Anybody gonna talk about how crazy that piano solo was?? Starting in F and modulating up like it was nothing what a group of freaks you guys are! (in the best way possible of course) Great recording Chad.
Love giving the bass player Dan Chmielinski a break at 3:40 so he could have new skin grafted on his fingers before he had to come back in at 5:22 (LOL!). Superb job as always CLB Quartet. Fabulous interpretation of Donna Lee.
this is what I call pushing the limits of human musical performance. amazing not just from an athletic perspective talking about level of physical difficulty but from a musicality one too... this is what busting a tune wide open is.
Nitpicking here, but more evidence points to Miles Davis having written Donna Lee than Charlie Parker. Miles was 17 days shy of his 19th birthday so still a relative unknown compared to Parker. Record company put Parker’s name on the record, probably to try and sell more copies. Miles claimed having written Donna Lee, but Parker never did claim it. Weird story.... still amazing playing!
For one thing, strictly musically speaking it is suspiciously outside the style of Miles Davis and sounds much more like Parker- also Miles Davis is notorious for claiming several tunes written by others to be his own ( Blue in Green written by Bill Evans comes to mind). Just saying
@@leobrahmachari6611 and yet, Donna Lee is awkward on alto, compared to Tenor and trumpet. Birdisms (as amazing technically as he was) are often things that feel good on alto to play fast. Most of his heads just flow nicely. What other tunes come to mind that Miles seems claim falsely were his own? I hadn't heard that.
Thanks for watching the video! We really enjoyed producing this series. Yes, it is commonly accepted that Miles Davis composed this piece, but legally the composition is credited to Charlie Parker by the publishing company, Atlantic Music Corporation, so we credited both Bird and Miles.
@@rickyvm4457 Solar was written by Chuck Wayne, original name "Sunny". Four was probably (?) written by Eddie Vinson, an alto saxophonist. Blue In Green was written by Bill Evans, composition attributed to Miles. I think Dig also and maybe Nardis? Don't know.
You may be right, but Miles also claimed authorship for Blue in Green even though Bill Evans apparently wrote it. I think Davis' estate later acknowledged as much.

Awesome as usual. Although I must say the drummer, bass player, and piano player should be wearing their masks. It'd be irresponsible to not say anything
You have made me fall in Love with Jazz . It was introduced in my life as study material and I never really got a chance to celebrate and enjoy this artform. I m learning to play Donna Lee from this video of yours and having a blast. Thank you for your honest playing. Love from India!
Man with the lockdown watching that video makes me feel so good! I miss playing jazz in jam sessions, communicating, being in sync with the other cats and having fun together so much, so seeing you guys having fun hits hard!
It is so great, for me, to so enjoy right now what and how well you guys are playing right now; I love history, heritage and "all that jazz"; but, sometimes it is about culmination and the absolute beauty, joy and mastery in the moment, and you guys are givin' it bucket loads. Man, I'd give every one of you guys a big ol' music appreciation hug. Thanks so much for being exactly who you are. We can all thank our lucky stars for you. ⭐😀💛
what's great about this is the fun character in Chad's solo. Not just that he can blow the changes - already impressive - but that he makes it smile. BRAVO!
I genuinely disliked it Dude has skills but his solo was too long and his style is taxing to listen to and obnoxious. I don't care for his tone either.
Thanks Chad. i'd never hear something like this. Where i live i dont have the chance to understand Jazz the way you make me feeling it. Maybe here nobody understand it but i do.
Sounds great and you are really spitting a lot of notes. Bending notes . You are why I subscribed to your channel. You are a superior saxophonist. Thanks for sharing.
Love Charlie Parker and Chad’s take on this tune. So much to learn. Is this after the 2 weeks hiatus? Frightening. 😩Love these ‘gigs’ so please keep ‘em coming!🎷👍
I love the fact that, even though this is bop, Chad isn't shy about throwing in the root (or beating a dead horse with it lol) or a bluesy pentatonic lick harkening back to some Motown here and there.
I blow an alto sax, don’t know a thing about notes or reading music, I play by ear, I’m a beginner on the alto sax, love Charlie Parker. This guy is great to, doing Donna lee
I keep coming back to this performance...... it is so good. Too good so I am reporting you to the FBI. We need an investigation to follow the key changes by the wonderful pianist .... Someone must take responsibility for this incredible rendition ..... I love it.
Chad as another tenor player, you know the patterns, the theory, and, the hours of time in the practice room. Plain and simple. YOU ARE BAD! THANK YOU!
His dynamics are so great, you really hear it in the first few seconds

Great recording Chad.
And the bass player just went right along with him....
that modulation got my off my seat!!
I believe that is the great Bay Stater Steve Feifke.
Yeah was dope!! and loved the little Duke Ellington he threw in there

I was like. Is that giant steps.
@@topiliski1497 I know! Same here.
10:18 the drummer looks at the bass and goes "do it"
bass laughs
5 seconds later absolute madness the bass player shreads that melody.
Man it’s been years now and I still keep coming back to this. Insane. Just incredible.
Thanks for reminding us that blues comes first.
Outrageous ..... groove squared. Perfect amount of toppings on the pizza.
Sometimes you see the first solo and think "wow, next guy won't be able to match that." They were toe to toe. Amazing stuff.
The torch has been passed and it's in great hands. Fantastic job, guys!
man shut up... on god. what is it with you cats
2:44 was the epitome of use the melody 🔥🔥🔥🔥
That sax solo kills it.
Im a saxophonist myself but my god. The licks he uses were phenomenal.
Божественно
i always find myself coming back to this video because of just how satisfying it is to listen to

Bird's genius is that he made all the technical stuff sound completely musical all the time - because his ears were in charge, not his fingers.
So what your really saying is that Charlie Parker played his music the way he did because he could.
So so so so gooooood
