Great wrap up. I love Discworld. I can’t believe footnotes gave such a big spoiler in Wives and Daughters, how annoying. I love the variety in your reading matter 😊

I'm so gutted about the wolf den!! I didn't find it bleak, and the audiobooks are brilliant. The second one was so so tense. I need to start the third one ASAP.
I love non fiction on audio.
Sorry to hear you've injured your neck and hope you can get back to running soon 🏃
Need to read more Gaskell, I've only read north and south which I loved.

@@YourTrueShelf Gaskell is great and all her books are completely different in style, it's odd. The Wolf Den is unrelenting bleakness to me 😂 nothing goes their way. I'm sure if I read the other two it would but this first book is just an introduction.

I'm so glad you enjoyed Equal Rites too. I was pleasantly surprised by it too - I had initially skipped it and gone straight to Wyrd Sisters, assuming as you did that it would be weaker. But actually I love it. I do love Wyrd Sisters even more, but it's still a delight!
That spoiler in the footnotes of Wives and Daughters sounds SO annoying!

Definitely a big step up from the Rincewind books.

Great stuff, Aaron! That footnote in Wives and Daughters sounds really annoying. I don't think it's one I'll get to, as I found the TV adaptation so frustrating. But maybe I'll come round to it after reading some more Gaskell...

I watched a tiny bit of the tv adaptation, but not much. I actually had to edit swearing out of this video because im still livid about that footnote.

I see Prachett I hit like.
Equal Rites is good, it’s not him fully in his stride but he’s getting there. It also contains one of my favourite Prachett gags: “The lodgings were on the top floor next to the well-guarded premises of a respectable dealer in stolen property because, as Granny had heard, good fences make good neighbours”
The witches books get much better with introduction of Nanny Ogg.

@@TheBookThing is Ogg in the next one? Yeah this still had some great gags.

I’ve been tempted to try the Discworld series as everyone I hear talking about seems to love it. As for The Wolf Den, I can relate about the miserable characters as I just finished Frankenstein yesterday 🫠. It sounds like a good premise though, but I agree, a little bit more of a journey would be nice, especially if it’s sad throughout.
Ugh, the spoilers in the footnotes?? That’s awful. I’ve also learned the hard way never to read the introductions. It’s like they don’t think spoilers apply for classics. I still would like to try Gaskell. I’ve had Cransford on my shelf which I think I would like. What was your favorite Gaskell? Sorry to hear about your neck and good luck with your marathon 🎉

      @AaronReadABook  2 месяца назад +1

The more I think about it the less I can separate Gaskell's three novels I've read. I would suggest North and South as the best starting point though. Terry Pratchett was the first author I ever loved so I will always be very fond of him, you should try a Discworld definitely, I would recommend Guards Guards as a good first one!

All the death ones I've read have been great, and he is always funny when he pops up in other books. You should read Hogfather at Christmas, it's a death Christmas book! Theres also a good TV adaptation of it.

It's one of those series where you can dip in, though, as there are loads of standalone and miniseries in there. It's also one of the only series I know where everyone tells you not to start at the beginning. I have tons to go 🙂
