Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion but I couldn’t disagree more about this stylistic choice and Haley’s performance of it. I love everything about this version, for me it’s second to the original. The hair thing with the line “I wanna feel special” to me is Haley(or the Character she’s portraying) imagining what it’s like to feel special and not necessarily portraying that she actually is special.

@@guitar_noodle I think I was very clear through out the video that I thought her voice was amazing and that she delivered her performance with passion and commitment. There are so many commenters acting as though I said so many negative things about Haley. I said zero negative things about Haley or her performance. I didn’t thing the stylistic choices of the arraignment were ideal for communicating the songs message and that it made the message a little muddled. But I highly doubt that is on her. I could be wrong but I assume that this group or company, Postmodern Jukebox, has a director or some kind of leader or authority who oversees the videos, oversees auditioning and booking singers and I assume there’s someone who directs the arraignments and makes those creative decisions. I said explicitly and multiple times that she did an amazing job and I made a point to separate her performance and her vocals from my critique on the stylistic choices of the arraignment. I’m sorry if that didn’t come across but I don’t know what else I could’ve done to emphasize that. @That's Not Acting Either - The problem is you picked a major fan-favourite video on which to levy a partial criticism 🙂 Personally, I found it refreshing that someone didn't fall over themselves praising every little bit of the video (even though I disagree about the stylistic choice criticism -- for me, it worked.). Anyway... yes, PMJ was created by Scott (the pianist in this video). He does all the arrangments (for the 300+ performances in their catalog) with (I believe) some input from the performers at times, and handles the piano duties for the vast majority of them. One thing that hasn't been brought up yet (I think), and is one of the things that really puts this performance over the top for many fans, is that this video was a true 'one take' effort (there's a video explaining how it came together). All but 1-2 of PMJ's videos are done as a single continuous shot (and without autotune or any tricks), but in this case, in a nutshell, Haley came in, camera turned on, and we see in the video to which you reacted exactly what happened in that single take. Recommendation --- Dive into their archives (if you don't get requests) and simply explore! There are too many choices to describe :-). You'll love some (you might really enjoy Morgan James' cover of "Dream On", from a performance standpoint), simply enjoy a good many, and hate some. And feel free to continue to react and ... give your reactions. I 'get' why many of the other commenters disagree with your opinion about the *one* nit that you had to pick, but honestly am flummoxed by how many people are actually ranting about it or seem personally hurt. You never gave Haley a a chance from the get go. You have a preconceived idea of how the song should be performed. PMJ doesn't make covers, they reimagine them in a different style and era. Scott Bradlee originally created this arrangement for Karen Marie. Although a great performance, it didn't have that je ne se quoi. Haley fell in love with the arrangement and made it her own . I never heard of Creep before Haley's rendition. To me this is the standard for every singer to aim at

As everything else in life, the viewers preconceived ideas will color a performance and may steer it towards what they expect. For me this performance is a master class in singing and believably. But was that because it was or because I'm a fan of Haley's. This song is about not belonging, being an outsider, feeling like a weirdo. That happens to both the confident and those without. It is the circumstances of people's lives that make them feel like a creep. For me, this performance is all about gender roles. The feeling of being trapped and only valued as a sexual being. "What am I doing here" in this demeaning relationship. She pumps her hair because pretty is what's expected from her. It doesn't matter how well she sings or how pretty she is, if no one sees her as anything but the box they want her to live in.

bingo alan... i think you are spot on. at least specifically to what haley was trying to convey. just because she is a beautiful woman versus the presubscribed concept of stalker dude of the original does not mean she can not be rejected by someone or society as a whole for being her true self and the imperfections that come with that. maybe she is obsessive, jealous or just does not fit the expected submissive girlfriend, wife, etc narrative of that time period. all this creates an internal tug of war and debate within herself of what do i need to change for someone (or society) to accept or love her (i.e. be special) vs her loving herself for being authentic (i.e. remain a weirdo). although the specific circumstances are unique for each individual, we have all been there at some point and why so many people can relate to this. the true masterpiece of the extraordinary performance is really just how well haley taps all those conflicting emotions though her expansive and incredible vocals of soft breathiness, cries, belts, growls and scats strategically combined with her movements and facial expressions that creates this crazy push and pull effect that brings all those emotions out in both painful and satisfactory ways. the "hair tease" was her saying "is this what you want me to be" and was just a very small part of a much larger message. her performance is an emotional roller coaster ride with postmodern jukebox providing the theme park underneath her. it's almost like she goes through the 12-steps of rejection and self acceptance in 4 minutes and 55 seconds. it is amazing and will go down as one of the best performances of our time.

Her 'i wish i was special' i interpereted as she KNOWS she is special but she wishes the person she was singing to ALSO saw her as special abd because they don't, she feels like a creep even knowing her power otherwise. As someone with depression who has a hard time with what i feel others think about me vs what i think of myself, this song hits hard and well. Her version is all about perception...our own and what we percieve to be others.
From your comments there is a point you are missing or don't know. Post Modern Jukebox is the group and Haley was invited to do the vocals. PMJ was founded and is led by Scott Bradlee. Scott is also the one who selects the songs, does the arrangement, and plays the piano. They are known for taking modern pop and rock songs and turning them into 30's, 40's and 50's style music. They use many different vocalists and musicians depending on the sound they are trying to get.

There’s no “Director” for this vid. It’s just their every night stage performance captured on a one camera setup. I think they produced multiple vids of their show tunes in this room on a day off during their European tour. Set up and shoot. Haley was under the weather during this shoot and it’s just one take.

This performance is one of my all time favorites for any music video I've seen. I've seen Haley from her American Idol days in 2012 when she rocked out a few performances. Which btw, a few judges were condescending to her except for Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. Most believe J Lo was either jealous and I forget the other big name judge but didn't like her confidence and cockiness at time and that the producers were pushing for 2 other singers at the time, but on lookers at home knew who the best performances were and proved their dismay online quite a bit. Haley herself knew she killed it. Her dad and mom are professional musicians who she learned from. Her dad played guitar on one of Led Zeppelin performances and he nailed it with her. Anyway between this performance a bunch by Courtney Hadwin who also knows how to perform and sing are my favorites online. I'm sure this was mentioned, but this was done in one take by Haley when she was not feeling well and had already performed that day on tour in Europe with PMJ. She wanted to do another take but Scott the producer said NO I think we got it. Oh yeah, as for this performance not fitting the song, well as other said, it's personal taste. Probably because you love this song so much and may have a preconceived notion burned inside you of what you felt back when it 1st came out. Just something I felt while watching. Not good or bad, but a feeling I got when you 1st mentioned it. I learned over the year when someone is already locked in enough to say something out loud chances are they are set going forward. It's hard to break away from that.
I think this particular version is a story. I feel it still portrays the intention of the song of feeling inadequate, either in a particular setting with a certain person or with ideas. I think she plays with the notions of the vintage time period, and the golden age of Hollywood, ( the potrayal of women on the silver screen juxtaposed (with her grittier voice) with realities, and expectations.
Have you ever learned about the insecurities hidden even in the most beautiful of women, how they put up a facade of pure gorgousness as a shield - and if you get to now them better, how their angst becomes visible? That is what this interpretation is about: a facade of power over men in general - and how it crumbles in the face of one specific guy where their magic fails. A guy who is too self-absorbed and will treat them like shit? And I think that is the story of this version - and it's perfectly done here.

I have watched may people do reviews of this beautiful song. The amazing thing they all miss is how she perfectly harmonized with the saxophone at the end. That's perfection as a punctuation for a ending.
I have to say that I was very excited to watch your reaction to this since it's one of my top 3 or 4 performances to watch reactions to. I also have to say that I was extremely disappointed for the first half of it because you clearly have worked on your craft in the 9 months since you did this one. You talked over a lot of it at the beginning and seemed to be overanalyzing the details instead of just listening and enjoying it. Thankfully the second half was like night and day and the guy I love to watch react to stuff was back! You just sat back and enjoyed it and gave genuine reactions instead of nit-picking like a lot of the vocal coaches on here do. Great job!

However. My take on it is exactly that. My take. This is a song that my daughter sings beautifully in the same style as Haley (maybe I am already biased) and I find suited to a young woman struggling. If I can be so rude as to recommend you switch off from the original, listen to Haley's version several times with your eyes closed. and then listen to it again with the video. You might be pleasantly surprised. It reminds me in a funny way of Johnny Cash's rendition of "Hurt". Sometimes the originals are just that. Sometimes they are improved on. I have met many beautiful women who were very insecure about their looks and desirability. You can not make asumptions about how someone feels about themselves and how that should influence how they approach a particular song. I'm guessing Haley sings and performs Creep in character. Uhm, the only reason why Haley Reinhart didn't win American Idol as she should have was because American Idol permitted almost "unlimited power voting", as opposed to only "one-vote per individual voting". Had American Idol only permitted "one-vote per individual voting", which is the only way to host a fair and balanced talent competition, Haley would have won the show easily in a landslide, as opposed to getting ripped off.
Hi man, before watching your video I flew over some of the comments and after that had almost a negative presumption about your reaction, but it was gorgeous! I have watched this performance hundreds of times, your body language and facial expressions had me relive the crazy chills and that disbelieve... Maybe I was not as reluctant mentally as you were because I knew and liked Radiohead's cover, but never loved it that much as you obviously do... For me it doesn't matter how Radiohead interpreted the song and what feelings they want to convey, I instantly felt after only a few lines that for me this is now the reference version, this is exactly the only way this song should be sung from now on imo, and I doubt anyone could do it even nearly as well as Haley did, her vocals are just brilliant... I love and appreciate this comment. The only thing I will say is that I think both are true. I did not and will not deny the visceral effect her singing and performance had on me. But you are correct. The part of my mind that sees the world through my craft or job or whatever, that pert of me can’t help but see what I talked bout in the end. I stand by my thoughts on the stylistic choices of the arrangement (and I’m happy we can disagree and still get along) but Haley’s performance was magnificent and, as I said in the video, I take nothing away from her because of my thoughts about the arrangement. It’s like if an actor delivered a top tier performance of hamlet but the director decided to make the play an 80’s inspired punk rock musical….it would be an awful choice of concept but that wouldn’t have to take away from the amazing job the actor did. And Haley did an absolutely amazing job.

I don't know if I agree with the hair-primp motion being a motion of confidence. If anything, I've always seen it as if it were a form of self-consciousness, to fix one's hair because they feel like they have to make themself look better in the moment, or a self soothing motion. Especially where you mentioned how she made her voice "small" kinda signified to me that she is trying to appear less noticeable. But that's my own take really, and to your sentiment towards the performance itself I completely agree.
As I see it that's the point of her take on it. It's teasing and almost patronizing. It flips the meaning to be empowering for her. Like she's stuck in a small town despite her staggering talent and just belting the blues.
This reminds me of some of Marilyn Monroe’s comedic films. Where her character says one thing, then you realize she could mean something else, but her wide-eyed innocence make you question whether she is aware or not. Like here, it makes it interesting. I think it’s deliberately ‘off’.

I think this perfornace is like an Ink Blot Test. What the individual feels about themselves is projected upon the performer. On the other hand, what if she was the most sexy woman totally in control of her feminine wiles? Maybe she saw some goodness in him that was beyond all her attraction tricks; thereby, making her feel like a creep.

I suspect if this were the original, you'd have a different view of it. Yes, this performance doesn't convey the same emotional feeling as the original. With the original you related directly to the narrator of the story. With this rendition, it almost forces you to sit back and observe her sadness versus feeling it yourself. It's a different observation angle to the theme. Also, the performance is so shockingly amazing, that distracts a bit from her message. After watching it 50,000 times though (and you will), the message creeps (har har) back in.
Understanding the times of the 40's and 50's. I feel Elizabeth Zarhoff pegged the style choice. Back then most women were housewives and taken for granted and under appreciated by their husbands. She just wants to feel special and not stuck in the kitchen making dinner everyday !!

It seems you've triggered everybody so badly they forgot to tell you this was the first and only take they recorded for this performance! Anyway, the stylistic choices PMJ makes are rarely without reason - Scott Bradlee, the founder & director who arranges all of the music really puts a lot of thought into the songs and thinks about the different messages that could be gleaned from each song, and he really takes the vocalist's ideas into consideration. Authentic performances are the best performances, so that's what he goes for. In this case, I think her character in the song is having a conflict between knowing/thinking that she's special, but feeling like she's not. Perhaps her own experience on American Idol - getting to the top three and losing - provided some of the inspiration. Another story she could be telling might be of a girl from a small town where she was hot stuff, but after moving to Hollywood to find fame and fortune failed and is wondering how to move on with her life. Anyway, I guess the general public disagrees with your particular critique since this is by far PMJ's most popular song. Either that, or maybe they missed out on another hundred million views! That said, I enjoyed your reaction - it was cool to see someone who can understand what can make her performance stand out besides just her amazing vocals.

Based on your comment about this arrangement missing the idea of the song, I think you might appreciate Angelina Jordan's black & white video of her cover of I Put A Spell On You. She did the arrangement in the style of the original composer, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and she performs it at age 9 with more authenticity than most of the adults who've covered it over the years. I feel the laws of physics changing around me whenever I listen to it. The video is nicely shot, also. It's worth your time.
You have to remember, also. This song was done as if it was done in the 30's or the 40's. That is what PMJ does. And Haley, she did not do this on her own. PMJ ASK HER to do it. She acted the way a woman in the 30's-40's would. (just my opinions) Nice Post.
Great reaction...I can see where you're coming from regarding the style not fitting with the original intent of the song but my take is this is a woman's approach to the song....Haley takes you on a roller coaster of emotions....her interpretation is intriguing...she definitely inhabits the character she chooses to play in her interpretations....her vocals are on another level...as they are in any genre she sings....try Habits or Black Hole Sun for more interpretations of popular songs.
I would say watch the whole thing first then again and again and again you'll realize she's playing into the insecure role ... You will pick up on many many of those insecure mannerisms that are aware in the original
I really wanted to lay into you over a couple comments, but the rest of your reaction was so raw, with real emotion and honest enthusiasm for Haley's talent, that I digressed, and remembered I don't like when people yell at reactors for doing what they do....lol. I will respectfully add my two cents if ya don't mind though. I get it, I'm a gen Xer, I cut my teeth on everything from punk, to new wave, to grunge, and Radiohead man, them, R.E.M. Depeche Mode and U.2 were my go-to bands for angst and to shake my fist at society and the beautiful people, all up in their ivory tower thinking their so special. There's solace in that feeling, and that's what Thom Yorke, singer from Radiohead, tapped into so well when he wrote that song. Here's the rub though, us dumb guys seem to be self involved supposedly, especially when we're younger, I mean I don't see it, but my wife says it all the time...😂 Seriously though, after me n her raising a, some how well adjusted, daughter, and me making most of the mistakes, I didn't realize how much that song can relate to those that you would never ever think would feel like Thom Yorke felt when he wrote that song. And that's just from normal teenager insecurity in both sexes, add in crap girls have to deal with, any bullying, weight issues, body shaming, or domestic problems at home, and you never know what's going on behind those beautiful eyes that we think are so perfect and free of doubt and fear. Sorry, long two cents, also Haley's parents are musicians, dad Jazz guitarist, Haley started singing jazz in high school, studied it full time in college, was her fist passion in music, and she's preformed with many Jazz heavy hitters, I think that's why she looked so comfortable and was a good fit for this version. Late to the party but I think the style absolutely works in the 50s housewife that still wants to feel special after being stuck I'm the everyday rut of life. I picture a smokey jazz club and the hard working waitress always being overlooked by the Ella/Marilyn frontwoman on stage because she's always dressed down and beaten down by the drunk partons. It's that whoa-is-me attitude knowing that you could be who you know you are if you only had that break. At least that's my 2 cents.
It's going to be this style with pmj. Suggesting any bands identity style as an incorrect choice is the issue. The challenge is how do she do with it? Great. When Device covered the rolling stones it wasn't to see if minimalist electronic would fit. It was their interpretation. We may not like it but it's never a bad choice. It just belongs where you're not or where I'm not.

There are so many commenters acting as though I said so many negative things about Haley. I said zero negative things about Haley or her performance. I didn’t thing the stylistic choices of the arraignment were ideal for communicating the songs message and that it made the message a little muddled. But I highly doubt that is on her. I could be wrong but I assume that this group or company, Postmodern Jukebox, has a director or some kind of leader or authority who oversees the videos, oversees auditioning and booking singers and I assume there’s someone who directs the arraignments and makes those creative decisions. I said explicitly and multiple times that she did an amazing job and I made a point to separate her performance and her vocals from my critique on the stylistic choices of the arraignment. I’m sorry if that didn’t come across but I don’t know what else I could’ve done to emphasize that.

Personally, I found it refreshing that someone didn't fall over themselves praising every little bit of the video (even though I disagree about the stylistic choice criticism -- for me, it worked.).
Anyway... yes, PMJ was created by Scott (the pianist in this video). He does all the arrangments (for the 300+ performances in their catalog) with (I believe) some input from the performers at times, and handles the piano duties for the vast majority of them.
One thing that hasn't been brought up yet (I think), and is one of the things that really puts this performance over the top for many fans, is that this video was a true 'one take' effort (there's a video explaining how it came together). All but 1-2 of PMJ's videos are done as a single continuous shot (and without autotune or any tricks), but in this case, in a nutshell, Haley came in, camera turned on, and we see in the video to which you reacted exactly what happened in that single take.
Recommendation --- Dive into their archives (if you don't get requests) and simply explore! There are too many choices to describe :-). You'll love some (you might really enjoy Morgan James' cover of "Dream On", from a performance standpoint), simply enjoy a good many, and hate some.
And feel free to continue to react and ... give your reactions. I 'get' why many of the other commenters disagree with your opinion about the *one* nit that you had to pick, but honestly am flummoxed by how many people are actually ranting about it or seem personally hurt. If you look at her pre idol days with her jam band, she covered songs from the ‘90s like lovefool, songs by no doubt and sublime, heck she covered Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, all in a jazzy style. As everything else in life, the viewers preconceived ideas will color a performance and may steer it towards what they expect. For me this performance is a master class in singing and believably. But was that because it was or because I'm a fan of Haley's. This song is about not belonging, being an outsider, feeling like a weirdo. That happens to both the confident and those without. It is the circumstances of people's lives that make them feel like a creep. For me, this performance is all about gender roles. The feeling of being trapped and only valued as a sexual being. "What am I doing here" in this demeaning relationship. She pumps her hair because pretty is what's expected from her. It doesn't matter how well she sings or how pretty she is, if no one sees her as anything but the box they want her to live in.

bingo alan... i think you are spot on. at least specifically to what haley was trying to convey. just because she is a beautiful woman versus the presubscribed concept of stalker dude of the original does not mean she can not be rejected by someone or society as a whole for being her true self and the imperfections that come with that. maybe she is obsessive, jealous or just does not fit the expected submissive girlfriend, wife, etc narrative of that time period. all this creates an internal tug of war and debate within herself of what do i need to change for someone (or society) to accept or love her (i.e. be special) vs her loving herself for being authentic (i.e. remain a weirdo). although the specific circumstances are unique for each individual, we have all been there at some point and why so many people can relate to this.
the true masterpiece of the extraordinary performance is really just how well haley taps all those conflicting emotions though her expansive and incredible vocals of soft breathiness, cries, belts, growls and scats strategically combined with her movements and facial expressions that creates this crazy push and pull effect that brings all those emotions out in both painful and satisfactory ways. the "hair tease" was her saying "is this what you want me to be" and was just a very small part of a much larger message. her performance is an emotional roller coaster ride with postmodern jukebox providing the theme park underneath her. it's almost like she goes through the 12-steps of rejection and self acceptance in 4 minutes and 55 seconds. it is amazing and will go down as one of the best performances of our time.

Her 'i wish i was special' i interpereted as she KNOWS she is special but she wishes the person she was singing to ALSO saw her as special abd because they don't, she feels like a creep even knowing her power otherwise. As someone with depression who has a hard time with what i feel others think about me vs what i think of myself, this song hits hard and well. Her version is all about perception...our own and what we percieve to be others.
From your comments there is a point you are missing or don't know. Post Modern Jukebox is the group and Haley was invited to do the vocals. PMJ was founded and is led by Scott Bradlee. Scott is also the one who selects the songs, does the arrangement, and plays the piano. They are known for taking modern pop and rock songs and turning them into 30's, 40's and 50's style music. They use many different vocalists and musicians depending on the sound they are trying to get.

I've watched this 100+ times and, subjectively, although it may not have been the best choice, it's better than any other choices that have been used in this song by anyone else.

I see it as someone who lacks the self- confidence to grasp how beautiful and special she really is. That it comes off so perfectly is a result of Haley’s immense talent as a performer and entertainer, in addition to her peerless vocals. There’s no “Director” for this vid. It’s just their every night stage performance captured on a one camera setup. I think they produced multiple vids of their show tunes in this room on a day off during their European tour. Set up and shoot. Haley was under the weather during this shoot and it’s just one take.

She oozes emotion through her voice. Not many can just stand and create like she can. Scatting IS hard. Now the legendary note...1 take; that's all it took. You said it, she "paints" songs. Haley has one of the biggest vocal toolkits you will find.

This performance is one of my all time favorites for any music video I've seen. I've seen Haley from her American Idol days in 2012 when she rocked out a few performances. Which btw, a few judges were condescending to her except for Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. Most believe J Lo was either jealous and I forget the other big name judge but didn't like her confidence and cockiness at time and that the producers were pushing for 2 other singers at the time, but on lookers at home knew who the best performances were and proved their dismay online quite a bit. Haley herself knew she killed it. Her dad and mom are professional musicians who she learned from. Her dad played guitar on one of Led Zeppelin performances and he nailed it with her. Anyway between this performance a bunch by Courtney Hadwin who also knows how to perform and sing are my favorites online.
I'm sure this was mentioned, but this was done in one take by Haley when she was not feeling well and had already performed that day on tour in Europe with PMJ. She wanted to do another take but Scott the producer said NO I think we got it.
Oh yeah, as for this performance not fitting the song, well as other said, it's personal taste. Probably because you love this song so much and may have a preconceived notion burned inside you of what you felt back when it 1st came out. Just something I felt while watching. Not good or bad, but a feeling I got when you 1st mentioned it. I learned over the year when someone is already locked in enough to say something out loud chances are they are set going forward. It's hard to break away from that.
I remember her on American Idol. She is a fantastic singer. She uses a lot of different techniques and does them very well.
I think this particular version is a story. I feel it still portrays the intention of the song of feeling inadequate, either in a particular setting with a certain person or with ideas. I think she plays with the notions of the vintage time period, and the golden age of Hollywood, ( the potrayal of women on the silver screen juxtaposed (with her grittier voice) with realities, and expectations.
Have you ever learned about the insecurities hidden even in the most beautiful of women, how they put up a facade of pure gorgousness as a shield - and if you get to now them better, how their angst becomes visible? That is what this interpretation is about: a facade of power over men in general - and how it crumbles in the face of one specific guy where their magic fails. A guy who is too self-absorbed and will treat them like shit?
And I think that is the story of this version - and it's perfectly done here.

The entire point of Post Modern Jukebox is to take modern songs and rearrange them in styles they wouldn't otherwise be in.
The thing with her hair was something that I believe was done by the Andrews sisters singing boogie woogie during WWII.

I have watched may people do reviews of this beautiful song. The amazing thing they all miss is how she perfectly harmonized with the saxophone at the end. That's perfection as a punctuation for a ending.

I have to say that I was very excited to watch your reaction to this since it's one of my top 3 or 4 performances to watch reactions to. I also have to say that I was extremely disappointed for the first half of it because you clearly have worked on your craft in the 9 months since you did this one. You talked over a lot of it at the beginning and seemed to be overanalyzing the details instead of just listening and enjoying it. Thankfully the second half was like night and day and the guy I love to watch react to stuff was back! You just sat back and enjoyed it and gave genuine reactions instead of nit-picking like a lot of the vocal coaches on here do. Great job!

This is a song that my daughter sings beautifully in the same style as Haley (maybe I am already biased) and I find suited to a young woman struggling.
If I can be so rude as to recommend you switch off from the original, listen to Haley's version several times with your eyes closed. and then listen to it again with the video. You might be pleasantly surprised.
It reminds me in a funny way of Johnny Cash's rendition of "Hurt".

I have met many beautiful women who were very insecure about their looks and desirability. You can not make asumptions about how someone feels about themselves and how that should influence how they approach a particular song. I'm guessing Haley sings and performs Creep in character. She made the song her own.
I’ve seen a couple of similar comments pop up the last few days. I don’t know where this is coming from. Nothing I said about her performance had anything to do in the least with her physical appearance.
@@tnae In your first interjection you said she or the director made the wrong choice of vibe to communicate the message of the song. The implication is that the 'seductress' persona as you describe it doesn't work with the song. I disagree, as I tried to imply that can be a role some women play not because of their confidence but their lack of it. It is certainly not what Thom York had in mind when he wrote the song but I think it works brilliantly in this performance.
She was in the top 5 i think in an early season of American Idol

Uhm, the only reason why Haley Reinhart didn't win American Idol as she should have was because American Idol permitted almost "unlimited power voting", as opposed to only "one-vote per individual voting". Had American Idol only permitted "one-vote per individual voting", which is the only way to host a fair and balanced talent competition, Haley would have won the show easily in a landslide, as opposed to getting ripped off.

Hi man, before watching your video I flew over some of the comments and after that had almost a negative presumption about your reaction, but it was gorgeous! I have watched this performance hundreds of times, your body language and facial expressions had me relive the crazy chills and that disbelieve... Maybe I was not as reluctant mentally as you were because I knew and liked Radiohead's cover, but never loved it that much as you obviously do... For me it doesn't matter how Radiohead interpreted the song and what feelings they want to convey, I instantly felt after only a few lines that for me this is now the reference version, this is exactly the only way this song should be sung from now on imo, and I doubt anyone could do it even nearly as well as Haley did, her vocals are just brilliant... And the arrangement is perfect. Period. Listen to this two or three more times and you won't be able to listen to Radiohead again... - Maybe you can, I can't... Anyway I want to defend your reaction, you have your experience with this song, your history and perception and your personal and professional point of view and were honest about it, yet you obviously enjoyed every little note and color and rasp and growl and all of her tricks, your body felt the perfection in this, just some little part of your brain wanted to stay critical and independend... it was outvoted by the rest of you :) --- Loved your reaction man, stay authentic, and please react to more Haley, best vocalist you got in the US... no use denying...

I love and appreciate this comment. The only thing I will say is that I think both are true. I did not and will not deny the visceral effect her singing and performance had on me. But you are correct. The part of my mind that sees the world through my craft or job or whatever, that pert of me can’t help but see what I talked bout in the end. I stand by my thoughts on the stylistic choices of the arrangement (and I’m happy we can disagree and still get along) but Haley’s performance was magnificent and, as I said in the video, I take nothing away from her because of my thoughts about the arrangement. It’s like if an actor delivered a top tier performance of hamlet but the director decided to make the play an 80’s inspired punk rock musical….it would be an awful choice of concept but that wouldn’t have to take away from the amazing job the actor did. And Haley did an absolutely amazing job.

Again, this is with PMJ and it's Jazz because that's what they do (Haley covers other genres as well, and she does great with other bands or musicians, but with PMJ it's Jazz and I love it). I don't know if I agree with the hair-primp motion being a motion of confidence. If anything, I've always seen it as if it were a form of self-consciousness, to fix one's hair because they feel like they have to make themself look better in the moment, or a self soothing motion. Especially where you mentioned how she made her voice "small" kinda signified to me that she is trying to appear less noticeable. But that's my own take really, and to your sentiment towards the performance itself I completely agree.
Can you appreciate that humans can have deep feelings of inadequacies regardless how "perfect" or "special" they truly are?
As I see it that's the point of her take on it. It's teasing and almost patronizing. It flips the meaning to be empowering for her. Like she's stuck in a small town despite her staggering talent and just belting the blues.

This reminds me of some of Marilyn Monroe’s comedic films. Where her character says one thing, then you realize she could mean something else, but her wide-eyed innocence make you question whether she is aware or not. Like here, it makes it interesting. I think it’s deliberately ‘off’.

I think this perfornace is like an Ink Blot Test. What the individual feels about themselves is projected upon the performer.
On the other hand, what if she was the most sexy woman totally in control of her feminine wiles?
Maybe she saw some goodness in him that was beyond all her attraction tricks; thereby, making her feel like a creep.

I appreciate that you were watching this for the first time and I've seen this cover many times, so for sure it's not simple to process, react and absorb everything at once. And I really did enjoy your growing appreciation of Haley's performance, technique, and skill. That said, while I understand the concern you had about a possible mis-match between the style of the arrangement and the meaning of the lyrics, I disagree. I think she does perform the lyrics with a kind of irony that allows her to say "I wish I was special" and to mean "I am so damn special" at the same time. I don't think an eyeroll was needed to sell it. At the end of my watching of your reaction, I said to the screen, "Go back and watch it again and see if you still have the problem." Have you rewatched it? Did your perspective change? Anyway, thanks for an entertaining reaction vid.

I suspect if this were the original, you'd have a different view of it. Yes, this performance doesn't convey the same emotional feeling as the original. With the original you related directly to the narrator of the story. With this rendition, it almost forces you to sit back and observe her sadness versus feeling it yourself. It's a different observation angle to the theme.
Also, the performance is so shockingly amazing, that distracts a bit from her message. After watching it 50,000 times though (and you will), the message creeps (har har) back in.
Understanding the times of the 40's and 50's. I feel Elizabeth Zarhoff pegged the style choice. Back then most women were housewives and taken for granted and under appreciated by their husbands. She just wants to feel special and not stuck in the kitchen making dinner everyday !!

Years ago Haley was in the finals of American Idol but did not win. I still do not know why. She is one of the most talented singers alive.
You cannot listen to this song and approach it as if it was the original because it's not completely different interpretation yet the same lyrics with great vocals fantastic band New Orleans bluesy sound jazz it's not supposed to be like the original you don't have to be some falling over yourself fan to appreciate how amazing Haley Reinhart voice is not to mention her creativity as a performer
"The message" of the song actually changes just because, it's a female singing it . . . . . TOTALLY different perspective. It's about envy instead of unworthiness.

The song contains double meaning. If you ever heard Johnny Cash's Hurt. It was a song He sung and it was his version. She used it towards he, sensually instead of the original version. It seems you've triggered everybody so badly they forgot to tell you this was the first and only take they recorded for this performance! Anyway, the stylistic choices PMJ makes are rarely without reason - Scott Bradlee, the founder & director who arranges all of the music really puts a lot of thought into the songs and thinks about the different messages that could be gleaned from each song, and he really takes the vocalist's ideas into consideration. Authentic performances are the best performances, so that's what he goes for. In this case, I think her character in the song is having a conflict between knowing/thinking that she's special, but feeling like she's not. Perhaps her own experience on American Idol - getting to the top three and losing - provided some of the inspiration. Another story she could be telling might be of a girl from a small town where she was hot stuff, but after moving to Hollywood to find fame and fortune failed and is wondering how to move on with her life. Anyway, I guess the general public disagrees with your particular critique since this is by far PMJ's most popular song. Either that, or maybe they missed out on another hundred million views! That said, I enjoyed your reaction - it was cool to see someone who can understand what can make her performance stand out besides just her amazing vocals.

Based on your comment about this arrangement missing the idea of the song, I think you might appreciate Angelina Jordan's black & white video of her cover of I Put A Spell On You. She did the arrangement in the style of the original composer, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and she performs it at age 9 with more authenticity than most of the adults who've covered it over the years. I feel the laws of physics changing around me whenever I listen to it. The video is nicely shot, also. It's worth your time.

You have to remember, also. This song was done as if it was done in the 30's or the 40's. That is what PMJ does. And Haley, she did not do this on her own. PMJ ASK HER to do it. She acted the way a woman in the 30's-40's would. (just my opinions) Nice Post.

Great reaction...I can see where you're coming from regarding the style not fitting with the original intent of the song but my take is this is a woman's approach to the song....Haley takes you on a roller coaster of emotions....her interpretation is intriguing...she definitely inhabits the character she chooses to play in her interpretations....her vocals are on another level...as they are in any genre she sings....try Habits or Black Hole Sun for more interpretations of popular songs.
I would say watch the whole thing first then again and again and again you'll realize she's playing into the insecure role ... You will pick up on many many of those insecure mannerisms that are aware in the original
I really wanted to lay into you over a couple comments, but the rest of your reaction was so raw, with real emotion and honest enthusiasm for Haley's talent, that I digressed, and remembered I don't like when people yell at reactors for doing what they do....lol. I will respectfully add my two cents if ya don't mind though. I get it, I'm a gen Xer, I cut my teeth on everything from punk, to new wave, to grunge, and Radiohead man, them, R.E.M. Depeche Mode and U.2 were my go-to bands for angst and to shake my fist at society and the beautiful people, all up in their ivory tower thinking their so special. There's solace in that feeling, and that's what Thom Yorke, singer from Radiohead, tapped into so well when he wrote that song.
Here's the rub though, us dumb guys seem to be self involved supposedly, especially when we're younger, I mean I don't see it, but my wife says it all the time...😂 Seriously though, after me n her raising a, some how well adjusted, daughter, and me making most of the mistakes, I didn't realize how much that song can relate to those that you would never ever think would feel like Thom Yorke felt when he wrote that song. And that's just from normal teenager insecurity in both sexes, add in crap girls have to deal with, any bullying, weight issues, body shaming, or domestic problems at home, and you never know what's going on behind those beautiful eyes that we think are so perfect and free of doubt and fear.
Sorry, long two cents, also Haley's parents are musicians, dad Jazz guitarist, Haley started singing jazz in high school, studied it full time in college, was her fist passion in music, and she's preformed with many Jazz heavy hitters, I think that's why she looked so comfortable and was a good fit for this version. Late to the party but I think the style absolutely works in the 50s housewife that still wants to feel special after being stuck I'm the everyday rut of life.
I picture a smokey jazz club and the hard working waitress always being overlooked by the Ella/Marilyn frontwoman on stage because she's always dressed down and beaten down by the drunk partons. It's that whoa-is-me attitude knowing that you could be who you know you are if you only had that break. At least that's my 2 cents.
It's going to be this style with pmj. Suggesting any bands identity style as an incorrect choice is the issue. The challenge is how do she do with it? Great.
When Device covered the rolling stones it wasn't to see if minimalist electronic would fit. It was their interpretation. We may not like it but it's never a bad choice. It just belongs where you're not or where I'm not.

There are many, many wonderful female vocalists on this planet, but if you listen to other songs by Haley, she ranks, in my mind, the best on the planet !!
I can absolutely respect the difference in opinion and I appreciate the tone of your message. I will say that at no point did I find anything to complain about at all in her voice or her performance. Yeah. I think i understand your point of view as i understand those few comments below who "disagree" with you. Wow, those were interesting conversations. 😆 But i have to say that i'm with you on this one. In my mind this song is something else than a seductive 20's jazz cabaree enviroment piece. And i think someone was hurt because you doubt the same thing. They expected you to praise 110 % this performance. Which btw you actually did.
