I think what separates Ghost from the rest of the Satanic pack for me is that the music is very reminiscent of actual Christian church music at times. Lots of Catholic and Evangelical tones in their that I remember from my younger days. They combine it all with an Occult Rock style for the modern era. Their sound is their biggest trademark because nobody else really plays like them as far as I know.

I'm a new listener to ghost and a person of a religious background (not considerably religious at all anymore though..) as well as a person deeply interested in the occult. One thing I noticed after seeing Ghost just once live, is that they seem to perform and write music out of a form of "satire". I don't think they are truly satanists (celebrators of rebellion and individualism), rather they are calling out the corruption and insanity of fundamentalism. They make a damn good show and they don't take themselves too seriously, something I wish most would do well to remember in the black metal world.

    • @thegillman777
      @thegillman777 7 лет назад +98

That is correct. When they give phone interviews (not in character), they have stated they are not Satanists in real life. They are definitely doing a satirical spin on the rigidity of belief systems, and the corruption in organized religion.

And finally, the pace of his speech. That's actually the way he speaks, even in Swedish. Different people speak in different paces, nothing weird about that. The interviewer for instance doesn't speak particularly fast either, so I really don't get your point.

@@SwedishWarGoat. I get what you're saying, but trust me, North American english speakers will know his accent is European right away. Scandinavians especially have unique accents. Sometimes the lines are blurred, if they spend a lot of time with global culture (like Pewds) or are students in North American universities (I know some Finns once). All that being said, the main singer of Ghost does sound more American-ish when giving casual interviews without the costume, so the Papa accent is part of the act I think.

I hear it every day, and to be honest it kind of bothers me cause I think about it all the time. But not with this guy, yes I can hear he has an accent but barely. And it's definitely not the R's. I like the fact that some ghouls are spiritual and religious while others aren't. Each interview is so different from the next. Like they hate religion, but in the acknowledgment that we know nothing of the unknown, you can't dismiss something you cant prove or disprove. Im not a atheist by any means, but I love what Ghost is accomplishing in the Metal scene. Without being so generic "satanic" and corny about it like black metal bands are with their demon makeup and surfaced satan lyrics. Ghost is more religious than people realize, maybe even themselves to, because they want there to be a salvation for all the ill in this world, regardless of which kingdom its in.

The fact that this band is getting people talking about God, joy, individualism and levity shows to me that their message is nuanced and not sinister. They are like Rammstein in that sense, whereby they tackle dark, scary subject matter but give an uplifting feeling and message, whilst adding in humour. I believe in God and I just think that music should tackle the darkest areas of our existence as humans and try to make people focus on lifes positives.
'Square Hammer' to me, lyrically, is about making peace with yourself about your personal flaws (your 'devil') but accepting your short comings as a human but still making the best out of life. Just my interpretation 😁

Learning the lead off Square Hammer has been fun and love how they incorporate traditional church music elements into their songs. So glad my son introduced me to Ghost!!

If not for my now adult kids, I wouldn’t have heard most of the music that I love now :)
But as for Ghost, I found them myself, and plan on sharing some of the less blasphemous songs with one of my daughters…
I understand that Tobias is writing these lyrics because he does not like the Catholic Church or any religion that calls itself Christian, because of the control. I understand that, as I came out from the catholic system.
There is no God to be found in them. But at age 27, the God of the Bible revealed Himself to me!! I knew that Jesus Christ was my Saviour, so I repented of my many sins, and the blood that Jesus shed for me washed away all of my sin, and made me clean.
I had never felt peace in my entire life until that time, so it was an amazing day for me! I can face every challenge and hurdle with Him by my side. He took my alcohol problem from me in an instant after I cried out to Him, and has been restoring my broken soul ever since…
I had no intention of sharing all of that with you, so I hope it has actually given you some food for thought.
God bless you and your family 🙏

I've attended both Christian and Catholic schools before I switched over to public for high school. I actually encountered bullies in both the Christian and Catholic schools but never had that problem in public school, which I found pretty ironic. In our church one of the priests actually abused the nuns. I've met a Satanist that was nicer and more genuine than a number of Christians I've met. Its kinda strange how the world outside of the Christian/Catholic faiths was more welcoming to me where I was always taught it was supposed to be the other way around.

The way I see it, a band that makes "groovy"/"funky" music, for lack of a better description, like Ghost, is closer to being satanic than any other black metal band because the "danger" of Satan (if you're a religious person) is that he is seductive, he makes you like him, trust him. In that sense Ghost is the only true satanic band that I know of because they make melodic music that can appeal to a great many people whilst spreading Satan's "message".

Depends on the sect of Satanism, depends on the approach you have. Meaning that not all Satanic Ideologies share that perspective. If you going through the Christian perspective then sure. If you are going through a Luciferian perspective that is incorrect. It depends on the path they are following.

I know other people do this to but it's really noticeable with him. I don't like him and I also don't dislike him. lol

Right. Instead of the interviewer pitching the band member a specific (hypothetical) idea, he could have asked something more open-ended like "compared to other heavy metal bands, what is Ghost's disposition to Satanic themes?"

I was talking to a friend the other day about music we both enjoy. He is into lots of genres, rock, Punk, indie and some metal. My choices were mainly all rock, but when I mentioned ghost he was like 'but they belive in satan, isn't that against your religion to even talk to people who follow satan (btw I'm Catholic)?'. I told him three things:
    1. Not all the band believes in satan.
    2. And even if they all did, why would that effect my music choice? If the music is good, I'll listen to it and the band are a solid band.
    3. I can talk to satanists, it would just be a bit awkward.

How do hardcore metalheads feel about Ghost? I'm a casual fan of metal, and I love these guys, but I can see how their catchy well produced style could turn off "true" fans of metal. Plus the fact that they are doing everything with irony and humor (which I love) I could see making hardcore fans pissed.
What do you deep metal fans think? Ghost, lame or awesome?

Terms like "metalhead", "true(TM) metal" etc are just subjective labels. People describe themselves and music as this or that, so they can compete in a ridiculously irrelevant marketplace of empty concepts. In the end, it doesn't matter. Here's a band that writes and produces music the way the band wants to. You either enjoy it or you don't. And just how insecure does one have to be to be offended, feel threatened and go on endless debates about a fucking *label*? Ironic, coming from fans of genres that put a lot of emphasis on strength and independence in their culture. lol, nope, you are a weakling if you do that. One with an inflated sense of entitlement to judge the work of others while they themselves do nothing but bitch about descriptions from the lazy comfort of their mom's basements :)

my favorite song from them is "If You Have Ghost" and the reason being is because I often ask people a question after listening to the song for the first time. I ask them "who is ghost to you?" ghost to me is my best friend and his son (closest thing to family) and then my ex fiance and his son. this life. my own well being. that is ghost to me. it really makes people think.

I really think Ghost's best is yet to come. They're smart, they're great musicians and gifted songwriters. They use the whole ''devil''/''cult'' thing'' cleverly, it's multi-dimensional. Some listen to Ghost solely because they think they are listening to a devil worshipping band, while others listen to Ghost because they understand what the band is doing and why. At the end of the day... they don't worship the devil but they do write insightful songs that make you think. oh and by the way... anyone who disagrees with me is clearly an idiot ;-) Have a great day everyone!

For many of us, the music and lyrics say what we have wanted to say out loud for quite some time.
Also true that the response I experience does come from an intuitive and instinctive place inside me. I understand completely what he says about his beliefs. I both appreciate and respect his willingness to express this in a public interview.
