- Gianni Russo’s first acting job is widely considered his most memorable. He played Carlo Rizzi, the ill-fated son-in-law of Vito Corleone, in The Godfather. Since then, his career has spanned more than 40 films, including Lepke, Any Given Sunday and Seabiscuit, as well as numerous television roles.
Raised in New York’s Little Italy, Russo’s experience with the Mob began in his adolescence-delivering envelopes for Mafia boss Frank Costello.
During a special conversation on April 16, 2019 at The Mob Museum, Russo discussed his firsthand experience:

My understanding is that Francis Ford Coppola went to the Chicago Outfit who controlled Hollywood movie industry through their unions to keep Al Pacino in the role of Michael. Robert Evans head of Paramount Studio at the time wanted to replace Al Pacino with Ryan O'Neal.

Gianni Russo claims that he was a good friend of Joe Columbo (Then Boss of the Columbo Crime Family at the time) According to him he brokered the deal between the Producers of Godfather 1 (Albert Ruddy) and crime boss Joe Columbo to give the producers permission to film on the streets of New York. During these negotiations Joe Columbo (According to Russo) told the producers that he wanted Gianni Russo to be given the role of "Carlo" in the film. Michael Franzese who would become a a well publicized caporegime of the Columbo Crime Family and whom at the time was a trusted and close associate of Joe Columbo during the early 1970's stated in one of his recent podcasts that he didn't remember ever seeing Gianni Russo around Joe Columbo. That should tell you a lot about this guy Russo's stories.
1)Russo had already moved to Vegas before Franzese became an adult
2)Franzese wasnt even a recruit in 71/72, his father in jail.
3)Russo said his main guys were Costello and later Tommy Bilotti, not Colombo.

One of the ironies is that the part of Carlo was tiny. I don’t know if they made it smaller because they had didn’t want Russo in the role, or if it was always meant to be a tiny part.
Excellent point. I think they made it tiny b/c Russo was a horrible actor but they were stuck with him. Carlo was a main character in the book so no way could it have been that tiny & mostly action scenes. I remember him being so off when I watched it for the first time in the 90's, even w/Brando's coaching. This is one of the main things that makes almost everything Russo says, credible b/c no way could he have gotten this role w/o Mob muscles.
