- Showing how I "carry forward" the color of weft that I am not using at any one time in a two color "checkered", point twill pattern.
The thread is 8/4 carpet warp. There are 22 threads per pattern repeat. 15 epi.
Thank you so much for this video, I am fairly new to weaving, and decided to try and work with 2 colors now that I have mastered the one color weave, tried a few things and could not figure out how to keep the wefth from showing several rows above on the side, just tried this technique and am amazed the color change no longer shows at all. This way I do not have to cut yarn everytime I end a row to start a new one. I am practicing on a toy weave with heddle and beater which only weaves 6 inches, but a good size for scarfs. I also did a long piece which I will try and make clothes with it for a doll, my ultimate goal is to make my own clothes with my own weaved fabric. Once i achieve these few goals, will progress to either a rigid heddle loom or table loom. I have so far since Feb 2023 mastered the round looms and made clothing and lovey blankets with stuffed toy on it. I retired a few yrs back, so I now have plenty of time to do new things I never tried before. I had started earlier this yr with the toy weave, but warping it was such a chore I anbandoned the idea of it, but been watching you tube videos on how to warp weaving device and finally got the hang of it, so lovingcoming back to this type of loom. Your technique right here will help me so much with fewer tails to tuck in. 1 day at a time, never give up, put it aside for a while if need be, but never give up.

Yeah Terry, I understand pre-zactly what you are saying about "here's how I do it". And I will never have a great garden, but sure have enjoyed how yours grows.
This was a really interesting and simple solution to a problem I have encountered several times. MUCH better than cutting and splicing yarn every few picks. Love your videos and love your weaving. Thanks so much for putting them on RUclips:)
Thanks for your kind comment. I realize it wont be as easy if one does not have a castle on the loom like I do, but I do think it is a pretty good way to keep both weft threads working.

On the loom, on the walls...that’s some beautiful weaving.
I will definitely be using this technique on an upcoming tartan pattern. So many color changes, and it'll even be a lot of the same colors- Brown, orange and yellow.

What is the tool you are using (looks like a ruler clamped on to your weaving) I gather it helps to get straight edges?

Thanks for the great explanation. I like the extra edge it gives your item. I do like 8/4 for towels and have a bath towel of that thread. I love this twill pattern, very pretty.

Good video but I am new so can you tell me more about that thread running down the side is it only one one side and did you put it in a heddle or just through the reed thanks for any help
The thread on the side is a "floating selvage", it is not through a heddle. Floating selvages are one on each side. Not needed for "plain weave", but quite helpful with twill, or in this case point-twill.

Hi there 😊 how many colours can you carry up in this way? If you were using 3 or 4 colours, would you do the same then? And if not, how would you do it?
I'm new to weaving. And the first thing I made, was a 3 coloured tartan pattern. And I have a probleme withe my ends where I finished of and started a new colour. I cut them off at the end of the last row, and weaved the snip alongside the new colour, to lock it in place, but now it's off the loom, you see every change, as small fuzzy warn ends poking out half a millimeter, and if I cut it flush, it just pops up on the front side.
When weaving tartan, if I only have to go a short distance like 6 or 8 picks, I have carried 2 colors forward. But that is about as many or as far as I would go when doing tartan.
I just wanted to ask you what yarn and colors did you use. i am beginning weaver and I just love seeing the color combinations.
These colors are so soft and beautiful - not just orange and brown, but balanced in their softness of color.

The thread is 8/4 maysville carpet warp. Colors . . .I don't remember exactly, orange obviously, and a medium brown, but I have forgotten which one. I bet you could find it in the color choices on the Woolery.com Web site.

Are you doing the dish towel exchange again? I DO hope so. The fall colors here in CT were better than last year, but not the best I have seen. Too many damaged trees. I have some 8/2 carpet warp for a second set or rag rugs. Let us know how using this year for dish towels comes out.
Hi Barbara ! No this is not for the dish towel exchange, I haven't done that for a couple years now, and don't even know if it is still going. It was fun to do when I was doing it. I'm doing these just as a way to use up some excess carpet warp.
How would you do this with 7 color Tartan without the salvage carrying all 7 colors up one side?
I just would not carry it forward.
I appreciate the method but I don't find it works so well, because the yarn not being used causes loops at the slevedge, unless I really fiddle with it and pull it taut after a few picks so it's not looping.... but instead of having my nice razor sharp selvedges as usual, it's more wavy. :/
