Sparks. Doing things their own way since 1971.
Or since at least 1967, if you include their earlier incarnations as Halfnelson and Urban Renewal Project
@@Dekadentu 'Computer Girl' is interesting 😅! Lyrically ahead of time.
To those of you who haven't heard it, or know the background:
'Urban Renewal Project' was before 'Halfnelson', that was changed to 'Sparks' after their first album (which was self-named, and re-issued as 'Sparks').
Ron, Russell and a couple of friends used a "rent-by-hour" studio, and recorded a couple of songs, whereof only 'Computer Girl' somehow "leaked" out on RUclips. You can hear a noise, a woman saying "This is a recording", and another noise in the recording. Someone entering the room? I don't know, but it's a fun feature on a historical record.
This is up on YT.
The only copy that seems to exist today is the one Ron and Russell have, so for the compilation album 'Past Tense: the Best of Sparks', covering every album up until then, 2019, they brushed it off, and did what was possible to do about the sound, and put it as the first track on the album. At the tracklist you can read "Yes, it has scratches on it. Thank you."😂
This is also available on YT and everywhere else the album is published.
It's about a guy who has a relationship with his computer, but it isn't working well all the time. You can have any interpretation of it, or just take it as it is, but to write about a COMPUTER girl, in January 1967, amidst the era of ROBOTS in TV series and movies, humorous and frightening, wasn't common, even though there are a few other bands too who aimed at the future for the average people. Robots aren't a mainstream thing, yet anyway.
💖
Consider this - Russell is in his mid 70’s - Ron is nearly 80. Remarkable. Sparks are an act of rebellion.
we need to stop treating boomers like everything they do is "an act of rebellion"
The guys are long distance runners. Not only physically fit but still creative and fresh
You got that right!
Russell was born on October 5, 1948, and Ron was born on August 12, 1945.
In the mid seventies there were rumors about their ages, saying they were born in 1953 and 1950. We can only guess EXACTLY HOW those five years were suddenly gone, and why it flourished for as long as it did, but I'm pretty sure it had something to do with girls...
This was around the same time as they managed to trick media to believe that Doris Day was their mother 🤣.
They do have a beautiful sense of humor 😆🤣!
Anyway, at the end of the seventies their respectively five years returned.
But... did they?🤔🤔🤔
About Doris Day, when she passed away there was a rumor that she had an unknown son. This actually led to the law firm that handled the estate inventory made contact with the brothers, who had to come clean, no, Doris wasn't their mother. 😂
I still hark back to first time i saw sparks age 14..1975!..Coventry theatre..indiscreet tour...😊fantastic 👍
Awww wish my sister Iolanda could hear this she would LOVE … a lifetime fan of Sparks
died Nov 27th 2024. Aged 61 ❤

Bless her ❤she had fantastic taste..me darlin 😘 she is the no.1..in heaven 👍👌
That's far to young bless her heart . Like myself she was there right from the start ! She had class . May she sleep well 🙏
I'm so sorry to hear that. May she rest in peace, and you take care of yourself. ❤️
I hope that you have the possibility to attend at least one of Sparks' shows, they have a remarkable ability to energize their audience!
🕊️💖💖💖💖
Sorry for your loss ❤🙏
The fact that I’ve been listening to Sparks for 45 years now and I still get chills when I hear a new track from them is amazing.
I didn't know anything about Sparks until my husband took me to a concert and bought me their latest album at the time "A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip." It was the most amazing show I ever experienced, and that album, to me, is a masterpiece, and their best one. I am now absolutely obsessed. I have started collecting their albums, been to two shows, have t-shirts, posters, pins...and my collection and obsession continues to grow. I was asked how to describe Sparks and their music; my answer was, "Joy." They have brought so much of it to my life. I am normally a very quiet, reserved, and introverted person, but when their music plays or I'm at a show, I completely transform. I'm dancing and singing and conversing with other fans. Sparks is truly magical.
GROWTH. Seems to be the keyword when discussing the Mael Brothers... Sparks grows and they help us growth... as we grow to love their tracks. And the bros have grown so so much since the 1970s...
I relate to this. 😀
You saw them live and fell in love, I fell in love in 1975 but it took me *43 years* before I managed to see them live! (I'm in Scotland, off the beaten track) And yet still it was, as you experienced, a fantastic live show, and brought together 43 years of listening and made it all sound fresh out the oven. They're the best, glad you're enjoying them.
The Maels are the double gift that keeps on giving. It's incredible that they were part of the soundtrack of my high school years, and here they are still turning out bangers.
They are the best American British band.
These guys represent all that I like about alternative music. They've got integrity, artistic value, high energy, craziness and such youthful spirit. Thank you SPARKS!!! You are the last surviving band that has never failed it's fans!
There is NO BAND like Sparks 😍🙌❤❤💯 Been a Fan since 1977!!! Greetings & Respect from Stockholm Sweden!!! 🙂💙💛💙💛💫💫💫
Grönan och DR Koncerthuset! 👍
Everything Sparks has done over the last 10 years from FFS to present has been genuinely interesting and objectively great from a technical musical standpoint. Play any of those songs to someone who has never heard of Sparks and they would never suspect that they’re hearing two dudes in their 70’s who have been making music since the late 60’s. They’re just so vibrant and living in the present.
I played the FFS "Piss Off" video to my son and his partner. They were amazed and amused. They only knew Franz Ferdinand's music the Sparks mostly by name. To them, it sounded like a VERY GOOD FF tune... but they heard FF when I heard S.
Always a good day when a new sparks song is made.
👍 you say it right...Out of my Heart🎸⚡😃
1:57 When Ron smiles here - I smile back to him. 😀
How can you not ??
The dynamic duo have returned. always innovative, always changing.
It's the mid 2020s and there's a solid new Sparks single. Amazing, really.
This summer it'll be exactly 50 years since I heard them the first time.
They starts with a quarter century left of the 20th... and here they are a quarter century after that...
I find it amazing that Sparks continues to produce exceptional, compelling music 50+ years into their career. I honestly can't think of another band of that vintage still able to do that. The Stones don't. Aerosmith doesn't. Dylan doesn't. Even McCartney is unable to produce new music that is this vital and slick. I'm not even the biggest Sparks fan but I give them tons of credit - their output has remained exceptionally high quality. I'd go a step further and say that I think their music over the past 25 years keeps getting better and better.
My personal ranking of my 10 favorite Sparks albums has 5 from before the year 2000 and 5 from after. Such a testament to their sustained quality and refusal to fall into a creative rut.
@@codypagels1598 Being a Sparks fan for more than fifty years I totally agree with that !
Different genre to this, but Richard Thompson is, he's been recording since '67.
I strongly disagree on McCartney, tho...
Only other bands I can think of who has been producing good music for so long (but still not as long as Sparks) are Pet Shop Boys and Duran Duran
Still beating the clock, awesome!
When do I get to do things my own way?
Sparks are a musical anomaly. We should all be grateful they exist.
He FINALLY got tired of waiting to know when he gets to sing "My Way." 😉
seems kinda sad, like a 'goodbye' song/album..
@@stanisawturno211 not necessarily! just because they finally feel like sinatra doesn't mean they're stopping-- it wasn't their *only* goal
When they reach one goal, they aim for the next.
I think that they had mixed emotions about releasing the original 'Annette' album. They had worked hard on it, and also Rebecca Sjöwall, so 😉"the authors are a little vain"*, and that was THEIR OWN work, but on the other hand, they HATE to go back, they want forward.
Thankfully they at least went half the way, and gave us a vinyl album 😅! I AM very grateful, and I treasure it.
*"The authors are here and they're a little vain. A little vain." / 'So May We Start?' / 'Annette'
Btw, it doesn't seem like Russell has changed his mind from what he said in the documentary, that it's up to science, because they can go on for another 300 years 😅.
I'm selfish😄, I'm happy if they are still kicking as long as I am, born 13 years after Russell.
There's few things as satisfying than seeing an amazing band discovered when I was a teenager still producing creative music and images!
Sparks have been doing things their own way for 50+ years...and long may they continue to do so. Long live Sparks! ❤
You guys are so FUN!!!!!!! Thank you for this LOVE!!!
I've been a Sparks fan since i was 14 in 1974 living just outside of Toronto. I discovered you guys on a local T.V. entertainment interview. I immediatley bought the Propaganda L.P. which turned my brain inside out. I had to catch up also on your past L.P.'s. A few years later also as a Giorgio Morodor fan I was more than thrilled when you teamed up with him for a few years! Finally saw you both Live in Toronto at Lee's Palace for the "2 hands, one mouth" tour back in 2013 i think it was. I was cynical about it being just the two of you but quickly realized it was truly AWESOME, perhaps even better hearing all the songs i have loved replayed so simply! I think i cried a few times actually. Love you guys Big Canadian Love from north of Toronto here! ❤ Please don't ever stop doing what you both do!
yeah Barry! Fun to know they inspired you! I spent many nights dancing at the Barn when you were there!
Awesome song, awesome video! See you at Manchester on tour!
These guys might well be the greatest songwriters of all time, still knocking it out of the park year after year, they never seem to run out of energy or ideas.
Reckon they have the best fans too.
Its always so much fun to dive into the sparks world❤
It's new Sparks music day!!!
I’m so happy that we still get to experience new music from Sparks as new generations, I wish to see them live one day it’s a dream ❤️ great song !!
I saw them in Central Park in NYC.
Maybe you can see them on the upcoming tour this summer!
@@girlfromgermany they’re not coming to Turkey :(( maybe if I travel somewhere close to Europe i would be able to tho!
Sparks are EVERYTHING! Another opus of brilliance and innovation here.
50 years after "This town ain't big enough for both of us", they wow everybody who saw their amazing show at Glasto. Go boys!
Living legends! Vivid and vital! God bless the wonderful SPARKS! I love them!❤️👍🎶👏❤️
Absolutely fantastic, they just get Better and better.
It seems unreal, but it`s true!
My day is blessed ❤ Sparks music video are the best videos
Stunning song & video from quite possibly the greatest band ever to walk the planet.... Legends 👌
Still as innovative and modern sounding as anything going on out there today. Another great SPARKS song! ❤❤
Sparks the band that keeps on giving. My whole life almost! Been a fan since the beginning 🎉 Ronald and Russell should have they're own hall of fame.
God I love these guys!
Their continued output and relevance is remarkable. When so many of their peers have long fallen by the wayside, Sparks are the gift that keeps on giving.
I love Russell’s lower register.
Same
Lunatic geniuses. NO ONE has ever written 27 albums or so of originally original material before. And no one ever will. I just wish we all weren't headed into our own 80's. I still love them.
Ya never heard of Iggy?
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez
The Fall have entered the chat.
@@OldSethOnetooth The Fall barely had any tunes or frankly an actual singer.
Elvis Costello has.
Can't wait for the tour...They're great!
This is exciting! I'm Russian, and seeing Sparks in concert has been my dream since I first heard them in 2002, when I was in school. The best live concerts I've been to were Alice in Chains, Sigur Rós, Björk, The Cranberries, Tricky, and Dead Can Dance. Now I hope to see Sparks live in Stockholm this year!
Stockholm is a wonderful town. Welcome!
Удачи! У вас хороший вкус ❤
I missed their show in Moscow way back in 2007 I guess, but I was lucky to be able to go to London a few years later for the Two Hands One Mouth concert in Barbican and it was wonderful! I wish I could see them one more time!
You must go and see them live. They are absolutely fabulous. 😊
@@BjarneBlom Yeah!
Ever evolving and always original.
That's just so.. Sparks. There's a reason they're the musicians' musicians.
Wow, Sparks pull it out the hat yet again.
51 years ago, i went to see them live at The Southend Kursaal on the Kimono tour, never in a million years could I have guessed they would still be knocking the tunes out. Hats off to you Ron and Russell
Some tracks need few times listening before a spark lights, but when it does , there's big love for it.
I love the way there are nods to other albums in this video.
Got into Sparks two years ago, went to their gig at Royal Albert Hall, now obsessed! Can’t wait for Manchester!
Brilliant. See you guys in June. ❤❤
Top song & video from one of the greatest ever bands who just never got worse & long live Ron & Russell....
These guys have lost nothing in over fifty years. Bloody phenomenal!
Very Effin cool, been a fan for decades. Highly recommend watching their documentary.
Nothing stops Sparks and they are eternal.
Brilliant as always!
Love the instrumentation on this one, they know their sounds.
You never know what expect from these lads. This was cooler than expected! Fan since Woofer days.
Only smiles.
And it *sounds* so good!
These guys just get better and better.
MERCI 🧤&🗣 ⚘⚘
ron on the piano? nah, the piano on ron
Shades of the Indiscreet cover!
Yes, it's almost like a turn around with Ron on the floor amongst the wreckage 😊
@@joebeer2160If the new album is anywhere near as good as Indiscreet, we're in for a treat.
That's the first thing I thought of too! And of course, they're indestreet
I love how Ron keeps trying to play the piano as it gets more and more damaged. That man is dedicated to his craft.
Masterpiece love it so much❤❤❤❤
Gee, that was fun.
I've been listening to them for over 40 years. And they haven't stopped, and there's always a new tune.
They're really inspiring, that we shouldn't stop.
Always brilliant. Best video I have seen in a long time.
I've been a fan for over 50 years. Love the new song and hoping to see Sparks in Toronto later in the year for the third time since 2022, and fifth time since 1982. P.S. THE VIDEO WAS SUPERB!!
Amazing ❤
LOL !!!! Poor Ron Gets it again... Will look forward to the vid tomorrow !
He had complaints about the cream pies (In Outer Space). What will he say about this?
But, for God's sake, keep Russell from the sledgehammers!! 😅
@@annabackman3028 LOL !
These artists are unstoppable and they do things their own way !! and Thank God for that!
Jesus, their last new stuff was only a couple of years ago, they just don't stop, they just shake off age don't they?!😀😁🤩
Just got tickets to the uk Manchester show can’t wait
These guys are an American Musical Institution. The documentary on Sparks is brilliant to watch for new fans to see.
Fantastic.
They've still got the fastball. Amazing.
Whenever I'm down and depressed I reach for sparks to cheer me up 😊 Thanks Ron and Russell ❤️❤
Wow, what a great song and video! Love it!
So it's finally the time when he gets to sing his own way.
Fantastic video, another surreal masterpiece.
Getting Art of Noise vibes from the crashing piano… of course the tune is pure Sparks. Cool to see them getting back into electronic sounds too.
Friedrich Nietze wrote this riff. Fantastic dark album from a young man. My favourites from a great artist.
Can't wait to see this, super looking forward to the new album!!!
Love it ❤
Mein "Gute Nacht" Lied!!!❤❤❤
I want to be as cool as these guys in my 70s.
That's the Anthem! 🔥
Took it 31 years to do it their (own) way and the fans couldn't be happier 🎉
Looking forward to the tour ❤
featuring not 2 but 20 mael brothers!
You can't have too many mael bros lol
YEAH
Please have a concert in Korea, too
I love you.😀🤗❤
Würde mich für dich freuen.
At least Russell seems to like South Korea very much!
Haha 😆 on the last album, 'The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte', there's a song about North K; 'We Go Dancing', the silly marching, with high kicks.
@@annabackman3028One of the very best from the album...!
Best band in the world - ever.
Well done.Love the video ❤❤
Amazing. Talented musicians like The Sparks just keep cranking out the hits.
What a fantastic video!! Sparks showing the world, how it's done!
Absolutely brilliant! After many years they are still going strong! Love them ! ❤
I Love the Mael Brothers since 1979
Really like this song.
Isn't it more than about time Sparks get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Sparks back on their best way ever, we've been waiting for this for a long time !!!
Looking forward to the album! 🇬🇧🎵✌️
Superrrrrr!!!!!!🔥🔥🔥👏👏👏
