I read my first Maigret a few months ago, the morbidly titled "Maigret and the Headless Corpse", and I really enjoyed it for all the same reasons you said. The atmosphere, the little observations, mysterious characters, the tactile setting of dusky Parisian canalside bistros... And sure the mystery get logically wrapped up but it's the day to day existence and personable moments that stuck with me most. I'll be keeping an eye out more Maigret for sure. I didn't realise Chess Story was so short! Will have to find that as well it sounds very interesting
The Chess Story sounds fabulous. I’ve just started reading Maigret. I picked eight up at a charity shop. I enjoy them too. I read Diary of a Nobody for Victober last year. Thought it was fun but totally agree that it tailed off at the end. Great wrap up 😊
Yes, I did a mention of Maigret books and was surprised that lots of American book tubers had not heard of him. Definitely worth a read if you like Agatha Christie. Very atmospheric of France. Best wishes Aaron.
I like the sound of all of the shorties you've read. I've read 2 poetry collections and a fiction that I sadly didn't enjoy. Just started a Psalm for the wild built as my next shorty, really keen to read this one 😊
I'm really glad you enjoyed Chess Story. I really need to get to some of the Maigret books at some point. I've had one sitting around on my shelves for ages!
I'm familiar with Maigret because of the two series I've watched -- the one with Bruno Cremer, which ran on MHz, and the British version with Michael Gambon. I enjoyed them both so much that I had to get the series' DVDs. Now I've started collecting the books:)
I did google to see some of the tv series, there's even one with Rowan Atkinson, which I have to say seems odd casting. Cremer is what I picture in my head as I saw some youtube clips of him and it seems great.
I loved Chess Story too (or just 'Chess' as my copy was titled), I definitely want to read more Zweig too. I agree that Diary of a Nobody petered out a bit in the second half, I ended up rather 'meh' on it. I keep thinking about trying some Maigret but I never know where to start, I'm glad this one was decent!
I've never read the witches series, only Wee Free Men, I need to start on those! I still haven't decided between Cymbeline and King Lear, I'm going to read one or the other this month.
Chess sounds really interesting - especially the psychological aspect. I have read some Zweig .. can't remember what though? 🤔Glad you're enjoying the shorties! Interested to hear your thoughts on Larkin once you're done! Bert
Ooh the chess story sounds great! I’m enjoying getting stuck into shorty September too. Poetry is a weird one. I always feel there’s more pressure on the reader to fully understand it in a way that doesn’t exist so much with fiction writing but that shouldnt be the case. Have a great week Aaron!
@@AaronReadABook Well, that's pretty awesome! I recently saw in another video where someone had picked up a whole bundle of them at a thrift shop. I wish I had shops like that around here...
Nice batch of books! I may have to check out Maigret as I’ve never heard of him, but the Agatha Christie similarities sound fun. I have never learned to play chess! How old were you when you learned? The chess book and Diary of a Nobody also sound really interesting. I ended the wrap up 😊
The Chess Story sounds so good! I might check out Diary of a Nobody as well. I wasn’t planning on doing Shorty September but, some of my Indie/Self Pub reads are really short so I think I’ll count those!

Glad to hear that at least one over Maigret has those elements! Chess Story packs a lot into a small book, well worth it.

Yeah it's always exciting but slightly worrying when you find a new detective, especially when there are 74 more books 😁

Yes, I only heard about him the last few years too.

I really liked Psalm but not as much as her Wayfarers series, but I think it might be more up your alley than wayfarers.
I'm really glad you enjoyed Chess Story. I really need to get to some of the Maigret books at some point. I've had one sitting around on my shelves for ages!
I'm definitely going to seek out more of Stefan Zweig. Maigret are well worth a go and if you hate it at least it's short 😁

Apparently anywhere will do with Maigret. I have also seen it published as The Royal Game.
I’ve read two shorties - both Shakespeare (esque). As You Like It, & Pratchett’s Wyrd Sisters as a play. Currently reading the Aeneid and loving it.
I've never read the witches series, only Wee Free Men, I need to start on those! I still haven't decided between Cymbeline and King Lear, I'm going to read one or the other this month.

Other people who are less chess-obsessed seem to enjoy the Zweig book too so I'm glad. Hard one to top for me.

Yes, I agree, maybe I am trying too hard with poetry.
I enjoyed your video, Aaron. I think I would like to read some Simenon. Thanks!
Thanks Pat! The good thing is, if you like him, there are 74 more to read!

the diary of a nobody sounds like an old timey seinfeld lol
It is like a prototype sitcom. I kept thinking it was like a UK one called One Foot In The Grave

I learned chess during COVID, so I was quite old 😂 I hadn't really heard of Maigret until quite recently either it's odd.
I have Chess Story - might have to move it up the list.
It's great and done in an hour or two!

@@Maeve_Ever_Books yeah it's quite an easy event to combine with other things! I am probably going to throw in a Shakespeare play for Shaketember
@@AaronReadABook Oh! I should do that too!
Never read any of the Maigret novels, I used to love the Michael Gambon series in the 90's
I never saw it, the french TV show looks good too.
