@Aman Panwar not really. One can say that majority of people find fair skin prettier but not all not even most of them. Beauty is subjective. Yes blue eyes i would say are adored by almost everyone but blonde hair are hardly acknowledged as attractive and as far as skin color is concerned, its subjective I haven't seen anyone say black is attractive but then pale isn't considered attractive either, rather there is a part of the world and it makes up the larger part which considers fair better and a part which considers tanned or brown color better.

One thing I would like to know about Malayalam cinema is that is there more movies with female leads than in other Indian cinemas. I see mostly male-led Malayalam films on RUclips.
Take off How old are you Uyare Puthiya Niyamam Rani Padmini Prathi Poovankozhi The Great Indian Kitchen Achuvinte Amma Helen And many more ... And you are asking me if there are any? There are many. And also the women in male centric movies are really strong and potrayed really well. So we malayalis don't see any difference. Not only that we have women lead movies but those movies gained great recognition . Women in malayalam are considered super stars. For example most of the roles manju warrier, parvathy etc do today are women centric. And many times they are paid more that lead males in the movie. So in malayalam industry there are only actors no man no woman.
@@ralmcg Well then...you have a long list of female centric or even classic movies with strong female characters to catch up to. There is an article in postscript malayalam with 22 women centric malayalam movies and more in a list at the end. You can begin from there.
Unfortunately that's true.... obsession for Fairness is big problem in Rajasthan also because we are also Dark skinned people specially Marwar region people
Not Rajasthan also it's problem of whole India because majority of Indians are darked skinned except some states like Kashmir, Himachal and Punjab ,haryana may be. but even dark skinned people from there face these type of stereotype.
@EXTREME read my previous comment exactly what I said majority Indians desire for fair skin so they understimate darker skinned people thats a real problem for in India because majority of Indians are dark skinned . Don't you understand you foo.
@EXTREME and for your kindest information everyone want to look good but not everyone want to look like Europeans . only people whose mind is colonized and instead of brain foreigners stool is filled admire to become like them . PS: I have no rage against Europeans but I'm not wondering to become their slave .
When I went to south india to study I was expecting them to be very progressive and atleast not racist . But the point is they are much more racist and for them men can be dark , they can drink , can roam around in short lungis but they expect women to be goddesses in everh field.🙄
I remember this first Malayalam movie I saw, “Godha” where the lead guy and his friend (both from Kerala) travel to Chandigarh for his studies and his friend is telling him (basically gushing) how punjabi women’s skin is like “wheat mixed in milk” and how excited he is about it huh!? (It’s literally one of the first dialogues you’ll hear in the teaser trailer of this movie)
That scene depicted the mindset of a simple villager who is made to believe that white skin is prettier but look up the top Malayali actresses...most of them have darker complexion bcs all play roles of the regular malayali woman
@Aman Panwar cope for what? This is not new topic. Most people don't care for the female lead, movies in south are male centred, these old filmmakers in South need to retire, that's what's needed right now to bring change.
@Aman Panwar do you think there are really no "fair skinned" or good looking South Indian women? South Indian women whether fair or not are not look forward to because film industry here is incredibly patriarchal and orthodox culture regarding local women because they women, here tend to adhere to native customs and decency(see Sai pallavi) which is a hindrance to the smooth functioning of the majority masala movie ecosystem of Telugu-Tamil industry where women are needed nothing more other than for eye candy and just obey. With native South women you cannot treat them the same way lightly as it's done with North Indian women. You just don't understand the culture here. South women if they acted like North Indian women in South they will be shamed and regard her as just uncultured and characterless. North Indian do not belong to our society and really don't matter to the people here if they really are characterless either. Same is not true for South Indian women.
@Aman Panwar idk when I've chatted with you but ok. You really seem to hate the South but that's ok I guess, I feel you've had bad experiences with many of them. I too don't have very nice interaction with every North Indian or any other person either(like you) but the difference is I don't hate them to the core, I'm not really that sensitive. North and South India are indeed too very broad fields and generalising these two regions into assumptions only an unintiated would put his luck up with. South India relatively is far more civilized and level headed with what? North India. Nothing can be generalised but this is where we are trying to analyse both this population to our mere human understanding. South is conservative regarding it's own people that's why South Indian celebrities are all so polite and decent and not as open minded and brash even promiscuous as Mumbai Delhi. Natives and Outsiders have different lenses people judge on here. If you're South Indian you know how to talk and behave in South culture if you want to seen as completely respectful by Southerners, i.e, be like us otherwise people will take you lightly or ignore you subconsciously. In North India this mostly doesn't exist and people generally are more unorganised that's why South Indian film industry exploits North Indian as much this could not happen with South because South Indian women are too rigid and traditional.
@Aman Panwar you have to roam whole South one day. Only then will you realise. If my native first hand analysis isn't helping you then sure have your way. But don't you think you are embarassing yourself with the way you handle your temperament through these opinions of yours? South and North are different cultures so "cultural differences" is something you should study. You're so easy to grasp hold with stupid emotions, no wonder present realities up North are the way they are.
This is why I choose to support our kerala malayalam film industry because they respect their own actresses authentic talents and uniqueness, rather having actresses that fit the shallow, superficial and unattainable white physical traits and beauty standards. South India is blessed with so many uniquely, gifted beautiful women (and men) yet the film producers always opt for european western looking "actors" rather than actually looking for talent. It's such a shame, I really hope that future tamil/telugu movie directors abandon these current colonial standards of beauty.
The age gap between the lead pairs has been common in film industry since long time. And ofcourse the obsession with skin color. Well its purely my opinion and its just a thought that I would like to share that even the male actor might in a lot of pressure because they have to work hard on their physical fitness even at the age of 55 or 60 so they can suite the character but another question arises that do they object when they are cast alongside an actress who is much younger to them. I also find it sometimes cringey when I see this type of casting especially when the actresses play the role of a mother of much older actor. Yes something must be done to give more chances to the local speaking actresses irrespective of their color in movies. I think the audience are now getting mature and are now looking for talented artists instead of other factors.
I have been talking about this being problematic for a while, it feels great knowing that more people are becoming aware. Earlier I was brainwashed into thinking that lighter skin was beautiful but now that I've lost my tan as I've aged, I've started to appreciate how enigmatic duskier tones look.

When you have men running the industry what more can you expect if not movies that glorify their manliness and make them unbelievably desirable to a fair-skinned female.
I understand that you've done this video with good intentions and to promote dark skinned South Indians but why is nobody talking about dark skinned North Indians? They're also being discriminated as well. There are a lot of dark skinned North Indians out there but I don't see any of them getting casted as lead roles in any of the so called Bollywood films either. It's all about India's obssession with fair skin. As we all know, India's a diverse Country and there are people with different skin tone from lighter to darker shades everywhere here. So when you talk for dark skinned people, talk for all Indians in general and not just for South Indians. North or South, we are all Indians and it shouldn't matter at all anyway.
you are right, but the problem is when a dark north Indian is discriminated they are insulted by called a South Indian. So maybe if you can address that insult and ignorance then we have something to talk about.
The difference is south Indians are generally more darker than north indians yet there is no acceptance or awareness of this inherent discrimination, something we all face. And these movies only steer it forward. Never saw any movie where a dark man gets idealised for his beauty. They idealise rajini for style, chiru/ allu arjun/ ramcharan/ntr for dance and Mahesh Babu for perfect male beauty, milky boy, prince charming etc.. who doesn't even look like a south indian.
These standards can lead to unrealistic expectations and low self-esteem, especially among young people who are constantly bombarded with images of "perfect" bodies and faces. It's important to promote body positivity and self-love instead of perpetuating harmful beauty ideals.

@nothing nothing education has nothing to do with racism or the developed world would have been free of racists who judge based on skin colour by now. I suggest you read my reply first. I didn't deny it exists in those other countries. I said it is not nearly as socially present as it has been in the subcontinent since the British came. Culturally, we have had gods who were dark skinned and were deemed handsome for it, so whatever prejudice existed before was very limited and isolated as it is in those countries outside the subcontinent too. The Europeans, primarily the British and the Germans were the inventors of the skin based racial segregation and you say they're not responsible for what they left behind on our society. I suggest you read some actual books instead of Wikipedia and Urban dictionary.
@nothing nothingAgain, I am not denying what you're saying. Such racist attitudes may well have existed for thousands of years in isloated instances but in a land that was and is primarily formed by people who had and have darker skin in general, a persistent, social norm couldn't have been built unless it got administrative reinforcement and that in the subcontinent only happened when the British ruled. I didn't say they were solely responsible but they were solely responsible for developing it as a mainstream element of the Indian social mindset which is what comes to be reflected in our media and films.

Such a sad reality! Even though with the emergence of OTT platform and films being globalized, Bollywood has started to change this trend slowly; but it's only just the beginning. A long way to go!
The fact we can't ignore and also need to consider other facts that in last 10 to 15 years we didn't seen telugu heroines in Telugu movies mostly it's highly because the influence of Bollywood and directors like Puri Jagannath and RGV who were great at intial later highly influential and attracted by Skin Shows and decided to create heroines characters as lame,,, Unfortunately Almost all South Indian are against to Skin Shows without Strong Character narration ,, Since it's look easy step for returns Producers always interested for Actresses who could not object on Skin Show ..In before that you can check how Soundarya,Vijayashanti like heroines ruled entire South Industry and also appeared in few Hindi Movies Soon here some producer got what's mistake is happening and concentrating on Strong Story lines rather then Skin shows..in recent times Actresses like Sai pallavi,Rasmikaa were getting good reputation for their work hopefully we will see other actresses like Nayanathara, Soundarya who can able beat Hero stardom ...

As much as I agree with the narrative..I m. Myself a fair girl with most my cousins who are dark skinned, most times they tell me how the fair skin is not good looking and they are better looking..I have spent alot of time thinking I m not beautiful..Indian skin has all colours and not just dusky...so I prefer a narrative where they r all good looking and not put one down for another...so I think the problem is human problem of thinking themselves as superior n putting others down..it's a problem of patriarchy not just in males but especially females ..females put other females down no matter what...which goes to male upbringing..
They are just jealous. Even I'm myself from Tamil Nadu and Iam fair skinned. My friends always mock at me that fair skinned is not beautiful. Just leave it and chill😉😉
It's a jealousy thing. I have medium skin (lighter side for a south indian) so I've seen both sides. Some dark skinned people say that my skin tone is not pretty out of their own insecurities of their dark skin, and then my fair skinned cousins call me dark and ugly. My aunt even lamented, stating that I would have been good looking if only my skin was fairer. Lighter skin typically equals good looking, and as a consequence people try to bring them down out of pettiness.
Not "fair skin", it's not an obsession in west, in many part of the world skin colour don't matter(exception if one is racist). Travel abroad, you'll get it
Hey! A "North-Indian" here... I've been watching movies and every form of entertainment media from a very young age, since I didn't have an environment in our family where we would have conversations and would share our feelings and express emotions. So, in a nutshell, movies have been an outlet for me and my emotions to feel validated and alive. As a teen, in high school, it was because of my sister I was introduced to the South Indian Film Industry, starting from Allu Arjun and Hansika Motwani in "Desamudru", in Hindi - "Ek Jwalamukhi" (translation - one volcano 😅) or maybe it was Arya's "Aa Ante" song. Nonetheless, I was invested in South Indian movies as well like my sister. The fair skin obsession which Bollywood have, was evidently present in South Indian movies. I really used to wonder coming at a point of short analysis or just wondering that how South Indian actresses can be so fair-skinned while we all knew that South Indian people are mostly dark-skinned. From there after, I was introduced to the "women are born beautiful". Then girls are beautiful and they are supposed to, especially in rich families. I mean, the obsession with making women and especially young girls, which is very concerning, to look attractive is seriously toxic, now I realise. There's one advertisment from Himalaya Face Wash product that features a teenage girl being concerned with a pimple on her face, that made felt so cringe. This is not right for any kid, let alone girls only. Thank you for your video. I came across an information that I wasn't really aware of until now. Though I knew the background of Tamanna and the surname of Kajal Aggarwal used to baffle me that how these actresses are called "South Indian actress" when they simply are not. The point should be to feel okay with both fair and dark skin/complexion. If you're treating me and others around you well, I don't require anything more from you to feel comfortable with and from you to have a harmonious relationship.

I agree, but partially. So a dark skinned woman has to be all of those and a little more. But on the other hand a fair skinned girl doesn't need to be all of those things and still be perceived as attractive. Like even if she is dumb, has no sense of dressing or doesn't even carry herself well.

she clearly mentioned in the beginning of the video that it's focus is tamil and telugu cinema....i don't understand why everyone's accusing her of generalising all south industry...guys ..watch first 1.30 min video atleast before commenting🤦♀
Tamil is not south industry ...it's just tamil industry ...south includes malyalam movie industry too ... we r proudly representing talented native actresses rather than just fair and lovely. It's soo relatable to watch malyalam movies as a mallu and almost all the movies are very convincing in terms of direction, story, acting and every small details. It's terrible that ppl don't recognise the identity of each regional industry. Malayalam actresses who r absolutely good looking but didn't gain audience support mostly due to their lack of quality in acting are now coming up telugu and tamil. Vidya Balan, aiswarya rai, deepika padukone and many successful bollywood actresses r basically south indians!

@Aditya Really... we are running away from reality. Sometimes truth is bitter to swallow, WE Indians as a whole are really casteist & rasict people knowingly or unknowingly. Instead of trying to find a solution we point a finger towards others, in this case pointing a finger towards South India when the reality is it's the whole country. The issue of casteism, racism & religious atrocities is everywhere.
I m from jammu but I have very good friends from tn and kerala. People are obsessed with fare color always. Some how our media and even ur culture showcased like this. It's not about North Indian and South India. Even we have discrimination between North East and rest of india. Discrimination is everywhere. We can get rid of all these discrimination only after we visit these place and live there. I attended marriage, visited my friend's house and able to know alot about their culture. As a young generation we can get rid of these discrimination. The day we love someone acting instead of his or her color we will bring that change. If anyone from south wanna visit my home town welcome with open arms.
As I have educated myself more with topics like these it’s more to do with male gaze , here specifically South Indian male gaze what these men prefer white tone .. but you can see male actors are hardly fair skinned or well groomed in most South Indian movies ..it’s coz of South Indian female gaze majority of the women prefer more dark skinned guys .. unless people change their mentality that beauty comes in every shade nothing can be changed
😂 movies mostly cater to male audience. Atleast in KA and AP, light skinned boys are preferred for marriages and get more dowry, people say openly, oh your Son in law looks so “smart”(?)😮 you should get him a good car and a thicker gold chain!
I do agree with this but even I am critical of South Asian being represented in Hollywood ..stories , potrayal of character and their understanding of indian and socio -economic realities in fact is the extension of NRI gaze that has internalised white saviour attitude about people living in India ..I feel like I am watching brown people in the world created and perceived by whites ...this is very shocking this does not recieve criticism as if people turning blind eye to it ...just because you have casted brown people directed by brown people who are NRI , it does not complete or end the distortion of South Asian representation ...
*Lmao most of the Tamil actresses are from KERALA not North India* 💀😂 And Telugu films have both a *mix of Kerala and kannada girls.* And only some are *North Indian.* Even Bollywood has South Indian actresses. So does that mean Bollywood isn’t representing North Indians ?? 🤨🤔
The reason why dark skinned actors don’t get discriminated is because the discrimination ended in the 80s. Rajinikanth was the first dark skinned hero that stopped that perception. Sadly, that didn’t happen with women. We have some dusky stars like Pooja hegde but not enough.
Maybe so in Tamil and Telugu Movies, but definitely Malayali women are well represented in Malayalam movies. And it must be well appreciated that the women in Malayalam movies are not chosen based on some cliched mainstream beauty standards, but based on talent, and based on how relatable they are to their character. The audience really connects with the movie due to this.
I am from North, and intentionally don't watch any film in which leading actor/actress is there because of Nepotism. We all need to boycott Bollywood Mafia. They think they own us. Also really hope South hires actresses which represents their true skin colour and so should Bollywood. Majority of Indians have dark skin.
Vyjayantimala, Hemamslini,Sreedevi,Jayapradha, Shilpa Shetty, Aishwarya Rai, Deepika Padukone are few to note who are from south and famous. Yes I agree the fact there is an obsession for fair skin, however there can be some other reasons (dark truth i guess) as well. Katrina, Kangana acted in south industry during their initial phases
This is so problematic, not because of age gape, playing a character can be done by any actors, cause it's their work to get mold into any type of role, but the actual problem is talent, skintone, even if script demands a brown or dark skin girl they are not casting an actress who will do the justice to that character, this is so injustice for those real talented ppl.
I am a dark man from hilly state of Uttrakhand with majority of people with fair complexion , trust me even in majority North India states every second person is dark and they face same discrimination in their lifes. Also Women are noway less raciest than men, ask a dusky men , how women ignore them and remain crazy about Fair guys.

2. Light complex skin does look good in various dresses and all in majority that being said I don’t deny black beauty.

4. Men do like women who don’t argue, who are fun and all. To which this video lady is calling dumb. So Sakura it’s her who is calling girls in movie dumb. There are women oriented movies aswell, in which the character of that lady is the main thing, I’m sure while making this comment she forgot about that.

👏🏻
you are right, but the problem is when a dark north Indian is discriminated they are insulted by called a South Indian.
Also the issue is being called dark, is common connection and correlation to South Indian more so to North Indian
What about dark skinned north Indians. there are millions and millions and millions of them. WHo will represent them in films.
These standards can lead to unrealistic expectations and low self-esteem, especially among young people who are constantly bombarded with images of "perfect" bodies and faces. It's important to promote body positivity and self-love instead of perpetuating harmful beauty ideals.

Sad to see that even after the British left more than 70 years ago, their false attempts at tying caste to colour and an almost general preference of Indians for fair skin has still not died out. This video applies to all of India more or less. We really need to start teaching ourselves and coming generations to feel comfortable in our own skin
@nothing nothing They are, for all practical purposes. This problem didn't exist before they came to India and established the British Raj. And no, this doesn't exist in Japan and South Korea in a way nearly as close to how it exists in the subcontinent

Are they fair skin obsessed just like Bollywood? Even when majority of south peoples are dark?

As much as I agree with the narrative..I m. Myself a fair girl with most my cousins who are dark skinned, most times they tell me how the fair skin is not good looking and they are better looking..I have spent alot of time thinking I m not beautiful..Indian skin has all colours and not just dusky...so I prefer a narrative where they r all good looking and not put one down for another...so I think the problem is human problem of thinking themselves as superior n putting others down..it's a problem of patriarchy not just in males but especially females ..females put other females down no matter what...which goes to male upbringing..
And still your dp have filter lol
They are just jealous. Even I'm myself from Tamil Nadu and Iam fair skinned. My friends always mock at me that fair skinned is not beautiful. Just leave it and chill😉😉
You can't talk about an exception and portray it as the norm. We all know what the norm in India is.
What....how can u be insecure arent men lining up for u or fighting over u and showering u wid compliments ??
I think fair skin, good looking obsession is not just about south india but global issue these days

Well said sister 👏 exactly what we all think about film industries..
Keep it up
It was different in malayalam movies.
Only a truly spiritual person can do that
😂 movies mostly cater to male audience.
