Now I understand why "water conditioners" labels never say what are the active ingredients...
IKR so annoying
Yeah, and I am used to finding stuff out via SDS material sheets but for this I found nothing. Ancient Chinese Secret the Calgon way. :/
Just wanted you to know you have inspired me to take up the hobby as I suffer from depression and anxiety disorders.iam hopefully this will help me resolve the issue and get back to being more relaxed

we have chloramine, does thiosulphate correct that too?
chloramine is chlorine and ammonia. It will detoxify the chlorine but leave behind the ammonia. you will have to deal with the ammonia separately if your water is even treated with chloramine.
+The king of DIY so, just ignore the fact that it doesn't treat ammonia since the filter's biological media will take care of it?
it works for me. why not run a 3 stage water filter and filter out most of the contaminates? then there would be less chlorine. i have a 6 stage ro. but i have found that the 3 prefilters does take out most of the chlorine and this is the waste water from the ro.
+The king of DIY - with the conditioners that remove chloamine .... what is in them to do that?
Hypo is being used by lot of aquarium shops here in India . Its cheap and suggested to use very less. Although i knew about hypo, i had forgotten and this video reminded me of it. Ordering it now
Great video! I recently bought one litre of dechlorinator off Amazon for £16.65 which is about $22. That treats 50,000 litres which I thought was a lot for the money before seeing this.
Thank you soooo much.. I was about to regret getting an aquarium and I didn’t know that you always need to buy water conditioner when your out of it
Something that is 8x cheaper in this hobby!? That means I can afford more aquariums!
I like your style and I hope in 4 years you've made some pretty cool tanks
@@intergypsi1487 Thanks man I have been working on ponds too lately.
Did NOT know this and I'm almost out of my conditioner, thank you for saving me money!
can u make a video about hob filters plz and witch one is the best for different size tanks plz
I don't know what you would like as info for HOB filters, but I can answer a few of your questions ;) In my opinion, Aquaclear makes the best HOB you can find since they are not cartridge based and have lots of space for biological media. Then as for the the difference for the tank sizes, are you keeping tropical fish or goldfish ? If you are keeping tropical, just go with what is written on the box (ex.: model 110 is good for aquarium 60 to 110 gallons). If you are keeping goldfish, aim for 10x the water volume per hour (ex.: 45 gallons, 450 gal/h).
So very useful, thank you!!
Tip: You can also use seachem safe, which is ridiculously potent. It is a non-diluted powder form of prime, which will still remove ammonia and neutralize nitrite and nitrate. A 250 gram bottle runs for 12 dollars and will treat 60,000 gallons or 1/4 tsp per 300 GALLONS. In fact it is so potent that I've decided it's ridiculous for me to use, who only has smaller tanks... and thus would be a nightmare to measure.
I made the switch to Safe but bought a set of jewelers scales to measure it out.
A 1/16 - 1/8 of a teaspoon does my 5ft display tank and for the smaller tanks I just measure what the combined total litres of the tanks are and pre mix and divide between each tank eg. 5 tanks x 100L = 500L and each tank gets 1/5 of the mix.
+y2kiwijn Thanks for the input!
You're most welcome.
Just trying to keep the hobby simple while reducing costs where possible.
Throwback: I just watched your video How to set up a saltwater aquarium from 4 years ago! How much you have improved since then amazes me haha I was just thinking IF you ever decide to go with marine tank setup for your drop off tank, you should do another how to set up a saltwater aquarium 'properly' video
So useful for Aquarium/Fish fans. Thanks.
Hi Joey,
I know this is an older video but I only just discovered this product. It might be 8 times cheaper in the US, but it’s about 100 times cheaper than what I have been using!!!! Thanks again for your help
But a solution of sodium thiosulfate deteriorates overtime, so its best to keep it in crystal form.
if kept it in crystal form, how can you measure the amount of it in when you perform water change?
Just one word "WOW!" Man I've been wasting money. I hunt like crazy for sales on my Prime I use, which I've sworn by for years, now one purchase and I think my hunt is finished for years! Still gonna research it some before purchase, but thanks for the awesome tip Joey! :-)
If i am not wrong 1ml=20drops...
You said 1 drop per gallon
And 1 ml to 10 gallon
So it must be 2 drops per gallon right????
QUESTION! I've had the same jug of this for quite some time now and it smells like eggs now. should I be worried?
Thanks this will help cut cost building a 30-40 tank fishroom currently using prime
wow thanks, was spending ridiculous amount on tetra aqua safe
no problem!
Just got a kilo of the stuff. If a dump it into a 5 litre container can it expire over the years?
@@magzire it has aroud 6 months of shelf life
Thanks Joey! I change a lot of water on my discus tank and have already gone through a few bottles of Prime. I was just about to order more and ordered this instead. It should really help since I hope to have more/larger aquariums in the future.
I really enjoy watching your videos, and love he little tips and tricks I've been in the hobby for ever and still learn from your snippets, thank you
Glad to hear it Michael!
what if i use crystals directly into aquarium
what is the dosage
Thanks again Joey. Your videos are always a worth while time investment for both seeing awesome tanks and as always top notch hobby info.
Excellent! One question this leaves me with is, my municipality also adds fluoride to our water, is the fluoride also a concern for the fish? Or will they just shrug it off? I keep giant gold fish so they're not too fragile, but still, it's taken me years to get them up to the size they are.
Flouride won't hurt fish in the amounts that any municipality adds to a towns water system.
You're good! Your fish will have good teeth :)
100% legit... I found this video because I saw the ingredient list on my water conditioner and this was it. Pretty cool...
very useful. thank you
arrowana tank is looking great!
What about making your water soft?
Very helpful info you shared thanks alot been hunting for the ingredients used in anti chlorine base being water completely free
great video! just have a question would it matter if is powder or looks like small pebbles?
Hi Joey I've been watching your videos recently and love them, I'm anewbie when it comes to fish, I've had many in the past bit not for about ten years, I. Starting up a marine tank only about 50-70l as I just want a few corals android clown fish and maybe a few cleaner shrimp, my question mainly is wilk this stuff only remove chlorine or will it cleanser from all impurities? I will need to use ro water anyway wondering if I can use water conditioner instead of researching and setting up an ro system in my small place.
Again I'm a newbie so probs asking some dumb questions but I'd rather ask them kill any fish or corals.
I am using it Sins beginning of my acquarium hobby,(7-8years)
This is really great Joey.. I'll definitely get it
Great tip joey...def a money saver!!!
Love the body shape of that aro! Classic bullet head!
Next question though.. I’ve heard that liquid water conditioners have preservatives in them. If so, do you have to worry about the shelf life of your “cheap” conditioner?
very interesting , Do you know if it has any other benefits similar to prime or stress coat?
or is there any thing else you can add to improve its ability ? thank you so much
Its more expensive to buy in Australia but I found 1kg for $22 delivered. Thanks for the tip!
urbanrat84 1kg you use it up for millions gallon of water. You can not use it up in your whole life
Hi there, I want to setup my new fish tank. I've have very little experience with it. So how does all the things work? The water, water cycle?, new tank how do you add the conditioner in and when to and when do you put the fishes in when you put in the conditioner?
Hi,
What do you think is an acceptable size tank for one pacu. I have heard many different answers so I'm pretty confused.
Thanks!
Hi bro can you please tel me how your maintaining water parameters for arowana .... your arowana are so beautiful and so colourful I’m trying so much to get such colour and I’m failing every time
One suggestion please.. How safe would it be to treat cloudy water with common alum, before adding it to the tank?. There are some vids in the RUclips regarding this process but it certainly did not look convincing to me that's why asking.
Looking to know this especially for discus tank.
I would rig up a DE filter before I’d go trying binding agents.
Can I have the link on the amazon..
Hey Joey. Can this method be used in tanks that have fish; various loaches most specifically, that are affected by salt (sodium)? Thnx.
Just found your video!
Any pointers on how I should go about treating a 1200 gallon pond when adding water. Our tap water is HIGHLY CHLORINATED!
We have reverse osmosis for drinking and cooking, as well as a berkey style filter in our living room.
I just made this. The minimum amount I could find to purchase was 1kg, so I'll be using it for quite a while :) Thank you for the tip!
could you please do a video on how your air stone puts out so many bubbles its cool
A friend of the family gave my boys a 28 gallon tank. I live in Toronto and I know that it has alot of bad stuff from the water plant. So I tried looking for this stuff that you used on Amazon but for some reason they don't show it there. Where else can I get the powder. Is this stuff they best and cheapest way to treat it.? Thank you.
Great video Joey, That is what I use too for my fish tank during water change. Saves me so much money!! Im a personal witness on this dechlorinator guys, it works and its cheap to buy.
just ordered from kens lol thanks man big money saver
One of your best tips by far :) Good work dude.
This is a great tip. Thanks, gotta look into this more.
For a discus keeper like yourself, doing lots of water changes. This is a must!
Amazing......thank you Joey.....legend
We know some water conditioners that are used during water changes removes chlorine and chloramine and also are used to detoxify ammonia up to a certain point if your tank has a slight spike in ammonia. Can sodium thiosulfate also do that or it's just used to remove chlorine and chloramine. TIA
Great tip I've been using this for years
on the bottle of the sodium thiosulfate it says 500grams. obviously the amount you put on the weighing scale is not 500grams...
Hi, I am storing conditioned water for more than 2 weeks. in a a water bottle for my 1.5 gallon tank is it safe still?.
Thanks for the tip.
Is there a shelf life once mixed with water?
Nobody knows
What do you think is an acceptable siz e tank for a single pacu fish?
tnx
LMAO I use this stuff at work everyday! Maybe they'll let me take some of the "expired" stuff home.
spare some pls
@ :22 the red jewelled scales on the silver dollar
Hi... one question.. the measurement in us gallon or empirical gallon??
Hi Mate, so this is safe for discus / zebra plecos/ more fragile fish? you would treat the water in a bucket rather than introducing chlorinated water and then treating it right? or doesnt it matter. Also would you recommend this over passing the new water through carbon as you mentioned in your drip feed videos? thanks.
hey btw thanks for your info ....ive made my bottle filter ...it looks great
Did you mind sharing the places that you bought the Sodium to be cheaper here in Canada?
Thanks men.
Will this be effective when I disinfect new plants from peroxide dip?
What would be safe to use to lower the ph level when first setting up the aquarium for the first time?
Joey i use this kind of water conditioner but could i use pure aloe for stress coat
Very good vid mate.
Thanks very useful
hello! Do you still do water changes like that?
A lot cheaper than prime,cheers mate 👍
What kind of arowana do you have
Did you use tap water for mixture?
pls show chlorine ppm before treatment & after treatment
how would I apply this to a tank on a drip system? I have very little chlorine but if I can connect it to a dosing pump would work out great.🤔
Awesome thank you
You said this will effectively neutralize chlorine but what about chloramine? Chloramine is harder to get rid of than chlorine.
it will also neutralize chloramine
@Michael Orme I guess that makes it perfect for newly filled tanks with new medium. Rather than using straight ammonia during initial cycle
@@ArmandoDiazMiami does store bought dechlorinator cause ammonia as well?
I learn something new every day ..about the hobby and love it thanks Joey aka Uaru boss lol
Can you make a DIY equivalent to seachem's neutral regulator?
Ok so how much did you put in the bottle ?
I know this is a stupid question.but can I still use this as well as a water conditioner at the same time or do I just use one or the other.
Joey when say "almost impossible to overdose" does that mean O2 depletion is less likely with this diy solution compared to safe?
Where cani buy this in canada
1000 mg of Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) will also neutralize chloramine in 30-50 gallons of water.
Lemon juice?
Hey Joey! I'd like to know where do you purchase sodium thiosulfate in Canada ? Thank you 😊
is it okay to use Sodium Thiosulfate with Purified water?
I just age the water. 24/48 hours. Add some warm water to speed the process up. Chloramines are more stable, take more time to break down but are rarely used, usually in bigger cities.
I used to work in industrial water treatment where hypochlorite is the most common method to keep biology in check for open systems. There were places in summer where we would dose a cubic meter into the system in a few days. The molecule breaks apart into water and chlorine that's what creates the disinfecting ability. Chlorine then just evaporates from the water. Heat and sunlight speeds this process up.
Thank you Joey!! Fish on!
Hi! what happen if you accidentaly overused the Sodium Thiosulfate? is there any affect on life of fish?
They die
Very cool Joey, thanks for the tip!
can you please tell me " DIY how to change hard water to aquarium safe water" . Thank You.
I work in a pharmaceutical lab and we use sodium thiosulfate to remove chlorine from the incoming city water when we perform bioburden tests. I've always wondered if it would work in my aquariums.
Sure will!
I know you personally don't use dechlorinator but it would be cool if you covered this again.
I have 4oz of Sodium thiosulfate and I don't want to use it all, how much of the crystals should I use to make one cup?
love the vid how long will this keep
what water we can use for mix? distilled water?
After researching just wanted to add that this only works on chlorine and not chloramine, which is chlorine with ammonia added. Which more municipalities are switching too. Still great tip, just check with your water company to see what they use.
+toycar foushboy actually, it works for both. Chloramine is just chlorine and ammonia. The mix will still neutralize the chlorine part and leave behind a small amount of ammonia in amounts you won't need to worry about or be able to detect. Keep researching.
So my good bacteria would control, ie. Eat.
