How I take apart a pocket watch, Hamilton 992, Part 1 of 2

- I disassemble a Hamilton 992 pocket watch. This is how to take it apart for repairs or fix. Had to do it in two parts cause I explain too much, some screws gave me problems, not enough memory in the video camera and RUclips gave me only 15 minutes. For part 2 go to • How I take apart a poc... .
This video performed by an amateur. Do not attempt at home. No watches were harmed in the making of this video. For entertainment only.
As a beginner, who only needs to remove old 992B hands and replace with NOS hands, thank you for the clear demo of how to do it using that style of puller, which I happen to have :-)
I have this watch. I am so grateful for your video.
thank you soo much for taking the time to do this. I found it very helpful , it is funny that I work on cars and we both run into the same problems of stuck screws. thank you ,thank you
I understand your concern for me passing on bad habits. That is why most of my videos begin with "How I" and not "How to" in the title. I also have the following in the description "This video performed by an amateur. Do not attempt at home. No watches were harmed in the making of this video. For entertainment only." I am not trying to mislead anyone as to my qualifications. Is there anything else I should do?
I THINK you're EXACTLY right! Why am I attempting to replace this crystal from a Pocketwatch i JUST bought off of eBay, when it fell off in my hand? ALSO the other one I bought from the same seller arrived with the "seconds hand" off, and floating around UNDER the crystal, but that one is an open faced watch. I think MAYBE someone dumped their garbage in my lap. WHO can I send the bezel to, to have the crystal replaced? What do you think about Daves Pocket watches? R THEY ANY GOOD?
Watch part/repair tool sites as well as Ebay have a rubber ball type tool for case-back removal. I initially bought one for opening my wrist watches without scratching, and it's great for that but I've also found it ideal for opening stubborn pocket watch case backs.
I had a watch with a broken off screw head. After I removed the part that the screw held down I was able, with a pair of pliers, to unscrew the screw. If you have some small drills you could drill it out. My staking set has some punches that are used to drive the screw out but it looks like that involves messing up the threaded hole.
11:50 There aren't many better watches than the Hamilton 992, though there are some much more expensive and with gadgets of marginal utility (complications, they're called).
If your going to wind it up make sure when you are done with it that you let the spring back down. Leaving a mainspring in the wound up position for a long period of time ruins the spring if its a old style spring. It will "set" and become useless and then you will need a mainspring replaced.
just noticed te other day that the crack on my pocket watch glass (1970's molnija $20 of ebay from ukraine) has gotten bigger is there any kind of special stuff to repair it or will i have to buy a new glass and whats the pricing for them? nice video.
This is a GREAT video, now can U SHOW me how to replace the crystals back on these 6S and 18S Elgin HUNTER cases?BOTH movements R set down in RIGHT w both retaining screws holding the movement in.Someone mentioned a WAX! Is that the trick?I am pushing on the bezels ONLY and can not get them to POP to the case w the crystals in place? We did dry runs on BOTH w NO glass, & both crystals poped right on! BOY THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZY & I HAVE CRACKED ONE EDGE OFF THE CRYSTAL NOW, have spare crystals.
I have a screwdriver sharpener. It has a roller on each end and you squeeze it to open it up for the screwdriver. It is spring loaded so it clamps the screwdriver. I have no choice but to sharpen the blade from top to bottom. That is the way it is made.
And on just 1/2 wind the balance staff starts! I dont have to twist it, or tap it, she just runs, and the F/S dial on the movement is RIGHT IN the middle and it runs right on time. I have had TOO MANY Elgin go south on me, but again it could be who handled it! I am becoming partial to Waltham. Do you feel one movement is better than another? HOWARD & BALL seem to bring in the bigger bucks for whatever the reason! NOT just the stirrup bows, but the movements them selves!
Recently I have started buying pocket watch from overseas. I already have a few Hamiltons and some USSR watches in my collection. I'm a beginner, so please forgive my ignorance.
One of my Hamilton 975 Pocket Watch has some issues. Watch ticks for a few seconds and stop even though the watch is fully wound. If I shake the watch a bit, the watch starts ticking once again. I also noticed that at certain position or on small shake, watch stops. I want to understand the problem with the movement and how to get this fixed. Please advice.
This will also help to make better purchase decision . Thanks
Rony
When you say that the watch stops in a certain position the first thing that comes to mind is a broken balance staff.
Превосходно!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Спасибо учитель!!!!!!!
Great. Beautiful watch.
I want to thank you again for taking the time to answer me; Next time you write me, do it privitelly and tell me your first name! I appreciate everytrhing you helped me out with and your right! IF a movemenst screws are ALL hacked up, then I stay away from it, cause someone worked it who just didn't care! I have also LUCKED out on a 6S Waltham w JBOSS 25 year that looks like it was bought in 1902, and placed in a time capsule! LIKNE NEW, & I was the ONLY bidder at $99. The doors are like MIRRORS
The watch would do nothing if the balance is missing. The pallet fork prevents the train from moving. Without the balance to move the pallet fork nothing will happen. I know there are sites on the internet that sell old watch parts, try there. You could buy a broken 992 for parts or maybe a similar 16 size hamilton. I wouldn't use a 992B and make sure the hairspring stud is correct for your watch.
The reply is meant to be funny. It is ridiculous that someone should have to name their first born for something so trivial. That is the humor in that reply. The recipient of that reply thought it was funny and replied so. Since he saw the humor in my reply everything is fine.
Unable to remove backplate.. it's either spun too hard or it was meant to not be opened?
@mig29jette The only reason I had a crystal come off a bezel when I removed the bezel from a watch is because the crystal was a replacement and it was not fitted right.
@ALLwayTOroute96 On some pocket watch cases you have to pull the crown out as if setting the time to get the stem out of the way to get the movement out. WARNING, on some cases the crown will not pull out because it was made that way (lever set watch). With that type of case if you pull the crown you will break it off. For most wrist watches you have to remove the stem from the movement before taking the watch out of the case. I show this in some of my videos.
would you have any tips on removing a busted screw from a watch? The screw head has completely broken off.. unfortunately it is the screw that holds the spring and lever for the bottom chronograph function.. :/
There are a couple of ways. First are you a capable Watchmaker..??? if not take it to one. Is there any amount of stud sticking up.?? or is it broke off flush.???? Place a small drop of watch oil on it and let it sit for a day. Once it has 'soaked" you can try moving it with the tips of your tweezers. You can also use a screwdriver. Either way, be prepared to resharpen both when you are done it chews up the points. If you cannot break it lose then
I recently exchanged 2 movements on 2 HUNTER case pocket watches, BOTH Elgines,as you know you MUST remove the crystals by removing the bezel ( popping the bezels off ) UNLIKE unscrewing the front and back on an open faces pocket watch. SIR, I can NOT get the darn bezels back on with the crystals that came OUT of same. What is the trick? I tried from the bottom to the top, the top to the bottom where there is no notch on the bezel near the bottom hinge, I use the top square to line up the bezel.
Is that a type of vice for watches ? Could it be used to unscrew the back off of a pocket watch ?
It is called a movement holder. It cannot be used to unscrew the back off a case.
@@bunnspecial I got the back off with oil and duck tape. (Alabama chrome)
@beauty101115 Can you see the movement? It might have another cover that you also have to open. I just recently did a video with a watch that has two back covers that swing open it is for a Illinois watch.
@mig29jette I don't have any watches that need crystal replacement and there is no way I am going to take a crystal out and put it back in for a video. I know they can be tricky to put in and it is easy to chip the edge. I like the wax idea, lubrication.
@wookiefable As far as I know you have to replace the watch glass. I am not sure what it would cost.
I have a Hamilton 972 that the hands have rusted on the post, is there a way to remove them?
do u think you could do a video of making a pocket watch play music plz I need help on making one like a melody plays when you open the watch
You would have to make that it wouldnt be difficult, just buy a music cranker of a song. They get a large case, and put the pocekt watch next to it, for a pocket watch. put cranker on the side and gear it up to the case. So when the case is being opened the cranker spinns playing your music.
what if you have a waltham pocket watch, and it flips open on the back but there is just a plate? I cant get it open, i have tried prying, turning ...everything
@KorruptedCell You realize now that you have to name your first born after me.
@bunnspecial okey i now know how to repair a mainspring, but when i'm going to take the watch out of the housing the stick or pin coming down from the crown don't allow me too. why?
I understand, i was asking if you had made a video or replacing a crystal!
My video camera is The Sharper Image HD920 Touch.
I agree.
@bunnspecial no, you can see not movement, just another cover but i cannot figure out how to open it lol.. and thanks i will check out that video and see if its useful to me 8)
Do you remember which way you had to turn the screw you address at 11:15? You don't show it being removed. Is there a general rule for which way? Counter-clockwise for American watches and clockwise for Swiss?
usually the screws which go clockwise have little markings on them
@AssaraxDemyx14 Uploaded video on how I made hand removers to my channel. Thanks for the idea for a video and next time I will write your name down so I can mention you in the video.
Real asmr
@AssaraxDemyx14 I know of two other tools that can be used. One is similar to the tool I use in this video but it is squeezed instead of pushed down. The other tool is like little pry bars. The little pry bars are used in pairs and one is place oppisite the other under the arms. I am making a set little pry bars now because I am to cheap to buy them and will post a video shortly.
Wie genau geht die schöne Uhr?
How could you forget the hand puller? ROOKIE.
are you a professional at this or is this your hobby??
I state my qualifications in the description of this video and talk about them in my latest video.
@mig29jette I looked at Daves web site and it appears that he knows what he is doing. If it just for one watch I would send it to him. Most of the watches I bought from ebay were no bad surprises. A couple were worse than I thought but I either didn't ask the right question or was warned. Can't win them all.
@mig29jette The next time I replace a crystal I will make a video. Of course that doesn't help you now but what can you do.
You might want to sharpen your screw driver blades to make it easier for you. Or even better to consider, buy yourself a premium Bergeon screwdriver set. They make this operation so much easier.
I do sharpen my screwdrivers now and then. I made a video showing the sharpening of my screwdrivers.
I fixed my pocket watch looking at this vid... lol
The box says STAR Hand Remover.
I bought this watch on ebay.
how do I get the back to come off
I have a video showing how to open up a pocket watch. Watch it and if you have any question let me know.
bunnspecial
Spun to hard or snap off back.
Good video. :-)
You have less than a 85% chance of getting it to run and the most important thing....You have to get it to keep time.!!!!! Good luck....Take my advice, buy a piece of junk and play with that....take a good watch to a trained professional...
The mechanism of that watch looks like a 'Regent Hills' Chinese pocket watch I bought. The Chinese probably copied it.
This design is over a hundred years old so you would be correct.
why do you whisper
I can't get the back off
Please make SURE it's on a hunter case w a removable bezel if you make the video of replacing a crystal; casue GUESS what I have been doing for hours since I wrote you last? YES, thats right, and I have failed. Time to walk AWAY and pop a Heineken before I boil over. Actually I am quite at wase and at piece right now cause so many say it;s SO HARD TO REPLACE A CRYSTAL IN A HUNTER CASED ELGINE 18 SIZE POCKETWATCH! Some say to super glue it in the bezel wich i will NOT due; sorry!
Raymond Pontremoli,
Instead of making ignorant negative comments, a more productive use of you time could be spent making your own watch repair videos.
The word YOU should have been YOUR. Sorry for the typo.
david
Buy a screwdriver shapener, sharpen your tools, rework the points on your tweezerts....
You tools should be in pristine condition. I spend at least two hours a week sharpening screwdrivers and tweezers. Your tools are the extensions of your hands, they have to be perfect. Tweezers should be sharpened so they do not "spit" parts out when you squeeze them. Also, the lines on the screwdriver blades should run from top to bottom not sideways. Yes there is a reason for it...
there is a solution that you can soak the part in to get the broken stud out. The only thing is this solution eats steel so the part you soak in this solution should be completely stripped down so there are no steel parts attached to it. Basically you have to tear the entire watch apart until you have the bare part with the broken stud in it...and nothing else. Once yo soak it, it takes a few days the screw will disolve leaving the brass plate or part unharmed. Good luck, not an easy fix.
You are constantly using too small screwdrivers. Really hard and painful to watch.
Leave off mr bunny or else . 😎
@bunnspecial Hahaha
thats the weirdest reply i have seen
I can't just twist off the back part.
Ergentonio1st If you are telling me that you can't remove the back by unscrewing it you should watch the video I made on how to open up a pocket watch case. I show how to open up many types of cases. It might be of service to you. Check it out and let me know if it helps.
bunnspecial It's a snap on. The video definitely helped. Thanks.
gives come make part a most a net point most a Pandarus Cost oseid
,come my father yo ohhhhj
all you keep saying is ,I dont know what this is called and i dont know what this is for.you dont appear to know what youre doing do you?
What I do know is how to take it apart and put it back together.
@bunnspecial Hahaha xD
Oh - oh
nice video
look more pocketwatches here > 123dalmi
Sorry had no intention of being rude. I call it as I see it and 75% of the people who claim to be professional watchmakers are not. I do not do watch repair videos for one reason and that is everyone's skill levels are different and showing you what I can do does nothing for you. I suggest you start with the most important tools and they are called books. I cannot teach someone something that does not have the basic understanding of the different physics of a watch. I certainly didn't mean to be rude or offend anyone. I went to school for 3 years to learn this trade and then spent 34 years behind the bench perfecting my skills. I also hold a BS in Mechanical Engineering.

I certainly don't mean to critisize you but you not only have some major bad habits but you are passing those bad habits along to novice hobbist and all they are going to accomplish is to ruin a nice watch. Your first comment to anyone not formally trained should be this
"Buy a old watch you don't care about and do not care if you ruin it. Do not use your GrandFathers pocket watch in hopes you will fix it. You will will ruin it ....You have less than 75% chance of getting it together.
