12:08 "Not what we have, but what we enjoy constitutes our abundance... if that won't make a many happy, add not unto his riches, but take away from his desires." Epicurius. Sharp.
This was a great lecture. I like the "Uses od Philosophy" series very much. Especialy amusing for me was to hear, that nobody wants to travel to Düsseldorf, while riding a train to Düsseldorf. But it's true nobody wants to travel to Düsseldorf. ^^
This lecture has nothing to do with Bataille's accursed share, and Bataille is the furthest philosopher from the kind of moderation that is advocated here
Make a video of your own to prove the point you make? Would be interested to be informed if there's something needing correcting, I'm probably not alone in this wish.
@@BryceZed I do have a video on Bataille on my channel, although it doesn't focus on The Accursed Share specifically: ruclips.net/video/3ge0P8z_q1M/видео.html&ab_channel=Jonas%C4%8Ceika-CCKPhilosophy
Thank you so much Wesley! For sharing these great lectures and also for delving into these topics in so intellectually sparse a world it seems sometimes. God bless and take care!
Our desires are driven bt what we see and crave for not what we need physiologically. Rhats the source of evul. I think wes put it in a a way that ni one ever did contemporarly.
Tought i'd share a quote from The dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin, wich I coincidentally came across yesterday, before listening to this lecture. "Excess Is Excrement, ... Excrement Retained In The Body Is A Poison."
The dragon's gold becoming poison is a wonderful metaphor of the acquisition of wealth by the one percent of the world's rich, i can only wonder about the difference between having 10 billion or 20 billion and the motivation to make more money. What is the difference between those amounts in terms of needs and or wants?
I think that Modern Society encourages cultivation of desire because, in the absence of tradition-bound restrictions (e.g. you don't have to follow in your father's footsteps as regards a career), that is the ONLY way to figure out what to do - logic can show you HOW to get something, but cannot decide for you WHAT to strive for.
“Could I interest you of everything all of the time?” - Bo Burnham Georges Bataille might be insane. But he is nothing, if not prescient and intellectually stimulating.
so far i've listened this talk is totally unrelated to the The accursed share by Bataille, I wouldn't use this quite specific book title if your video has nothing to do with it ... (enjoying your chanel anyway, thanks:) ! )
This is great, a very useful and approachable introduction to Bataille. The handout doesn't exist on your website though. The page is just an empty link with a placeholder "#" in the path. If you could make it available that'd be great. Thanks again
Omgg dude this guy has no idea what he is talking about, The whole point of the Hobbit is that the simple, pure hearted nature of the Hobbit defeats Smaug (at least he pronounced it correctly) in spite of all odds. Bilbo brings a tiny little bag of gold, far less than he is officially meant to be given, home, and becomes superfluously rich after doing that. The whole point is that if you seek the adventure, you will grow and become someone so powerful that any external riches are mundane to your inner glory.
much to enjoy here, but the reality is the abundance spoken of here is not available to everyone. it reminds of greek democracy that applied only to citizens. todays slave still live in poverty, true poverty, whether you admit it or not
you have the obese and the emaciated. while it could be claimed the obese suffer from their abundance, equally do the emaciated from suffer from injustice. capitalism perpetuates itself by out-sourcing its poverty to other nations, and hiding their cries so as not to disturb their netflix
Pre civilization hunter gatherer civilisations we're subject to far less famine/hunger than the agriculturalists that followed them. The assumption that they were subject to real scarcity is a false premise of bad economics...
"The averadge" the poorest 10%, has gotten vastly poorer, the next 80% has gotten poorer, the top 0.01% has become richer than the riches nations ever was in human written history. Define this "Averadge", to a "dumb" carpenter, please?
Dr. Cecil, you have found a way to deliver incredibly insightful lectures without the highbrow stigma that hinders philosophy nowadays. Bravo! Bravo!

Cant believe he did one on bataille. One of my favourite philosophers, thinks in such a distinct and different way to people of his time
Going back over this lecture. Such a brilliant one. Thanks, Wes. Kindest Regards, Seán
Thank you so much Wesley! For sharing these great lectures and also for delving into these topics in so intellectually sparse a world it seems sometimes. God bless and take care!

Thank you for the many intelligent hours you are giving us?
Dear Wes Cecil, would you please consider uploading these more recent lectures on your soundcloud as well? I enjoy them immensely!

bataille, through and through!
Great lecture thanks wes. it's a shame we have such a false hunger for food but such greed for material things..
Thank You so much for this wisdom!
Fantastic as usual Wesley

Great critique of the American dream!

Just, minding my own business.
And then - Dear Lord, what did Wesley just post!?"
Please come to Düsseldorf!

The Story of The Eye....

The pulsing of the picture is nauseating. :(
I find myself so engrossed that I don't want to do anything else.
throw up on your keyboard. bataille would be proud. eat lots of eggs afterward.

Come on, Wes, where is the new lecture?

Can You Do Camus?
i don't know, can you do camus, or even startre sartre

Lol Gorgeous George Bataille! Like the vintage wrestler !

Wesley is not trying to explain The Hobbit. He used an image from the book to to talk about desiring and how to think about it.
....and it should have been an exclamation mark rather than a question mark.
only need eat once a day
I've read the accused share vol 1 and 2 (dont suggest it it's mostly a waste of time) and this lecture has nothing to do with it.
Cool dragon
poor audio
This has nothing to do with Bataille. This guy is just leeching off Bataille’s name to attract people to his own garden variety BS.

to be absolutely fair i wrote the foregoing having listened to only half of the presentation
See Instagram models, they want to be an object of desire but only to those who they desire.
