18s Waltham Model:1879 Grade: P.S. Bartlett Balance Staff Replacement. This video is created by an amateur hobbyist and shows the start to finish job of replacing a riveted balance staff.
Nice video! I’ve just started working on old Walthams and your video was to the point and told me what I wanted to know! I’m finding that if you buy a movement that’s used and needs work, 75% of the time the balance staff is broken/bent. Now, if I can just find a way to afford the tools to do this! While I enjoy the highly polished watch renovation videos, I prefer this type of video to actually learn how to do things! Make more!
终于知道这些工具的用途了,感谢你。Finally know the purpose of these tools, thank you.
Great work, methodical approach I’ll bet you have been repairing watches for awhile.
Thanks, I learned a LOT. I think maybe I'm willing to try this on my watch now.
Thanks great video you make it so systematic professional and easy. Proper tools make the job easier, the video is so clear and focused probably one of the best instructional videos I just subscribed.
@JPS JPS I’m not sure what you are getting at? Considering I do anesthesia for a living, yes working on vintage watches and repairing them is a hobby. My dad is a certified watchmaker and retired, so much of the equipment I have was gifted from him. As well he has taught me a great deal in my learning this as a hobby. The point of the video was to share a concise step by step approach to changing a staff, with only commentary and tools needed and without hours of talking unrelated to the task at hand. You seem to be missing the point of the video? I made this video years ago as I was getting into the hobby, and yes like anyone with a hobby and passion you tend to buy the tools and equipment needed for the hobby regardless of price. And yes, some hobbies are expensive, so whatever point you have tried to make has made you look rather juvenile in your attempt. Most people have watched this video for knowledge of this process, you seem to have watched it in order to make unfounded accusations with no basis. Sorry you missed the point of the video, perhaps there are better ones out there for you.
Thank you Sir, for such an informative video.
Very helpful. Thanks.
Good job !
Hey nice job. I would suggest marking the location of the stud not the collet, it’s more accurate since it is on a bigger diameter.
I just done a staff replacement on a PS Bartlett model 1879 last night
I also done some other repairs to this movement, it came to my bench with both pivots on the staff broken, balance it self distorted, hair spring messed up, on further investigation I found it had the wrong main spring in the barrel (too wide) when attempting to wind the watch it blew the barrel cover off, and the cannon pinion was loose but thats not a big deal, after replacing the balance complete (the only thing I saved was the roller table and jewel) and main spring and tighten the cannon pinion and a complete strip down and service it's performing very well, it's now one of my go to daily watches to carry as I mostly carrry pocket watches rather than wear a wrist watch
Yeah this watch was a victim of a "want to be a..." or what I call a cowboy
Nice work sir.
Andrew Wilson Thank you for that!
Can you please show the 15A and B staking tool u used. my old boley doesnt have A or B's alas.
Thank you! But Please if You can add other watchmaker wark...
Maybe you can make a list of tools and the numbers of the stakes used.

Hi can you help me , i have the staff replace but my driver or volant dont know the right position what can i do ? Thanks
What is the spacer you used to hold the balance wheel down when pushing the shaft out? My staking set doesn't have that
Josh Speer it is called a K&D balance staff removal tool. I have 2 different sizes. One for wrist watch and small pocket watch sizes and one for larger pocket watch sizes. You can find them for sale on eBay. Thanks for watching!
I have a K&D No. 18 staking set complete. Can I use that for this kind of repair? I know there are different number sets.
Yes you can, there are several styles of the staff removers and methods to remove the staff without damaging the wheel. Make sure you have what you need, if not looking into the k&d staff remover tool that I used in the video
💯💯‼️®™️
Thank you !
do you do repairs, if so, how do i contact you?

Az sharptime youteub im wach makar halp
You seem to think we out here know about what you know. You skip some steps.
@JPS JPS the point of the video was to show the process of changing the staff and only changing the staff. It was not to point out every inadequacy of the balance wheel, trueness, poise etc. please pay attention. Class is excused
Jim, What steps exactly would you like to know more about? This was made many years ago now, but the point was to make something that did not exist at the time I made it. A clear video with camera clarity and focus of the work, without endless talking of things unrelated to the task at hand. It accomplishes that at the very least. Yes minor steps were omitted to shorten the video but not many. I would be happy to clarify or help you understand any of those omitted steps if you like.
