    Hello thanks for this video it helps a lot. I just bought my first omega pocket watch to repair and the balance staff is broken but how do I buy a new one? I saw your video on where to buy parts but I don't even know where to find the caliber reference of my watch

      Maybe try the book "Bestfit" to determine the right caliber. that will help in your quest Eliott.

    I thought the old rivet must be cut off in a lathe before you you tap the staff out, to prevent to damage the balance wheel?

    • @ChronoglideWatchmaking
      @ChronoglideWatchmaking  3 года назад +2

      Hi Noomi, that is true for bigger balancestaffs. the downside with the lathe is that you loose the opportunity to measure the balancestaff afterwards for the correct size.

    What can I do if the spoke hole is out of round

    • @ChronoglideWatchmaking
      @ChronoglideWatchmaking  3 года назад

      Hi John, try to make the hole perfect round (and way to big) in a lathe. Make a new centre in the lathe from high quality brass and rivet it.

    Ima newbie watchmaker and Ive been studying and watching different watchmakers. and ive been led to believe that you need to use a balance staff removal tool like the K&D 50 to clamp balance wheel down while you drive staff out. ive been told its to ensure that balance wheel isnt distorted. Is this true ?

    • @ChronoglideWatchmaking
      @ChronoglideWatchmaking  2 года назад +2

      There are a few different ways of removing the balance staff. In the Dutch watchmaking school you are taught to remove the table with in a lathe because of distortion. I agree in theory but it is not practical for measuring the old staff. Just to cumbersome. At many other schools you are taught to tap the staff out with a staking set, which is faster and if you do it the right way there is no distortion either. Interesting point of discussion with different views.

  • @randylangston2562

    That was brutal to watch! Always remove the roller first and use a hole only slightly larger than the table on the balance staff. At 4:04 the wrong hole size (to large) was used due to the roller not being removed. Which contributed to the damage. The rivet should always be removed in the lathe first or a K&D staff remover used to avoid the massive damage/distortion to the balance wheel and its cross arms. You only cut away the rivet flush with the cross arm, so the staff can still be measured. However, the hole in the balance wheel dictates what size the staff should be. Noomi you are right! A lot of time appears to have been spent off camera repairing the unnecessary damage between 17:50 and 18:06.

    • @ChronoglideWatchmaking
      @ChronoglideWatchmaking  3 года назад +1

      Hi Randy, there was no damage, but i agree is would be good to show the alternative way of removing the table using a lathe. Thank you for your feedback, ik will make a video to show your way of removing it. Thanx!
