  • It's been a year since I switched my primary camera over to the Sony A7 IV. In that time I've shot over 25,000 photos, many hours of videos, and spent countless amounts of time working with and shooting on this highly-regarded camera body. So after a year, is it still worth it?

    Great video! I just got one about a month ago as an upgrade from the A7iii and let me tell you from the video side it is a majorrrrrr improvement over the A7iii in terms of autofocus during video considering eye af, subject tracking and focus breathing comp. Also more dynamic range and color with 10bit 4:2:2 and 4k sharpness is amazing. And the flip out screen it has. I honestly really didn’t love my A7iii for the lack of flip out screen alone. A7iii is still great for photos but I sold it because it was more a photo camera than video. Now with the A7iv, it is truly a hybrid.

    Hi , thanks for your great videos,- can you connect external flashes via cable in this camera? I've been having a lot of issues with this camera and the hotshoes. I sent it to Sony / buying the multiple part involve fort this hot shoes/ changing all godox flashes for the new metal hot shoes and at the end this camera is really unreliable for photography. hotshoes becomes loose frequently and do not recognize flashes when turning the camera up and down. the only way is to connect external flashes via cable to it. I don't know how to do it since it doesn't have a sync port. any help will be appreciated.Thanks

    Nicely done. As an owner of an A7IV that was a fair representation. Even with the Panasonic S5 II in the market (which caters more to advanced video shooters), the A7IV looks to be the best overall hybrid shooter for most.

      I totally Agree with you. The panasonic S5II seems like it's a great camera. But i've used the A7IV for a year now and I can say that I won't be going to any other companies anytime soon. It's been such a pleasure to shoot with it during weddings, but i've taken it to Scotland for a trip and it was such a joy to use as well.

    Thank you for this video, I just purchased the body only and the Sony 24-70 f/2.8 GM lens. I was a bit hesitant at first because of the price even with a 25% off employee discount on both lens and body, on top of its current sale price, because I’ve never spent this much on a camera before. I came from a Canon family and my last camera was a T5i. It’s been 10 years since I bought that camera and maybe 7 years since I last took photos. Just recently I got the itch to shoot again and always wanted a Sony so thanks to your video I don’t regret the purchase at all 😂

    Everywhere on RUclips people talk about overheating and getting extremely hot of the Sony A7IV during 4K recordings and even shutting down!
    My simple question, if you film in 1440p does this camera also overheat after filming for a long time?
    Since this A7IV is high on my wish list instead of the FX30 because of more possibilities for photos and better low light possibilities, I want to be able to make beautiful films during a performance!
    These stages are not fully lit and I wouldn't add extra because of the atmosphere.
    Unfortunately, there are usually only professionals who judge this camera and who have a computer that can process 4K images without difficulty!
    While afterwards they will render to 1440p so as not to make the file too large!

    Great video sir. Your video in and of itself turned out to be an interesting review of the A7IV. Since you're using AF, I saw that you went in and out of focus on occasion. I also noticed, when you leaned forward or backward, the AF would track you well but the frame would zoom a bit in and out, i.e. focus breathing. The A7iv apparently has focus compensation now - not sure if you were using it but I'd recommend double checking and let us know if it fixes that issue for you!

    I own the a7iv I think at the very least they could reduce the 4K 60 crop to like 1.2x 1.3x or 1.4x instead of 1.5x they did a smaller crop for the a7rv so I don’t see why they couldn’t reduce on the a7iv it’s the very least they could do to help them and there customers or maybe remove or make a mark 2 I reckon if we work together they will have to listen and make a change and with your large platform and influence would really help if you could spread the idea around thx

    Wrong info at 8:40 : when shooting uncompressed RAW (or lossless compressed), the maximum burst rate is 6 FPS. 10 FPS is with compressed RAW or JPG. By the way, when shooting at 10 FPS, the EVF refresh rate becomes... 10 FPS ! Which means you're very likely to lose the subject. About autofocus, for people running towards the camera, tracking works great, but the actual hit rate is about 30% in wide area at 8 FPS. The best settings I found is flexible spot at 6 FPS with 70% sharp pictures. 6 FPS is about 2 pictures per step cycle.
    The A7iv may be good for portrait or landscape, but for sports, besides having low specs, it is absolutely unreliable.

    It's a decent entry-level full-frame camera, but with the releases of the Canon R6mk2 and Panasonic S5II it is among very compelling alternatives. Value is going to be subjective... I think there are other offerings that are better choices over ANY of these entry-level FF cameras.

      @@ryantanakaphoto I agree with you there, but in my humble opinion no one has to… I think lens selection is a little over-emphasized. Most of the manufacturers have a majority of the most important lens focal lengths covered. Most users seem to acquire 5 lenses or less when rounding out their camera systems.

      it's definitely hard to beat the SIII for video recording, main reason I swapped is most of what I do professionally is photo and the A7IV is definitely a more capable photo camera than the SIII

    • @GrayGhostDog1
      @GrayGhostDog1 Год назад +1

      @@leiyangphoto I agree there... I am in no way saying that the A7IV is a bad camera. Like most FF cameras at this price-point, although they are pretty well balanced hybrid cameras, they have their limitations. I've owned both the A7SIII and A7IV. I could tell right away that the body construction and some materials were quite different between the two... I had considered upgrading to the A7RV and did pre-order, but I cancelled it and went a total different route with my camera ecosystem.

      @@findbinnu I've attempted to use the A7IV for long-form/event-type video recording... temperature setting set to HIGH and screen out, it overheats. The A7SIII didn't have an issue under similar conditions. I'm sure that the A7IV is just fine for most users, especially as a hybrid camera, but for critical video work I would pay close attention to the A7IV while recording.

    Sorry but the S5II is the great value. The A7IV does nothing right and it's Sonys medium popcorn option. If you need stills get the A7iii and if you need video the A7siii. The only true upgrades from the A7iii is A1, A7siii, and A7RV.

    • @leiyangphoto

      Hey that’s a fair point, personally the price jump from a7iii to A1 is quite drastic, the biggest improvements imo are a lot of ease-of-use improvements vs the A7iii which is what made it a great upgrade for me. The a7iii is an absolute powerhouse and it is much better for video, you’re absolutely right on that

      I disagree. A74 makes the best compromises with what is available, even the Panasonic S5II out. Yes, perhaps it has more advanced video features, but I find it lacking in the photo department. But what is even more important than the camera itself, is the lens selection, quality and variety. The Sony ecosystem absolutely demolishes the Panasonic and its own ecosystem, even with the L len series with the other makers it has a joint venture. Plus, if you want a B camera, the combination of A74 and Fx30 (or FX3) for professional work or Zv10 or other smaller cameras for more amateur works, the color and dynamic range is similar and more consistent across the ranges.

    • @ags911
      @ags911 Год назад

      @@michaellim4165 I am personally trying to find a good hybrid combo. I may go with an A6400 for a C cam, then A7III as a photo camera / B cam, and an A7SIII or FX3 as a video camera. That would still be at least £4-5k in total. You need the 4K 120 for hi-res slow motion which the A7IV lacks so there are still a few compromises.
