** Yes, before anyone spots it and the youtube police come out, I've used a diagram of a Grasshopper when explaining mantis respiration. It's the clearest and most basic example available to describe what I am explaining :D. Like I said, this is a BASIC care guide. - I tried to add this explanation as a subtitle but not sure if it worked!***
Grab a coffee, pen and paper and get ready for a good old rant followed by the basic care of Orchids Mantids!!!
TikTok and mantids have become entwined over the last few months, unfortunately, in the majority of cases this has caused major care issues. Nowadays it seems to be the norm to attempt to be TikTok famous, especially amongst younger people and now, mantids have been brought into this causing a spike in sales but also bad care. This video is not an attempt to shame anyone but to try and provide some sort of information on their care. I am by no means an expert and am sharing my personal experiences and research with dealing with these animals for a number of years and hope that this care guide may benefit at least one person who may have impulse bought one of these beautiful creatures. I have a huge passion and love for all animals, but my heart lies with the weird and wonderful. These may be looked at by some as just ‘bugs’ that do not equate to the lives of more domesticated animals such as cats and dogs however, these fantastic creatures really do deserve the best life possible when kept in captivity. I have received a shocking number of messages via my Instagram account from people who have impulse bought these creatures directly as a result of seeing them on TikTok. This concerned me massively and due to other commitments in my life I am unable to answer all questions from these people. Hopefully, now I can direct them to this video which contains basic care. Thank you so much for your support and I hope you enjoy the video.

...damn hun, I get a rant but I also get maybe putting in a disclosure or time stamp that let's people skip your personal opinion..Newbies (well anyone for that matter) are gonna go for those quick 30 second vids well before sitting all the way through a 10minute rant from someone they don't know just to get to the facts 😥 I appreciate your enthusiasm and just tryin to help 👍💜

I have wanted a orchid mantis and a ghost mantis for about 12 years now but it has just never been the right time for me to fully commit so I still haven’t had one. I’ve research them thoroughly. I’ve got the whole set up etc . I would only get one knowing I can fully commit to give them the best care /life possible. Any responsible pet owner would do the same.

I used to get met with “do your own research” or “why would you ask facebook, Google it” every time I asked a question in an aquarium group on Facebook. I was in the middle of research on Pea Puffers but was met with a ton of conflicting information and wanted some information from first hand experience. I ended up successfully keeping them but I never asked another question in an aquarium group. A few years later, I saw post in the same group saying the hobby is dying. I’m a firm believer that talking with people that have experience with the animal/hobby is a vital part of any research. Now, with more information than ever on the internet, I believe it’s even more necessary!! Thank you for this video. I hope to expand into the Mantis keeping hobby soon. I just have a lot more questions to answer 😅

Thankyou so much for this video - after keeping jumping spiders for ages I thought I'd go for a mantis. I got my first juvenile giant asian mantis this week along with a leaf decoration from the same place which was so much bigger than I expected. I put it in thinking it would provide alot to climb on but I'm so pleased I watched this I'm taking it out to give it more space to molt.

Hmmm, so my spare 10gal tank probably wouldnt be a good option. I can always put a screen in to split it in half but it wont hage any cross ventilation. And as far as the planted tank idea sounds like some rocks with mosses and stuff like that would be good as it wouldnt create issues with molting and do well beings misted all the time maybe even get away with a small fern type of plant 🤔🤔. Very informative thank you

I have a friend that’s looking to get one and she just got a 20 gallon. Would that be okay for an adult female? She wants to live plant the tank. Dimensions are 30” by 12” by 13”. Would love your opinion. It’s top opening and full mess on top :)
Edit: it doesn’t have cross ventilation though so I guess not. Do you have any suggestions of products in the US?

Have you looked at the aboreal enclosures from Tarantula Cribs to use for mantises? I have always loved walking sticks and mantises since I was a little girl and was thinking about getting into the hobby. I don't have any mantises yet because I wanted to research them like I have with my reptiles and fish. An insight would be greatly appreciated! 🥰

hi, i have a question. The shop where i bought my enclosure is the same shop i bought my orchid mantis later. In that shop they recomanded me a glass terrarium. the terrarium only has ventilation at the top and when i did some research beforehand i never really found something about cross ventilation so i thoughed this was okay. Is it a big problem if i don't have it? I can really make any holes bc then the glass will break. Also is it a problem if the enclosure is for her adult stage? i have given her fruit flies and they were all gone and i sometimes give her half a mealworm.

If you're going to make a video complaining about people giving out wrong information it pays to make sure you're information is correct....
You showed a few containers you have for your Mantis 12:00 with only a vent at the top, then 5 minutes later said about how important it is for cross ventilation and how bad the trend is with these Masey jars having just a vent at the top...
You then said about trying to keep the Mantis's Habitats clear of clutter, yet showed 2 of your own Habitats 20:58 with the floor completely filled with 'clutter',
You also said about one of the Acrylic tanks you got sent was 3D printed 20:44 which it wasnt, it was CNC machined from a sheet of Acrylic, i 3D print so like you, i dont like to see people giving out wrong information on our own hobbies,
I came here as im looking to get into keeping Mantis, but im doing my research first as im a responsible person, all this video has done is confuse me even more, seems like there is so much incorrect information out there and seems everyone just contradicts the next person or gives out wrong information,
The best option is to buy a book on Mantis keeping, a old book, one thats not being influenced by modern day so called experts.

    • @aimeesplanet
      @aimeesplanet  2 года назад +2

Hello and welcome. I would thank you for your comment, but that would be insincere of me to express gratitude for such a negative spiel. Buckle up, this is a lengthy reply.
I would firstly like to start of by saying this is a video addressing the complete incorrect practices of a few creators on the tiktok platform. With the intentions of not reprimanding others for inappropriate care, but to help educate. The tiktok videos were a major widespread concern within the mantis community at the time this video was created. Hence, why I made it after consulting with many hobbyists across the globe.
Secondly, why the salty tone?🤔 We are all here to help one another surely? Politeness costs nothing and is severely lacking in this world. A simple question regarding information contained within the video would suffice. Not an essay for the purpose of undermining a persons knowledge and experience to provide yourself with some personal online ego stroke. I’m afraid that if you truly are interested in learning more, I suggest you approach others with courtesy, that way you will be more likely to be welcomed with open arms and given as much clarity on a subject matter that you find confusing. I believe you will find it hard to learn and embrace advances in the hobby with the attitude displayed here. The ‘You catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar’ mindset really does apply.🐝🍯
      Okie dokie,
Let me help you out. The contradiction in care is something that is prevalent within any animal keeping community. UvB vs no Uvb, temperature ranges, substrate choices… the list goes on. There is no one fits all. What works for one hobbyist may not work for another. For instance, even variables such as geographical location need to be considered. We have a very diverse climate across the planet and some keeping practices may need adjusting to compensate for this. So yes, unfortunately you will have a lot of contradiction in care in pretty much any animal hobby.
      Re the 3D printed comment:
I didn’t mean to say 3D printed, but I’d received some 3D printed trees the same day as this video was made (seen in my unboxing of my ghost mantises). I had 3D printed on the brain that day.
Regardless of a slip of the tongue…I fail to see the point in you raising this, other than wanting to validate your argument (somehow) because it’s something you work with. I work in the scientific field by the way, but we will get into that shortly (please see the paragraph with the ‘🔬’ emoji which is pertaining to your concerns with my ability to research properly as a responsible keeper👌)
So, at most, this simple slip of the tongue may cause a minor inconvenience to someone wondering why they can’t find a 3D enclosure design online. Perhaps this explains the salty comment, because you were inconvenienced? If so, I apologise for that inconvenience. I wonder how your point correlates with the quality of care though? My videos are targeted at helping with misinformation regarding quality of care, not the production and manufacturing process of an enclosure. It’s an enclosure built for the purpose of housing mantises safely and more adequately. Obviously, the hobby is ever evolving and things with inevitably change.
      To my subscribers and followers:
If by me accidentally saying it was 3D printed is an issue for you and directly affects the quality of life of your mantises, please let me know and I’ll be sure to add a comment to help rectify this for future viewers. The majority of you are great and I would hate if that slip of the tongue may affect your care. As always, you’re amazing 🤩
      Contradiction on clutter:
Nice easy one here. See this mantis? See it’s wings? Pause, screenshot, whatever and zoom in if needs be. Regardless, this is an adult budwing who will NEVER undergo another molt. The molting process is the whole reason behind not over cluttering. At 25:42 I use Myras enclosure as an example. I explain how she’s an adult and is perfectly fine to be living in an enclosure which contains extra decor.
Once your adult mantis has come to this stage, feel free to add extra decor or plant it how I did. Larger species TEND not to try and molt from some of the very low lying clutter, however, younger flower species may, so watch out!
      Cross ventilation:
Want cross ventilation? Add some ventilation holes along the bottom of the cup just above the substrate line 👍
Again, I DID address this at 16:30.
Top tip: You can burn small holes in with a hot wire tool.
🔬Now, If someone wishes to comment on the delivery or structure of my videos, that is understandable. As for belittling my researching abilities…not a chance.
My area of expertise at my day job is majorly reliant upon my critical thinking and research abilities. I am also very open to new advances (qualities of a true scientist right there!) in care and I love learning about how we can all help eachother to help our animals!☺️
I am very new to creating these videos, so of course it’s going to be rusty and possibly a little repetitive or content is ‘higgledy piggley’. I assure you that all the information that I FEEL is relevant, IS contained within the video. I suggest watching it without skipping bits and possibly grabbing a little notebook if that helps ❤️.
Remember that I create these videos to HELP others and their mantises. We have all had to start somewhere and back when I entered the hobby for the first time around 17 years ago, I would have been so appreciative if someone could have delivered this content to me. Instead, I relied on researching and the experience of other keepers. I do not get paid to do this and do it purely for the animals welfare. I feel it worth adding that I used to work with these and many other exotic animals also. Just in case you may still have doubts about me being a responsible keeper.
The problem with an ‘old book’ is that research and standards of care can be quite outdated. As we learn more about these wonderful creatures we learn to adapt better keeping practices. Just because an animal is surviving using outdated practice, doesnt mean it’s THRIVING. The reptile hobby is a key example of why up to date research articles and practices, I believe, should be preferred to an ‘old book’. Furthermore, if we used this logic of referring to an ‘old book’ with regards to the medical field for example…one can only imagine the implications 😬!
Research papers are widely available to the public online relating to pretty much all fields of study. You know, just in case your worried about these rapscallion ‘so called experts’ running around spreading misinformation.
I always HIGHLY recommend including within your researching, discussion groups and forums. These may be in the form of Facebook groups that are accessible to the general public. The knowledge provided by other keepers with ample experience within the hobby should be very well respected. They also are able to debate practices in a respectful way, something that I very much appreciate. These are the closest to experts your going to get with regards to captive kept mantises and undermining their value in the hobby is saddening. There is little in the way of published research into the keeping of captive mantises, therefore experienced keepers prove invaluable in upping the standards of care.
Happybee in the comments below has added a wonderful comment which sums this up nicely. ❤️
I want to end by saying, I rarely reply to these sorts of comments as it’s wasted energy when they come from a place of defensiveness. My energy is better spent focussing on those with a more positive attitude to learning. However, in future if you wish to ask nicely I would more than happily help guide you in the right direction. Have the day you deserve my friend and happy mantis keeping ❤️
