This watch has a 992B balance in it
The 992E (elinvar) had a split arm balance with a elinvar hairspring that was dyed blue and was also the first 16 size Hamilton with a friction balance staff
If it is a 992E the main plate will be stamped with the word “Elinvar “next to the balance cock if that is not there, it started life as a standard 992 with a split arm balance, blue steel hairspring, and a riveted staff .
I have done the same upgrade to one of my 992 watches using a 992B balance complete but the hairspring stud is hex shaped and had to be replaced with the button type used on all 992 watches.
The 992B balance is thought to be the best pocket watch balance ever made by many including myself 😁
You should be able to get near perfect time in all positions with that balance 👍

Good tip on rotating the hairspring collar away from the attachment point to remove it. I wish I had known that earlier, thank you!

Thoroughly enjoyed this. I've always known the roller jewel to be placed at 90 degrees to the balance arms. While you can position the hair spring and have the balance in beat with jewel in any loation, I've read that positional timing (pendant up, left, right) is affected by jewel position. I believe the balance timing screws are adjusted from the factory with the jewel perpendicular to balance arms and accurate time keeping in all positions depends on jewel location. But I'm just a self taught hobbiest and have a lot to learn! Thanks for your great content ... very entertaining.

Being new to watch repair I've watched dozens of balance staff replacements. However, your video has been the most informative. Your detailed narrative is very helpful in
learning the names of parts, the sequence of disassembly and reassembly, etc. I look forward to watching the cleaning of this movement. I am now a new subscriber.

I have one I need this done on, it's a bit beyond what I've done to date.
The same old story It was grandfathers railroad pocket watch...
He really did work for the Santa Fe in Raton yard as a signalman in the late 40's early 50's, grandmother however says it spent more time in the hawk shop than in his pocket on the railroad.

    Hi.
May I ask if balance staffs of the same pocket watch size from the same manufacturer but different models are identical? How about those of the same size but from different pocket watch manufacturers?

Is this a 992 or a 992B balance. Were not the 992 riveted in and the 992B use the press fit staff? Is this the original balance to the watch?

      Ding ding ding!
      You are correct sir
      This 992 has a 992B balance in it🧐
The 992E (elinvar) had a split arm balance with a 992B style friction staff and they dyed the hairspring blue because they feared the public would not trust the Elinvar springs
992E had the first friction staff and I think it is a bit shorter than the 992B staff
Anyway, this balance is an improvement over the standard 992 balance 👍

I was surprised that you didn’t cut the rivet with a graver using a watchmaker’s lathe. The balance should also be poised again with a poising tool.

Fantastic, I enjoyed this. Ive worked in aerospace for 35 years, watching you do this repair is nearly the same, although much smaller than what I have worked on. Pressing ball bearings onto or into a rotor shaft in an electric motor. What I am getting at is the way you supported the balance wheel is the same as I would have done supporting a ball bearing or a rotor stack and shaft. I knew what you were doing in every step in regards to how you supported the wheel in relation to the shaft. This watch will go onto Ebay?

Yes. I’ll probiotic it on eBay. I’ll make a video of the service and timing for next week

I’m so upset right now. I ordered a Hamilton 21j size 18 pocket watch got it today. It was running perfectly. I placed it in my pants tiny pocket and I hung the chain inside the bigger pocket. I’m carefully folding the pants to put it in my locker then in heard the watch drop. My heart sunk. Picked it up there’s a little dent 😢. Then I noticed the watch stopped moving. Opened it up and realized something is wrong with the balance ring . Something said leave it home and I didn’t listen to myself. Wanted to show my my coworker who’s into watches the watch. Now it’s just ruined my whole night . I’m always careful and I’m so made at myself. Now I have to find a way to get it repaired , it’s a beautiful watch too 😭😭😭

This is why you need a watch chain...

Why didn't you rivet the staff to the balance wheel?

    • @watchesandjewelry
      @watchesandjewelry  3 года назад +1

The wheel collet holds the staff under pressure. Without the collet it would need to be riveted.

@@watchesandjewelry Thanks. I missed that. I hadn't seen a balance wheel like that before.
