The Smallest Gun We've Ever Shot: Colt's 1908

  • The Sales Guys for ACW are back at it again with some historical firearms for you to enjoy. This week, we're talkin' Colt's Model 1908 "Vest Pocket". It's probably the smallest gun either Nick or Eli has shot, but it IS a Browning-designed pistol so it must be done. The .25 ACP, laughable in modernity, was at one time, a hot concealed carry caliber.

Untrue. Prior to WWI, carrying a handgun was incredibly common. As a testament to just how common, Iver Johnson used to sell cycle and revolver combos because stray dogs were such a problem for cycle riders. Carrying a gun was normal until about WWII.

I used to have a "Baby Bauer", which was a stainless remake of the Baby Browning. It was my backup gun for a few years, but .25ACP was about as expensive as .357 Magnum back then, which was surprise. Then one night, my partner and I responded to a shooting, during which a gentleman had been shot 6 times in the head with a .25ACP after having lost a pharmaceutical sales territory dispute. Scalp wounds bleed like crazy and we thought, "Oh, sh**, this cat's gonna die!" He was rushes to the hospital, where he was treated and released. I went out and bought a Chiefs Special for my backup after that, using the Baby Bauer as a deposit.

One of my favorites. Mine will only run Remington UMC through it reliably for what that’s worth. But with that ammo it’s been flawless for about 300 rounds. Awesome vid

I actually carry one once in a while. No one wants to be shot. The gun is actually pretty accurate out to 10 yards. Depending on ammo... the 25 acp is at least as powerful as a 22 lr. Which always cracks me up cause a lot of folks that laugh at the 25 acp but think a 22 is powerful enough. mine is very reliable... They were called 'Vest pocket' cause.... well... they were carried in the vest pocket or some other shallow pocket. The pockets of the day were even bigger than some of the silly 'tacticool' pants guys wear these days. I do absolutely agree that I would carry the little Colt before I would carry a glock tho... Two other mouse guns I will carry are the Savage 1907 in 32 (first double stack magazine that I know of ) This is what Bat Masterson shilled for as a sports writer.. They are complex but near 100% reliable and pretty accurate out to 25 yards or so. The other is my PPK in 32 auto. Can you say James Bond? LOL... in the books (if you have not read the books turn in your man card) Bond carried through most of em a 25 acp Berretta which he felt was powerful and accurate enough.. Later he was convinced to carry the PPK in .32 which he had to admit was more powerful and even more accurate (mine will do 3" groups at 25 yards from sandbags) Also.... with a little kitchen table gunsmith work the gun will function with PP magazines that hold 2 extra rounds but hang out the bottom a bit ... with my big hands that means 3 finger grip instead of two.

I’ve seen one at the LGS that a bought my 1903 pocket hammerless from
Though it wasn’t it good shape and it didn’t have a magazine

I’d carry one, but I’d only carry it in an actual vest pocket when wearing a suit, as a backup so something like a 1903

It would be incredible to see a company design a custom pocket pistol in this old styling but with modern reliability standards. Alchemy would be the perfect company to do this due to their aesthetic. Make it in .380 ACP and 9mm. Think Kahr MK9 but more closely resembles this Colt 1908.

These are usually pretty reliable unless the parts are worn or the magazine is bad. I have two of them. And three mags. One gun prefers the aftermarket magazine, weirdly. The other gun is in much worse condition and used to fail to cycle. Replacing the barrel seems to have fixed the issue. (The lugs were worn, changing the geometry of the chamber, is my best guess) The real problem with these is that the firing pin is the ejector. So, if you want to carry it chambered, then want to cycle out a live round to unload it... well, I'm not saying it's dangerous, but it might be.
