Measuring time using time is how you know you’re doing some *real* math.
So let's look at the math: it's eight hours one way for one person playing Desert Bus. It's 1 hour per person, on a 8v8 mode, so it's 2 hours at minimum for one person. 2^8 is 256 hours so that's 256 cumulative hours per team, 512 hours total. It's basically 1 whole Desert Bus trip per 2 team members. Add in the fact that people can die, the flag can respawn back to base...
Time is not universally constant and is completely relative, this measurement gives me depression
I'm confused, 2^8? As a per-person variable wouldn't it just be just be 2x8? Since you're talking essentially about eight instances of the same two-hour trip?

you can tell how far away from the centre of the map they are because of how hard the first person weapon model's vertexes are glitching out
the floating point values got so high that the GPU is having trouble rendering each of the model's vertex positions accurately so it gets all wobbly

The max speed of the warthog is 78 mph.

Considering the road is almost to the maximum size of a map, and that the map is a square, then it would be 39 miles long and wide.

No. Because the warthog isn't actually going 70 in game
1,521 square miles. But that’s only visual. The killzone has a boundary once you go a bit into the desert. So, closer to 39 square miles of playable area, though still larger than that. That playable rectangle is probably close to 40 square miles (39 is the distance between bases).
Missed opportunity to have the road be in line with the Halo ring, so it looks like you're going around the whole circle.

Also content creation for 10000 * ring diameter square kms because, holy fuck that's way too much space for anything smaller than the population of Luxembourg to meaningfully fill with authored content before the next next console generation.

Why not line the road up with the ring so its literally infinite.
That might work with the physics engine.
sadly, likely impossible with Halo 2's original game engine. It wouldn't work with maps beyond a certain size because the floating point calculations for position and velocity start to break down. At its worst, it can violate basic laws of mathematics, as adding one to a FP32 well over a billion won't actually add anything. Basically, (location + 1 == location) would evaluate to true, so movement could become completely impossible without some way to buffer based on velocity and "expected location", but that's fairly advanced. If the map were singleplayer campaign, this could work as loading zones could be implemented so it just loads more map as it comes along and resets locations to be relative to the new loaded map, but because this is a multiplayer map, loading zones don't work without MMO-class chunk handling logic, which Bungie would never bother implementing because Halo 2 wasn't world of warcraft, everquest, or minecraft.

@@holdguard4624 I'm not really sure, but to put it in context, even Unreal Engine 4 needs to be hacked to accomplish this as it also uses a normal floating point system. Typically, the way you'd implement systems that are multiplayer-capable with this style of operation is by employing chunking and chunk-relative positioning, but that introduces complexity and slowdown in distance calculations. Plus, that can introduce jitter or miscalculations in a poorly coded chunking implementation, as if a collision body is in two or more chunks at the same time, the engine could get confused if not built to handle such a case.
@@holdguard4624 Actually, with modern 64-bit SIMD acceleration being standard across basically all gaming platforms now, 64-bit floating points probably have enough precision to represent that scale range faithfully without too much slowdown.

You could've made it that much more evil by making the road ever so slightly curved so whoever is driving has to constantly adjust and steer their warthog. Oh, and make the sand so hot that it deals tiny amounts of damage, and disable shield regen for good measure.

No that's not evil enough. Make it so that there are sections of road that are so paper thin that if you don't drive over them carefully you'll fall into a pit, die, and have to start over from the beginning. Also make forks in the road here and there. Once side continues the path, and the other teleports you back to start. Also make so that respawn is 2 minutes.

that trick, “swordflying” requires the target reticle to be red before you can switch to your sword and fly, so the enemies would have to be closer than 1 hour away to work.
