Stumbled on this gem. Sad that mods are becoming less supported. It seems more necessary now adays, seeing how a lot of games are rushed and trimmed down to meet budgets and time restrictions. Communities can really flesh out games into full experiences.
“Modding is dead”
But...
But no
It's a mere shadow of what it once was. Consider, for example, that Counter Strike and Team Fortress wouldn't exist without modding, and yet almost no other game like that has emerged since -- a game which was once a mod of another game. Latest one that comes to mind immediately is Red Orchestra and that was still over 10 years ago.
Crazy Eyes yeah, but it’s not by any means dead. And it’s not gonna die for a while either, whenever a new game comes out one of the first major question people have is “will this have mod support?” But I do see your point.

For those nerds curious: "occlusion culling" is when the engine hides 3D geometry that is out of sight.
This is important for optimization because without occlusion culling, map geometry and objects that the camera can't see are still processed by the renderer, taking up GPU cycles.
Back in the days when I played Custom Edition and my PC was a potato, it drove me nuts when map makers wouldn't bother to learn how to place portals effectively because a custom map that was no more detailed than something that shipped with the game would run like garbage.
I have some mapping experience for Jedi Academy on the old idTech 3 engine. I think the very same concept applies there as well, except it's called visibility (vis). While the level editor was capable of making visibility portals automatically, a map may still need some manual portal-hint placements to keep the FPS high and prevent or minimize FPS drops. It's an effort most players will never know about if the mapper does a good job.
nerds lololol
Occlusion culling is when the game engine doesn't _render_ objects that aren't visible to the camera because they are obscured by other objects or geometry.
This is not to be confused with SSAO or Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, which has nothing to do with not rendering objects and is in fact about approximating ambient light occlusion.
³
@@shingshongshamalama And on that note as well what the OP really described is "frustrum culling" where geometry rendering is limited to the player's camera fov which can then be used in combo with occlusion culling.

14:50 For anyone wondering, “Occlusion culling” is a thing in 3D graphics that hides stuff you shouldn’t be able to see because something else is in the way. (I.e. if there are two parallel walls on a flat plane and you stand at such an angle that you would only see one in real life, occlusion culling prevents you from seeing both at once).
Oh thank god! I’ve been looking for this comment for ten months!
@@RazzBeri1 I know this was a long time ago, but in case anyone stumbles across it somehow... The type of culling mentioned above is built into GPUs by default, and is required for things to appear correctly. If objects are rendered in the wrong order, they might all still need to be drawn which is really inefficient. The only reason to discuss occlusion culling is for efficiency, the programmer ordering things correctly or deciding something is too small on screen to bother drawing or out of the line of sight.
