I must go to school! Then I got new VHS-player, so i can watch too, Sadly, here in Finland was long delay after start - or ads- , so ending was often missed "out of tape" or first minutes missed.
Says alot that's it's been eleven years since this was posted and almost forty since the show started and yet this still gets so many new views and appreciation after all this time. The true test of success is time and this show and character along with Magnum, PI, The Rockford Files and quite a few more are truly timeless classics that these damn reboots they keep doing won't ever be able to do.

I always remembered Macgyver as being a little bit far fetched. But, this was a really practical solution; working on the car engine while it's flying down a hill with no brakes.
i used to fix my car like that had a fluid leak and the clutch wasn't working out in the jungle so i fixed the leak and put some of brake fluid into the clutch reservoir as its the same and i was able to get home.
It occurs to me, that MacGuyver is basically acting like a living R2 unit in this scene, diverting power from one "system" to another after the "ship" is hit by weapons fire. (Yes, I'm a geek.)
what they didn't show you is the part where once he popped off the power steering pump line (with no tools mind you) the guy driving wouldnt be able to steer quick enough to make those corners, and even if the brakes did start to work (without bleeding the air out of em) mac would have flown off of the front of the car the second the driver used them. but still macgyver is a great show
Yeah it's totally unrealistic. He didn't fix the actual blown brake line, and they would need to pump the air out of the lines by opening the bleed screws at each wheel. haha.

Handbrake wouldn't have been affected by the broken brake line, on older cars like this the handbrake is the mechanically connected to the rear end by a cable. The opposite would have happened, yank the handbrake, the brakes on red end would completely lock up
Volvos have a duel hydraulic breaking system including a second reservoir. If one line is compromised the other system would still be there. Further: the lines out of the master cylinder up to the fender wells are all metal and not rubber. Whatever brake line that was hit by the bullet was a modification made for this show. So call I this BS. Also hoods don't fly off because the internal latch is released. There is a primary latch which has to be released at the front of the car. Never mind that the hood is attached with some formidable bolts where it is the hinged to the car.

not true, you can use power steering fluid for brakes, even transmission fluid. but don't use either for transmission fluid, that would be bad for transmission

You guys should go look at your cars. The lines running from the hard lines in the fender well to the brake caliper or brake cylinder (drum brakes) are almost always rubber. Granted, they are reinforced rubber...they are still mostly rubber.
Under the hood they typically aren't though, usually flare ended stainless. Unless that car was a shit patch together job macguyver would have been screwed. Also opening a hood at speed will slow you down quite a bit. Ask me how I know.

Refilling the brake master cylinder with power steering fluid evidently fixed the gaping, brake line damage.

He used the Ferguson technique to fix it. Works good as a short term solution.

Emergency breaks work on a cable so unless their was issues with the cable it would have worked

Just so everyone knows, p/s fluid in a brake system will cause the rubber seals to swell up over a short period of time.
