How did Liberia Get its Name?

  • Aside from the fact that it has one of the most unique histories in Africa, the fact that it's the only African nation to have been colonized by African Americans, the fact that it's one of only two African countries that were not colonized during Europe’s scramble for colonies, the fact that it is Africa’s oldest republic, the fact that the first female president on the continent calls it home and that its current president is the only African to have been named World Player of the Year, little else is known about the west African nation of Liberia. So how did Liberia get its Name?

Thank you for this history lesson in 8 mins! What was disturbing/disappointing, is the fact that they treated the natives in the same manner in which they were treated in the US. Lost opportunity to join forces and truly live as an equitable nation.

It somewhat a common occurrence that often times victims of certain crimes go on and commit those crimes onto others (hence why you had a small percentage of black en-slavers in the USA). Liberia was the second attempt to settle former enslaved people of the USA outside the country. The other place was an island off the coast of Haiti. The problem with the whole Liberia project is that they selected a land that was already inhabited. I wonder how would history been different if the settlement was done on empty land whether in Africa on in the United States.

What is an African American? Is it just a government identification for a lot of different African descendant people who were born in America who must of them can't trace their slave history and don't know their real ethnicity? In the 21 Century they don't all have the same culture, traditions or religion anymore. I suspect the classification doesn't have the same meaning it had in the 19th and 20th Century. This would be a good topic of discussion. Also, mentioning the various names the government used to classify African descendant people born in America would be another point. First they were called Colored, then Negro, then Afro American, then black American and now the new term African American starting in 1989. So, what does this really mean in the 21 Century for African descendant people born in America? Many African Americans no longer have the culture, traditions or religion of the first immigrants of Liberia, Monrovia.

According to the facts spoken by Dr Arikana the former AU ambassador to the US, when Kwame Nkrumah called for the unity of the continent in 1963 in order for us to be totally liberated economically, it was the Liberian-led groups who opposed him and voted against the Casablanca group who were for total unity and freedom.
There's something about Liberia that's not truly African till today. Why are they still flying a colonial and oppressive flag till today?
Two hundred years in Africa and has not fully Africanized yet?
    We need answers.

Interesting video but I think your analysis is buying into a colonial narrative and should go deeper.
Liberia was first settled in 1821 on empty land purchased by the ACS. It was not established by force like the colonial powers. The ACS governors saw Liberia as a commercial enterprise and exploited the settlers/Americo Liberians who were not all ex-slaves or even American. Some were born free and lots were captured from along the West Coast of Africa, especially modern day Nigeria, and shipped to Liberia after slave ships were seized crossing the Atlantic after the abolition of the slave trade in 1808.
The settlers fought to abolish the slave trade which was still very active in West Africa at the time and succeeded in liberating the entire territory, incorporating the people they freed people into the settlement. Although while under white ACS rule you had to be Christian to be a part of the settlement, after the settlers declared independence from the ACS, the constitution (which was not based off of the US') included freedom of religion. The only requirement then and to this day, to qualify as a Liberian citizen is to be of African descent.
Liberia was the hub of Panafricanism in the movement's infancy, Marcus Garvey's Back to Africa Movement was originally meant to be in Liberia in the 1920s, until US and European intervention.
The labour scandals only occurred after the US took control over Liberia's military and began economically dominating the country. Liberians created the largest plantation made by hand, via forced labour, for the US private company Firestone Rubber in 1926 - this company still runs today. The Liberian government was about to be annexed by Britain and France at this point in time. Giving up economic and military sovereignty to American advisors and foreign investment was the lesser evil.
There were members of the Liberian legislature that were profiting off of the recruitment of forced labour in the 1920s - Spain was forcing people to work in slave like conditions in their island of Fernando Po and were buying labour from Liberian officials. These officials weren't 'all Americans enslaving natives' - history is more nuanced than that. Liberia has 16 different 'native' ethnicities other than 'Americo-Libeiran', all with autonomous people. As soon as the scandal was exposed, the Liberian legislature impeached the members involved in Forced Labour but the US continued to exploit the country via Firestone. It was not considered illegal that Spain was using the supplied forced labour either.
During the cold war the US supplied military and economic aid to the Liberian dictator William Tubman as well as securing him the presidency. Tubman destroyed unions and crushed protests so that American and his own private interests could flourish.
After Tubman died in 1971, he was followed by Tolbert who was a PanAfricanist who moved to industrialise and nationalise Liberia's resources and to rewrite the previous bad concession agreements. In 1979 the US supported a coup to overthrow him which ultimately led to destabilisation and a 14 year civil war in 1989. Violence ended in 2004 and US and European powers profited from blood diamonds, timber and gold during the conflict.
Liberia's history is purposefully misrepresented by the West to suppress African unity and liberation - Liberia represented freedom for Africans from the Americas to the continent for many years. Misinformation was spread during 19th and 20th centuries regarding Liberia to justify colonisation of the continent and to sabotage Pan-Africanist movements - 'Look at the Africans they treat each other badly too'. Just because Liberia was never colonized by whites did not mean it had its sovereignty respected - even today our leaders allow foreign companies to exploit on the continent.
Liberia's history is complicated. Like your latest video on Ghana and Nkrumah, we hosted many great Africans as a country, but also like Ghana, a few greedy people are used as puppets by the Europeans and Americans to exploit us.

    • @oxfordsbro
      @oxfordsbro Год назад +1

@@ronaldmadziro5679 I'm not sure where you've got that information from. I would recommend learning from real Liberian historians, intellectuals and from primary sources. The settlers from America treated locals nowhere near as badly as the Europeans. There is no evidence of that. There was lots of intermarrying, today, you can barely see a difference between those who returned from America and those who are 'natives'. You have a very 1 dimensional view handed down from the colonizers and should do better to educate yourself. The Liberian History Channel on Focus on Liberia has a great series discussing real Liberian history if you would like to know more. Can't you see that your narrative is meant to disunite Africans? Peace and love.
