It's more accurate and I've used it from time to time but to be honest I find it a bit fiddly to use, and not easy to track a moving subject. Peaking and magnification are both useful, but I think this is an area where there's room for development in mirrorless cameras.

I had feared that the A7 wasn’t conducive to adapted lenses because of the myriad of menu options but you’ve dispelled that (great!). As for the EPL5, I wouldn’t recommend that, mine fell apart, it a bit annoying when your shutter button falls off! I would record the EP5, surely not much more expensive than the EPL5. Btw you didn’t mention image stabilisation on any of these cameras, which is a good thing👍🏽. Too much dependency on that these days.

@@mooremob100 That was a miss-type on my part, what I meant was that, yes, the EP5 is fine, miles better than the EPL5.
I’ve had several Olympus cameras, and they do tend to fall apart. Also my repair tech won’t touch them. Never a problem with multiple Panasonic bodies.
As a a7s user, battery was half hour at best, got a dummy battery to usb (with built in voltage booster) made a holder that goes to the tripod mount to hold usb power bank. There was no way I was going to use any battery grip that uses the same terrible batteries.
Now it can be used for several hours on several days without any thought to charging anything. It's now grab and go.
It is really fussy about memory cards, some trial and error to find a card that unlocked all video modes, and didn't give sporadic card read error.
Video resolution goes from ye olde Avi straight to different flavours of 1080 and some exotics , no 720 at 30 FPS my preferred format can do 720 at a 100 FPS which doesn't help file size or editing times.
It's not very Intuitive or ergonomic like a canon.
Had to Google to find some setting and functions on the fly after not being able to find them in the convoluted menu.
Images are either very processed or noisy.
Being a Sony and not water resistant I dare not sweat if in the same room as it. It feels easy to break bits off and all those wheels that could go rogue with a bit of grit.
Love the look of it very charming ,reminds me of my zenit EM and KM with all its issues listed above, also love the high iso(reason I chose it), the FF sensor with the 18mm flange distance , all the adapters to fit lenses from kiev60 to pentax110 , (reason I use it)
I can moan about the camera untill I'm ready to drop another grand , I prefer Fujifilm colours but I'm not going smaller sensor.

The cheapest GH2 on eBay in the USA is $300. Guess you have to wait for one to pop up.
Patience can certainly pay off, although as I understand it prices are generally a little higher in the usa...
I picked up a Panasonic GF2 12mpix and an Olympus 14-42 lens for about $110 USD for video recording. What I found very nice is that with an 8mm Rokinon fisheye the distortion is greatly reduced providing me a very wide point and shoot camera. I also purchased the camera for adapting some M42 lenses I heard very good things about from you and others. Thanks for the good recommendations.

Lots of RUclips / vintage lens photographers seem to have a Mk1 Sony Alpha 7. It's on my wish list - hard to find one for under 100 quid tho'
I have one also used. It's really great and the focus peaking is excellent most of the times. In low light it sometimes falls flat, especially when using ND or Color Filters
The GH2 is available at around £100, the Sony seems to go for around £500.
Art filters- bad for work (unless shooting RAW in parallel) but great for fun.

I hate Panasonic colors before the G7. So it's raw only. Even the GH4 was horrible for colors for video. Olympus colors are way nicer but they lack viewfinders except for expensive Pen F.
The G7 is the best camera imo by Panasonic as it was so cheap on sale, ultra lightweight, but all the benefits of a body like the GH line.
The fairly expensive GM5 was good for raw photos with its pocketable size and it was great with small lenses like the Pentax Cosmicar 25mm f1.4 and Olympus 9mm f8 fisheye bodycap. I may pick up an Olympus like the one in this video one day for those lenses and the Sigma 60mm f2.8.
Colour seems to be the Achille's heel of Panasonic - not sure about the full frame camera though...
@@zenography7923 I think Panasonic have much improved and by the time they started full frame I would say their colors on M43 were good. Very realistic. The G7 release after the GH4 was when I changed to saying they are now acceptable.
But they are just realistic, not actually pleasing like I saw on Ricoh and Fujifilm (looks like Olympus is naturally more pleasing too). Although it could be argued those are less realistic. I prefer a more pleasing surreal look that the likes of Fuji and Ricoh offer in their film simulations.
e.g. Fujifilm's Classic Negative is lovely and the main reason I will buy a new one next year.
Great video! If I may also throw out another recommendation. The Sony Nex series. It's a super underated apsc bodies that were over shadowed by the Sony 6xxxx. Their about 80-100 body only.

Correction, the crop factor of m4/3 sensors is~2, but the sensor size itself (area) is actually less than 1/4 the size of full frame.
Edit. I was wrong, m43 sensor isn't less than 1/4 the size of FF, its 0.2815 the size of FF. so slightly above 0.25. :)
He is correct, the MFT sensor is roughly half the size of a FF sensor. FF sensor is about 4 times the area but reduce it by 50% or by half and it’s roughly the same size as an MFT sensor. Bear in mind the different aspect ratios 3:2 vs 4:3 and scaling up or down is never going to exactly match.

@@RajivSamaroo you’re both right in your own ways, it’s still half the size whichever way it’s dressed up. Small modern sensors are amazing and MFT (Olympus) is my format of choice for professional work because of the superb colour repro, lens quality (edge to edge sharpness), build quality, weather sealing, reliability and overall light weight of the system.
Any plans to upgrade to something like the lumix s5 for your next camera? Since it has a stunning fullframe sensor, great ibis, much better lowlight performance and dynamic range, better colors, incredible 10bit 4k video with great log options. and much better focus peaking then your a7, it sounds like the perfect upgrade, not to mention it's battery life is much better as well, with options to power it with a PD battery bank.
The G9 and the S5 are the best value for money in my opinion. I am thinking to upgrade from my sony a6000 and buy a G9.

Hi! I think Sony brand is a good camera. But there native lenses are very expensive, because they are (Leica) German lenses. I think when you buy a Camera, you are also buying a modular system . Therefore, you would be using a lot of adaptors, to accept other lenses. In my opinion, I rather settle from a reputation camera maker Nikon, Canon, Fuji etc, in creating your own camera system. In my case I choose Nikon, way back in 1980, when I started my love for the art of photography. Camera is a tool to make our photographic art expression. Photography (beauty), is on the eyes of the beholder. In my humble opinion only. Thank you, & God bless.

Oops! 35mm FF lens on M43 is STILL 35mm! Not 70mm!
You're right, the lens doesn't change, but because of the smaller sensor, which 'looks' through a more central portion of the lens, it gives the same field of view as a 70mm lens on full frame.

I think mirrorless are getting bigger and heftier to replicate DSLRs which is a great idea, but the fact that all of them are is certainly questionable.

I prefer tilting screens, so some of us are happy with cameras like the Sony.
My only problem with the tilt screen is that, when shooting video, you can't see what you're shooting if you're in front of the camera! No problem with stills though...

Good video: it is so true one doesn't need the latest gear to take great photos, and there's fun to be had in using older cameras and lenses. But, dear god, please don't wish for flippy screens on all cameras. They are obviously a boon for vloggers, but as I have no need to photograph or video myself (if you saw me you'd know why!), they do not suit my style of photography at all. They don't play well with L Brackets, and I don't want a screen hanging off the side of the camera. For my purposes, the screen on some Fujis are the best solution, as the tilt in both portrait and landscape orientation.
I do like a nice flippy screen - but they're not everyone's cup of tea I suppose...

"GH2 will take pretty much any lens ever made"....that is older than GH2. Newer mirrorless lenses (Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF mounts) CANNOT be used even with adapters.
Well Eric, this is a channel for vintage lenses. The comment relate to the short focal flange distance of the GH2.
@@sidekickbob7227 I am aware of this, just thought adding a bit of precision to the narrative won't hurt. :) You never know who might watch, and if they decide to buy some mirrorless lens (like 50 mm f/1.8 OSS E-mount, which can be found pretty cheap) to use on their vintage GH2, they will be in for a nasty surprise.
