For me, it is mostly due to anxiety. I want to get an A average in every category (exams, homeworks, quizzes, discussions, etc), even though it never really works out like that lol.
I have this same issue as well. But I'm trying to get out of this perfectionist mindset, always wanting to be better than everyone else for the sake of being better. No one is perfect. Gaining a deep understanding has more priority than needing to always have the highest scores possible.
