    • @auntiem873
      @auntiem873 6 лет назад +18

      She was emotionally abused as well by the studio heads who constantly told her she was fat and no one would love her unless she did what they said. Once broken they got her addicted to drugs and controlled her through them. The studios did that to as many actors (male and female) as they could.
      Studios controlled 100% of their actors lives. Who they would work with, when they worked, where they lived, what they wore, when to get married, when to have or not have kids. It was nothing short of slavery. Judy was a cash cow till the drugs took their toll and then they abandoned her. Shortly after that the whole contract system was abolished. She never recovered.

    This is definitely different from what my HS art teacher told me. He met Judy in a NY bar in the late 1960s, he was a bartender while attending college, and she was performing in the bar he worked at. He was initially told to stay away from her because he was known for being Star struck when meeting famous people (ex as Bette Davis, Myra Loy, and others). After her performance and the bar was ready to close for the night, Judy was still there waiting for someone to pick her up and bring her back to the hotel she was living in which was about an hour away. His boss was ready to throw Judy out and make her wait out in the freezing rain in New York in the dead of a February night where there where muggers and street thugs in the neighborhood. BUT my art teacher stepped in and offered to stay with Judy in the bar after hours until her ride came and that he would lock up afterwards. his boss acceptances his offer and my art teacher stayed with Judy in the bar after hours. He said that they ended up staying there together for 2 and a half hours. He made her dinner and gave her free drinks. Even though Judy was obviously tired, she still spoke to him and engaged with him and made him laugh. He said she was one of the funniest and most engaging people he ever met. When her ride finally came he escorted Judy to the car (because she was tired and he wanted to be a gentleman) and she gave him a kiss and hugged him and thanked him for looking after her.
    I was so jealous of my art teacher for getting to spend 2 1/2 hours alone with Judy and getting a hug and kiss from her. He told me it was one of the best moments in his life.

    As a huge fan of JG I’m reading this book right now. About 35% through it so far. Personally I think truth is better than fiction, because I don’t think lies really help any of us. In the book Stevie Philips describes candidly the things that happened --drug addiction is not pretty. In addition the assistant is very critical of herself, and doesn’t paint herself in the best light. (She came from nothing and suddenly had this big job working for Judy Garland, and she took it really seriously. She was 23 or so and Judy was 39.) She is very sympathetic towards Garland and describes how the agents treated Judy like a race car that they just kept filling with pill so she could make it around the track a few more times. The assistant tried to help Judy when she could, but it’s very obvious in the book so far that it was true chaos most of the time--one crisis leading to the next. I might have a different opinion when I’m done with the book , but what I see so far is something I’ve always thought about Judy Garland--her fame at such a young age, and the iron fist of the studio she worked for, really never let her develop any skill at making choices. Almost like a victim of abduction, she lived a life where someone else decided every single thing. That’s no way to live, but it was her life, and when you add addiction to it as well, this is the story you end up with. Not pretty. Very sad.

      Animal abuse, starving the girl, the Munchkins getting drunk every night, making actors ill from their makeup and then replacing them without prior notice, etc. MGM's slogan, "Art for art's sake," wasn't followed with the actors' well-being in mind. Louis B. Mayer was a jerk.

    Poor woman was chewed up and spit out by MGM. The things that company did to her and how cruelly even lots of cast mates consistently treated her led to her doing some horrible and sad things. Movie companies use actors until they’ve drained every ounce of happiness and livelihood from them. God rest Ms. Garland’s soul.

    MGM ruined her, giving her pills to wake up and pills to go to bed, she was on a diet of chicken broth, cigarettes and coffee. MGM made her work long and hard hours on set with out proper breaks..They criticises her looks telling her that her 98 pound and 4/2 slim figure was too fat and her nose was too turned up. At 12 she was signed at MGM but had been on stage singing and dancing with her sister starting at the age of 2. Her mom was the altament stage mom and cared more about fame and fortune than her own daughter health and wellbeing. She was a child fully supporting her family and became the soul bread winner. A role she was cast to play all her life. No wonder Judy had a drug problem she had been on them sense she was 12..Thank You LB Mayor for completely destroying a beautiful soul that only wanted love and acceptance in her life.
    I hope she found her rainbow and lives in her own version of OZ.
    Shame on this women for using Judy for her own fame and fortune, I hope her children fight her on the truth about there mother.
