📚 - haven't read any of these, just letting you know I was here!

My favorite Barbara Pym book, you ask? Every one of them! Each one has been read, reread and adored at least seven or eight times each. Okay, heading for another go at Some Tame Gazelle - can’t get enough of that caterpillar in the cheesy cauliflower!

@@deezimmermann6004 I've still got quite a few left to read, I've got two more on the way. Some Tame Gazelle I definitely enjoyed 😁

The Vicor's wife with that cat sounds great, lol. I've never read Barbara Pym, but when you said she has a talent with creating humor in mundane things; I love that and I will keep her on my radar. I agree, it does seem a bit unique that there are so many books in that Maigret series that are are deep and introspective as opposed to quick, light page turners! The Saffon book sounds fun. I've only ever made saffon buns at Christmastime, so hopefully the little tin of saffron I have doesn't go bad too quickly since I only use it once a year, lol. I also love that you ate a whole quiche when you were hung over. Confort food! :):)

I had some saffron delivered today, it looks like it will keep forever. Do you make the Swedish Christmas buns? That's what I'm thinking of making with it. I advise everyone to try Pym, she is wonderful.

Never tried Pym, but loved your description, especially the cats 😻
Roald Dahl's memoirs sounded really interesting. I was so scared of fantastic Mr fox as a kid (he gets trapped underground) that I still can't read it 😂 I think The Twits was probably my favourite. The kids have all of his books on CD, but we don't have a CD player to listen to them anymore!

@@YourTrueShelf I forgot that my primary school had a cassette of Fantastic Mr Fox and it was our only audiobook so I've heard the beginning of that a lot. Pym is great, she loved cats so they feature often.

It always amazes me how many similar stories there are for now well known women authors that echo the same as the one you shared on Pym, with them just having a sudden blacklisting more or less. I desperately need to get to reading her this year, and I'm all for a cat lady.

@@ReadBecca she was old fashioned which didn't fit in with what was going on in the 60s and 70s I guess. But still, she is great and there's no real excuse for it.

Loved this. I have Going Solo, I must read it. Having picked up nine Maigret books, I also read another one this week. I’m enjoying them but, you’re right, the crimes seem to be solved around him rather than him having too much to do with it 😊

You should definitely try a saffron recipe. If you’ve never had it, the quality won’t be terribly important. You should be able to buy a couple of grams for £10-20. (So merely a few flakes of gold, lol.)
    Enjoy!

Maybe you should try one of the Maigrets where he is working from his office, interacting with his staff. There is more an emphasis on the actual crime or mystery (though you can't get away from the psychology, usually analyzing the suspect).

A work party on a Wednesday! Not good planning 😕😉 I’ve only read Excellent Women but Kelly and I are going to tackle Some Tame Gazelle next year, have you read that one? My two Pym enthusiast friends both named that one as a good place to start.

Yes that is her first book and it's quintessential Pym. My favourites are Excellent Women, Janes and Prudence, and Crampton Hobnet. But really not much between any of them.

Some people on goodreads said this is the worst one they've read, but they are enjoyable anyway. They are very odd, lots of cut off dialogue, they feel like French new wave detective fiction.

    • @genteelblackhole
      @genteelblackhole 2 месяца назад

@@AaronReadABook Hmm, that makes me wary - I don’t much like French New Wave cinema, honestly. I love Jean-Pierre Melville though, who was a precursor to New Wave and did detective films, so if it’s more like that and less like Goddard, I’ll probably be okay.

Wait, you haven't read any fiction from Dahl? They are so bizarre. I read so many of those out loud to my kids and sometimes they were just too weird for me. Make sure to read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (and skip the sequel 😅)

I've actually just remembered we had the audiobook of Fantastic Mr Fox at my school but I'm not sure we ever listened to the whole thing. I have seen lots of films though.
