I was very lucky to have met Paul when I drove him in a limo sedan ( Luxury Car service ) from Brisbane to the Gold Coast. The drive was very memorable and he is one amazing guy. We spoke all the way down and I also got to shake that famous hand of his ( yeap that grip can be hard lol ). He was a inspiration to me to do better and watching this video reminded me of that day I drove him and that I need to do better.
It's really great that medicine and engineering are so advance now But with that price tags It will be hard for ordinary people with no that big income to come near to this technology
You bring up VERY good points. Without good insurance or having the ability to afford these devices, it's tough for most people. But I'm a hardcore optimist, and see these devices getting cheaper over time.
Sadly it is inaccessible to almost all lower income people, especially in developing countries. So while I'm glad the technology exist, it is also frustrates me that it widens the disparity between the wealthy and poor.
Arian hmn You have to start somewhere. In today's society that somewhere is selling things to people with high income, after all development costs a lot of money. It will be affordable for a lot of people in the future, sadly that will still take some time and research.
"Your biggest weakness can become your biggest strengths" That is true on so many levels, I hate speaking, I have a stutter and it causes me to fail with words, but I keep being outgoing, I push myself to talk to others, and its paying off, I'm more relaxed when talking to total strangers now, compared to about 3 years ago, I would not stand up and present to a group.
"Nearly dead, I had to swim back to my safety boat missing a hand and a part of my leg through a pool of my own blood where my buddies were waiting to give me first-aid and a cold one."
This guy's amazing! Huge inspiration!! Strong mental and physic of course!! And it's not another one of these "motivational video" with a music background and the same voice over, it's actually a real inspirational vlog ! Loved it!!
A "Gimbal" or a "Ball Mount" could be easily attached to the prosthetic arm that he used for the pull-ups. Of course it would take some time to refine the design and functionality. But it would be well worth the effort!
I think motorized 3 axis gimbal technology already helps people, there’s a a stabilized spoon that helps people who have shaky hands eat. And I bet it wouldn’t be too difficult to get a 1/4 20 screw on the end of that prosthetic and get a dji pano on there, all focus and camera settings could be changed with the app in his phone!
Whoa! That is truly one of the most amazing stories I've ever heard. Hats off to Paul for overcoming a horrific tragedy that would have destroyed most of us, psychologically, and for reinventing himself with a whole new and very exciting life. You are, indeed, a BAMF! Awesome episode, Casey! Definitely one of your best-ever inspirational vlogs. Thanx
That guy will never understand how much motivation I just got from watching this. Paul thank you for being you n keep killing it my dude 👊🏼 you’re more of a inspiration then you’ll ever know
Hey Casey, I just wanted to let you that the way you dedicate a whole episode of your vlog to different people and their stories is just amazing. You have had many great people with moving stories on your vlog, and the way you let them tell their own story is outstanding. You don't just tell us about a guy who lost his arm and leg to a shark, you actually get the guy to your studio and let him tell his own story, so we ( your audience) get to know him. Please continue doing this. :) I know this comment will get lost somewhere between the other thousands of comments, but I really hope Casey finds it.
I had the great honour of being taught to Dive by Paul and the boys at the navy dive school back in 2010. An inspirational and top bloke, thanks for being part of my journey to my love of diving. Steele
Amazing story, Paul is another true example that there are obstacles in life. But do not allow the obstacles to turn into excuses! Thanks Casey for sharing the story!
President Franklin D. Roosevelt lost use of both of his legs, and still became the President of the United States. Sometimes that's what it takes for people to make the greatest use of themselves. Thankfully though, you can still choose to live life to the fullest however you are!
man this video came at such a right time it just hit me right through the feels, if this bamf can do such amazing things after losing his hand and leg I'm sure a few torn tendons and nerves aren't going to stop me. thank you Casey and Paul.
I was born with a Brachial Plexus injury which caused my right arm and hand to be paralyzed. I went through a lot of surgery to get to a point where my arm and hand are somewhat useable. Paul is honestly such an inspiration, there's time where I've thought "Do I really need a right hand, a prosthetic would be better" but after hearing his story and his thoughts on losing his hand, I regret ever thinking it. I also LOVED the fact that you brought up the camera struggle, I've been a photographer for seven years and having a non-functioning right hand makes camera operation a pain, but I've learned ways to live with it and am happy with how I can capture my work one-handed. One-day camera companies will make it easier. Thanks again Casey for sharing his story and continuously inspiring us everyday!
Hey Casey, I'm a fairly new subscriber. Just a quick shout out to say I'm obsessed with your insane editing skills and ability to captivate. So so impressive. You truly seem like a genuine person. Keep up the great work and I'm very happy for your success. You deserve it
I know this vlog is several years back now but I've been binging the whole lot of them again for fun and came back to this...and it still makes me laugh that Erin was the ONLY ONE to do actual pull-ups. As in, full extension of the arms for every rep. As strong as Paul is, and I'm not doubting him one bit or talking shit, he only did one full pull-up throughout that entire friendly competition. So Erin did the most real pull-ups out of anyone that day. Props to her for knowing correct form and not short-cutting the workout. Again, not shitting on any of them. All are far more successful and well-rounded than I happen to be at the moment. Just a technicality that always gives me a chuckle.
Paul deserves a Huuuuggeee respect....He's a real example , some people just complain all the time....That guy doesn t and he's happy and smiling , and still want to do things of his life. Thx for sharing Casey. Fred ( France )
Brilliant video. What an inspiration. And for decades I have been wondering why haven't camera companies been commercialising cameras for lefties or folks like him? As for the logistics of getting such a video done, Mr Neistat, hats off to you; I am into travel and event logistics, I know it was not easy for you. Bravo for the video.
A lot of technology is unfortunately inaccessible to disabled people, and often requires either rebuilds or special models which can be pretty expensive. I guess the reason why is because the production of it might be more labor intensive and costly than what it would make in profit, which still sucks. And a lot of the times the needs of people who aren't 100% able bodied are just forgotten about, even when it wouldn't require too much effort to make it more accessible, like most video games does not allow people to easily remap controls to their specific needs.
Yes. Right. As you said, it still sucks. Everything is driven by profit. If only they could offset some of that profit to make it more accessible for the "other".
He's the definition of strength and no doubt he has a great support system. When you're surrounded by the right people you can accomplish anything! They will always pull you up when you're down. They will help you succeed in life.
I am an amputee - lost my left leg in a paragliding accident.. More about this in my vlog on my channel. PAUL! You inspire me to do more than I already have since loosing my leg - thanks for the stoke dude!
“I’m hard on prosthetics as what you are on everything” - Bwaaaaa ha ha ha! So true. I love how Casey handles new packages, his boosted board, basically everything that is robust enough to handle the rough test. 😂
So one of the main reasons I genuinely envy Casey is because with his success and internet clout, he gets to interview people like this. A bucket list item of mine, right now, is to interview Philippe Petit and ask him one question I've always wanted to ask him since watching "Man on Wire". If I were Casey, I think I would have an easier time getting them in the interview room. So I just have to sell myself better. But I'm not good at selling myself. lol.
That is awesome. That is like I tell my kids that you can see the glass as half empty or half full, it does not change the glass or how much is in, it just changes how you see it, and optimism is the best way to live. This guy gets it. Best day & Best wishes to you & yours.

K9 sidrat Nah. Just a great story about overcoming. That's all.
K9 sidrat you are just hating Casey, no matter what he does. So fuck off
Yup, if only those words were really true. Some things just can't be overcome.
His body hardwares cost more then a new Spanky car. So Ironman parts does cost millions.

The shock he overcame/prevented during the attack, just unbelievable.

A "Gimbal" or a "Ball Mount" could be easily attached to the prosthetic arm that he used for the pull-ups. Of course it would take some time to refine the design and functionality. But it would be well worth the effort!
Yeah maybe a gimbal that levels out automatically.
