    RUclips really compresses dark videos but I still enjoyed researching and making this one! Bataille’s philosophy is utterly bizarre but so perfect for this game. If you want to see more videos like this I hope you’ll subscribe!

    Does the lead character's name (Oswald Mandus) remind anyone else of that Percy Bysshe Shelley poem "Ozymandias"?
    "I met a traveller from an antique land,
    Who said-“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
    Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
    Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
    And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
    Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
    Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
    The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
    And on the pedestal, these words appear:
    My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
    Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
    Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
    Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
    The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

    Finally, a good analysis of second Amnesia. Analysed not through marxist perspective. Suprisingly, most popular analysises of second Amnesia are made through this red perspective. Maybe it shows a good picture for regular marxist narrative about how capitalism is bad but it lacks of depth and doesn't give answer for several questions.

    This is the analysis that this game needed. I remember hating it when it came out because it wasn't like Dark Descent. Now, replaying it as an adult, I have picked up all kinds of minute details and subtext that is just so incredibly well thought out.

    That was a very interesting take on Amnesia a Machine for pigs. I enjoy philosophy and love reading others thoughts and ideas. I'll definitely take a deeper look into Bataille's works. Really, its always a pleasure to see philosophy ingrained into videogames. My favorite example being Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism in Bioshock.

    Now that's a crossover I didn't know I needed. Makes complete sense too! If it weren't for Deathspell Omega, the French avant-garde black metal icons, I would've probably went a year or two more before stumbling upon Bataille.
    As it turns out, Plebeian Grandstand, another French avant-garde black metal band, is highly influenced by Bataille, to a point of naming one of their songs "Part Maudite". It's on the Rien Ne Suffit album which I absolutely recommend if you're feeling brave. And ofc DSO's Furnaces Of Paligensia. I feel both of these albums perfectly capture Bataille's main ideas. Also, what do you think would be the best place to start with his work? Would really appreciate some form of direction (am lazy haha). In any case, amazing video and I hope you're not taking a permanent break, this platform needs more stuff like this! Cheers.

    Beautifully crafted video. I usually avoid game essays or retrospectvies until I play said game myself, but since I had A:TMP spoiler for me long ago and needed something in the background, oh well. Not to call myself stupid but usually a lot of themes like this one tend to fly over my head. But now, with the knowledge of the underlying substance and the inspiration it takes from these books, (which I also really want to read now), I can't wait to play the game and appreciate it to the full extent.

    I'd like to see more works analyze the Justine entry as a story that works in conjunction with Pigs' themes. I've always considered it to be an even more overlooked entry than Pigs, which is a shame because its literary inspiration of de Sade is something which intertwines really well with Pigs' incredibly bleak view of class warfare and imperialism. The Amnesia games benefit from emphasizing the horrors of the past...which is partly why I feel Rebirth squandered its great potential by focusing too much on its 'alien' world to the point that it obscures the actions of 1930s colonial societies.

      @@SeaofFog Justine Florbelle is named for two of de Sade's works: the titular heroine of 'Justine', a young girl who gets tortured by all manner of corrupt authority figures, and an unfinished and destroyed manuscript called 'Les Journees de Florbelle'.
