In the summer time I don't even strap my G19 on me. When it's summer the temp is already 70 to 79 around 7 AM and 8 AM roll around it's already 81 to 85 you can feel the weight start to take a toll on you. Guess what? I live in the suburbs. In Texas I run full sized and compact also the 365 macro. Last year we had 100 days of over 100. It was hot you do need to be careful of hot spots still carrier full sized most about 30% of the time then compact. I am active between 12K and 17k steps per day. Heat doesn’t bother me that much. But if you need to carry a 365 or 365 xl. Then that’s what ya gotta do.

Something to remember is when Browning designed the 1911, the TDP was based upon the much less precise machining capabilities of the day. Were parts hand fit? Yes, but military 1911's had much looser tolerances compared to the precisely machined "1911's" of today. The loose fit was part of the design and was in large part the reason for it's reliability during military trials in which the 1911 went 5000 rounds without a stoppage. Tight tolerance does not equal reliability, but precision lockup and more sensitivity to fouling of any kind. Everything is a trade-off.

@realfnneato3111 of course. Because every comment on the internet that challenges an individual's perception of reality must be accompanied by a bibliography of cited peer reviewed documentation. The proof you seek is in the historical archives regarding the military pistol trials that began in 1907 and ended in 1910 with the formal adoption of Browning's submissions of pistol and cartridge taking place in 1911. You can see the competitor submissions and their performances as well.

Regarding the comments about all the issues… you’re not wrong. Specifically when people ask me about 1911s versus whatever striker variant, I tell them to go for the striker. Carrying a 1911/2011/DS1911 as a carry gun is akin to choosing to run a classic car everyday as opposed to a Camry or Accord. You CAN do it, but it requires a level of work and maintenance most people aren’t willing to do. Wilson Combat for instance tells you to clean their guns after 500 rounds and once a month if you’re carrying (even if you don’t fire the gun), with a complete teardown once a year. None of my Glocks require this level of tediousness. I still prefer to carry my Wilson more than anything else.

I’ve watched 1911 syndicate video on 2011s and his break down on difference in pricing and quality. These people know little to nothing about machining, manufacturing, and give very bad information on what is considered quality. For example he’s saying something like machined parts are stronger than forged parts (some nonsense similar to this). From my experience that’s not the case; forged metals have stronger grain formations than milled… similar to how 3d printed plastics are not as strong as injection molded. I'm a full time machinist and can tell you that the general rule is Forged>Billet>Cast this is predicated upon the idea that the forging and post processing is done correctly. The grain of a forged part is in line with the forging giving the extra strength in line. Billet has a straight grain and is strong across this grain. Cast has no macro grain structure.

I haven't had any issues with my Staccato P yet. I've been shooting it in USPSA and training quite a bit since I picked it up in March '23. It did go over 3k rounds at one point with no cleaning, and it was quite disgusting inside. I also dropped it in the sandy dirt, slide locked back, no mag inserted, in my orchard in an attempt to force a malfunction. The sand and debris were caked on the barrel and both sides of the gun. Inserted the mag and fired 15 or so rounds without a hiccup. I found it appalling that it made it through that with no issues, but it kept chugging along a week later at the next pistol match. I finally cleaned it in January this year 😂
I don't think the pistol is infallible. I do find that dirt, sand, and small rocks can wreck the magazines in a hurry. Thankfully, they're very easy to take apart and clean.

100% agree about the precision of guns vs shooters. I’ve found in bench vices that every 9mm gun pretty much shoots between 8-10 moa at 100 yards(revolvers actually do the best). I think the difference is recoil control on follow up shots. Factors that matter the most seem to be grip/compensation/weight. For conceal carry personal defense that generally means finding the guns that YOU grip the best. Compensated guns are concussive without ear and eye pro, and obviously carry a heavy weight isnt great for CCW.

Excellent video! Now do that Platypus. I guarantee that when comparing it to other 2011’s, you’ll be impressed by the reliability. Everybody thinks the big advantage is the customization, and cheap mags, but the Glock mags made it a SIGNIFICANTLY more reliable platform, and this is speaking from someone with 1911’s, that uses a Glock 19 for my work truck.

Yes, because the 2011 mags are the root of all evil. Get rid of those and it gets significantly better. If it were up to me, I would remove the grip safety as well, in order to remove another classic failure point. At that point you're left only with the weird and fragile 1911 sear spring, but that's the price you pay for the nice trigger, so you have to live with it.

Excited for this review. This could be a Part 2 of the Roland Special vid, I remember you mentioning that the new hotness for more capability in a carry gun was the 2011. Anyway, question: do you think there will ever be a time between concealed carrying a handgun and taking a rifle around that looks like people open carrying handguns? Curious on your thoughts.

Open carry is a comfort thing unless it's a REALLY big gun. I'd personally default to concealed carry even when things are pretty bad

If it's an election year, it's a happening year, and the other three are up in the air. That being said, we aren't dropping into Tom Clancy's The Division when we wake up every day. Most people aren't really bloodthirsty savages out for your meat. The lights are on, and you've still gotta get up for work in the morning. If there's riots in your town, consider a pistol form-factor PDW a la BF and Hop's earlier videos on the Flux, and carry it with some extended mags and a trauma kit in a get home bag. Otherwise, it's not necessarily the move; any additional bulk usually just pegs you as the guy who gets clocked instantly by LEOs and other CCers. Just stick with your CC and backup mag, and maybe a very small trauma kit if you're looking to patch holes, and it should take care of most day-to-day what-ifs.

I recently got into a Prodigy...it's been an interesting journey. Today was the first painful day, I was working with a coworker to fit some Atlas safeties, and ended up taking off slightly more than we intended...he was kind enough to cover the cost for a replacement as he felt it was his mistake. I, will be picking him up a gift at some point to help make up for putting him in the position in the first place (might not even install the replacement).
PS. For those wondering, my coworker has taken 1911 armorer courses, he has fitted safeties for Nighthawks, Wilsons, etc...this was the first time he has ever slipped up.

I compete with a 2011, and a custom, handmade by a gunsmith one. I need to agree on the flaws of the platform. Mags are a single stack .45 thing that had to be turned into a double stack 9mm thing, not the recipe for success, less so on the Bul mags but still. This guns are performance machines that’ll really let you know I far you can go with a pistol, or how much you suck and leave you no excuses, but need to be kept clean, even more than other competition guns. I shoot mine an average of 200 rounds at a time, up to 400 for big matches, so the cleaning is tolerable, but it definitely something you need to work into your routine if you choose to carry something like this. Also, with these guns they should include a magazine brush, it goes such a long way in keeping dirt out of the gun (ultra race gun shooters clean their mags every time they touch the ground…).
Loved the video and the conclusions though, thanks for your work!

While technically striker fired handguns are less susceptible to getting dirty (due to their enclosed firing pin) when the barrel locking lugs get dirty that has nothing to do with Hammer fired guns. The SIG 220 series locking style is what allows for simpler and cleaner locking (at a minute cost to locking consistency for precision purposes)

I love my 92, but I don't know if it'd fit him. He lives in a desert with fine sand, which loves to get into the locking channels. Open top slide makes for pleasant shooting and easy manipulation, but also debris ingress. You COULD say "just get the M9A4 and clean it more" but that seems more like forcing the issue with unnecessary amounts of labor and material until the proposed solution works only partly as well as the original solution. I think he honestly is better served in his environment with his Glonk-brand Glonk.

I’m a veteran and a cop. I’m also a competitive shooter. I have 1 1911. And Guntube had me convinced I need a 2011. I have found that even my best fast completion gun is just not as reliable as my Duty guns.
So I bought a TISAS 2011 shot the piss out of it and it reliable ( not G17 reliable) but I spent $650 as opposed to 2k. It runs great looks traditional like a 1911 has a good trigger and zero branding and for what I paid for it I can upgrade it and still be under prodigy prices.

Appreciate your perspective on the gun, everyone has their own thoughts for sure! On the topic of those who feel $500 guns shoot as good as a Stacatto, Sig Sauer P226 X5 Legion or a Bul Armory, give me a break with that absolute nonsense, tired of hearing that......!!!!!!! When you pay that kind of money for a gun you are paying for: better slide action, less recoil, less barrel flip, better return to target and a quality trigger that will make one shoot better - end of discussion!! I understand that everyone's finances are different and these guns may not be affordable but there is a reason WHY they are more expensive. These guns shoot better than $500 guns and are vastly more enjoyable to shoot, so stop the silly argument that they are not worth it or don't perform better - you loose your credibility when anyone says that nonsense.......!!!!!!

The problem I see with this is that the cuts in the top of the slide allow crap right into the locking lug area. You also have the classic 1911 internal extractor setup, which is a detriment. I don't know why none of these companies go with a copy of the S&W E-Series external extractor for these 2011s. Lastly, I absolutely hate the recoil spring and rod setup on these. If I was obsessed with single action pistols or whatever I'd probably go for one of the new Beretta 92 SAO models.

  • @ryewaldman2214

I didn't grow up on pistols, so the notion of a striker fired gun always seemed wrong. rifles and shotguns have manual safeties and crisp triggers, and that has never been a problem before, so something like a 2011 seems like a very natural and easy gateway into sidearms. When i was looking for a carry gun, Staccato and BUL were really the only two making carry-style double stacks.
I'm happy to pay for a well built piece like a staccato C2 that i have neither the skill nor tooling to build myself. I am not willing to pay for a plastic fantastic when i have this 3d printer sitting here and psa selling complete slides at bargain prices.
In my experience with my normal maintenance routine, these 2011 style carry guns are reliable unless you are drop-leg carrying in an freezing rain/ice storm, where the exposed hammer is a weak point. in a concealed carry case, i can't envision a scenario where the gun wouldn't function long enough to burn up all the ammo you could possibly carry on person.
